Surly Boxing Thread
I have thoughts. 1) Jake Paul isn’t good. But (and I know this isn’t a popular take) he’s not terrible. He’s strong, thick, has enough natural athleticism, and he’s worked hard enough to acquire basic professional boxing skills on the level of a regional journeyman 40 years ago. He has below average feet and above average speed and power. If he really brings it in the ring he’s the kind of guy who gave Buster Douglas trouble. He’s good enough to hang with a better boxer who doesn’t come in fully committed. 2) Mike Tyson was spectacular and wonderful to watch, but his success came from a unique combination. First, he was physically unusual- a powerlifting build and supernatural core strength and balance combined with middleweight speed and movement. Secondly, at his brief peak he essentially treating boxing as a monastic vocation to the exclusion of everything. Third, he only had elite ring skills but was fighting in a style that was archaic and strange even in the mid-80’s. Other professionals couldn’t really spar anyone like him because nobody else did or trained to do what he did. Buster Douglas beat him by retreating to first principles for a bigger boxer: distance enforced by a long, hard jab, forcing the smaller man to burn energy to work around it and keep their guard up. At that point, Tyson had left the monastery and as we all know had lots of distractions. His stamina was never exceptional, and it failed him, and he got knocked out. And after that night the old Tyson never came back. He didn’t even really box in the same style anymore. He became much more conventional. The Tyson who went on to beat Tillman and Alex Stewart and maybe Razor Ruddock (twice) was a top level pro, and maybe he could have found himself for the originally scheduled Holyfield fight, but we all know what happened next and after that, the dragon was dead after that, even if the boxer who remained was still a dangerous draw. 3) This isn’t just a fight between a 27 year old and a 58 year old. And it’s also not a fight between a dancing bear and a crafty old champion. It’s a fight between a dangerous puncher coming into his physical prime and a guy who hasn’t really been the MIKE TYSON of our imagination since he the Bruno fight in 1989. This ridiculous promotion is based on a certain suspension of disbelief. Not just that an old man can beat a young one (and maybe he can), but that there was a boxer named Mike Tyson who was a historically great champion, and that’s not the case. There was a boxing phenom named Mike Tyson who could have been like Rocky Marciano, but he had a spectacular rise and dramatic fall, and came back to eke out a living as a celebrity contender in a division far weaker than the one he dominated years earlier. Strength and is the last thing to go and assuming the fight is on the level (a huge if) I’ll give Mike Tyson a puncher’s chance for old times sake and I hope he wins. But none of the elements that made him what he was are with him anymore, and I just don’t see it. -

we have plenty of talent to handily win this game and i expect us to do so, 4-1 i expect trusty to start at left center and be a revelation i also expect normal concacrap shenanigans to be in remission - any jamaican player that has any hope of a european payday won't dare commit assault on a multi-million-pound/euro asset in front of a coach connected to the top echelons of european football across the continent -
