Senior Citizen Issues - Assisting Your Parents
statsman replied to ROFL BOX's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
I will share a more positive senior story. My dad enlisted in the army at 16, in 1952, going full active duty after graduating HS. At the time, the army said that if you enlisted, and retired, you would have healthcare for life at no cost. Not for spouses, just the soldiers. Of course, years later, Uncle Sam tried to claw that back. A MOH winner sued, and won: https://www.military.com/militaryadvantage/2012/05/is-there-a-promise-of-free-health-care-for-life?amp Retirees who enlisted before 1958 get free healthcare for life. It doesn’t have to be from VA system. When a doctor tells him he should go to the ER, Dad says, “Call an ambulance”. Everything is paid for. In an argument with him, my sister threatened to ignore his medical DNR preference and keep him plugged into machines forever, keeping those retirement checks coming while he is comatose (she was joking, … I think). He has a unique situation and we are grateful for it. -
Bill Belichick, girlfriend ended UNC’s ‘Hard Knocks’ dalliance as fast as it began. Why?

I'm enjoying it mostly because of the actors but yeah, the similarities to the Godfather are kinda funny. You have a Fredo, an adopted son, Helen Mirren as a later period Connie. The grandson is Vincent. When does Moe Greene or Frankie Pantangeli's brother show up?

NFL fans need something to do during the offseason.

Litmus test for when you know everything is going so great, it can run itself, with too many failsafe backup checks to fail. So of course, let’s elect the guy running on unraveling it all, or worse, not care at all.

The boy is currently entangled with a German/Georgian girl. On the one hand, he says they are too different, and it just won't work out, so they aren't going to see each other anymore. On the other hand, she is a stunning Eastern European brunette, and he cannot stay away, and keeps coming back to her. I get it dude, I get it. That region has a lot to offer.

Does it still have a Pac Man machine?

Accurate. As the river of words flows rapidly across the smooth brain, occasionally one or two words of flotsam get caught in the lone wrinkle and stick there. BIDEN'S FAULT is just one of those phrases. Perhaps later, that one may get dislodged and replaced with something slightly longer such as LOCK HER UP.

No shit he was 18. It was inevitable that he'd gain weight as he got older. The issue is he's not Lebron with his offseason workouts.

No, usually I buy French green beans, which definitely are string beans. I cook them like my mom did, which probably softens them up enough so I don't notice my mistake. They are delicious in any event.

Looked like great games last night but I couldn't stay up for the 2nd OT of Carolina/NJ or either of the West Coast games after the late night at the AAC Monday. Had to catch up on sleep! -
Hope it's not a fluke and the bats wake up.

True, but they're still handy on a motorcycle. Not for backing up, but for keeping an eye on the asshole in the cage coming up behind you at intersections while staring at their phone. I've managed to dodge an idiot teenager and an idiot soccer mom in a vehicle too big for her husband to handle, thanks to the rear camera I installed. They're also handy for providing evidence that the accident was, indeed, caused by the person on four wheels who wasn't paying attention and not the guy on two wheels who has to pay attention very closely if he doesn't want to die. They also provide blind spot detection, although I don't find that as useful as my neck still works. A few more years on me and that might become a feature I enjoy more. One huge negative of the EV market is how dangerous they are for motorcyclists and bicyclists. They encourage people to not to pay attention when driving (at least the idiots who believe their car is "self driving", which seems to be a ton of them). Clueless drivers is already a major problem thanks to smart phones, but EVs have added to the problem considerably. They weigh a metric shit-ton, so collisions are much worse compared to ICE vehicles of a similar class. The number one brand killer of motorcyclists is, you guessed it, Tesla. I'm not arguing against EVs, but this is a major negative that doesn't get discussed much as most people don't give two shits about motorcyclists (or bicyclists for that matter). I didn't see the weight numbers for the Slate, but for something that looks like a Lego toy it will weigh as much as a full size Chevy Silverado, if not more, but with better acceleration, handling, etc., that lead clueless drivers to drive them recklessly. All you have to do is watch the average Tesla driver try to navigate a moderately windy road (or even a straight one a lot of the time), to know they have very little control over their vehicle.
