The last living starter of the 1947 and 1948 Texas Longhorn football teams is gone. Lew Holder (“Coach” to us, his grandkids) was a 3 year letterman at Texas and roomed with his DKE fraternity brother, Tom Landry, for whom he’d later serve as best man at his wedding. Here he is pictured left with Landry. Lew was named to the Press 1948 All-Southwest Football Team It’s kinda funny because three of those guys had grandsons that played on the 2001-2002 HP Scot Football Teams (Doak Walker, Lew Holder, and Lindy Berry). Coach was about as bad-assed as they came. There’s also the old story about him in the game against TCU in 1947. In the era before facemasks, Lew was charged to rush the punter against the Frogs. He blocked the living hell out of it…with his face, which caused him to lose multiple teeth. He ran to the sideline, spit out his four front teeth into a metal bucket, and returned to the field to play some more. Lew’s finest hour as a Longhorn occurred on January 1, 1948, in Tulane Stadium in New Orleans. With 7 minutes to play in the 4th quarter, Texas led favored Alabama, 13-7. Alabama had the ball at its own 10 yard line when Lew intercepted a pass and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown and a 20-7 lead for Texas. After the ensuing kick-off, Lew sacked the QB on 1st down and then on 3rd down stripped the ball from the quarterback’s hands and recovered on the Alabama 5 yard line. A few plays later Bobby Lane punched in a quarterback sneak sealing a 27-7 victory and Texas’ first and only Sugar Bowl title. If you’d like to view Lew’s heroics in this game, watch the period of time from the 32:00 minute mark to the 35:00 minute mark on the video at the bottom of this article: https://allstatesugarbowl.org/classic/1948-game-recap/ Coach then tried his luck at pro ball with the AAFC’s Los Angeles Dons: But, if I remember correctly, he hated living in California and this was obviously well before big money contracts allowed a pro football player to be set for life in just 6-10 years, so he headed back to Texas and left his athletics career in LA. My grandmother was married to my grandfather in that approximate time period, but my grandfather passed away at the age of 30 in 1962. As luck would have it, my widowed grandmother living with her 3 young children, would later meet and ultimately marry this fine man and would remain so, through thick and thin, until this past Thursday morning as he passed peacefully in his sleep. I know the normal protocol is to offer condolences for a “loss,” but the truth is that his peaceful passing was a relief to all of us, most of all to himself. He had recently battled multiple strokes over the past few years and had several severe falls that basically rendered him bedridden for the last couple years of his life. That was no way for one of life’s giants to live. You have to understand, from the age of 7 when I was first exposed to it until the age of 21 when I could finally take it (or he could no longer dish it out), I hated shaking his hand because he had a grip that would crush the neck of a grizzly bear. In fact I was just told this morning that it was recently discovered that he had a hairline fracture in either his back or hip that could very well have occurred in his playing days at UT, but no one would ever have known it in watching him. We will be holding a memorial service for him next weekend, but make no mistake, this will be no funeral. This will be the celebration of the life of one of the finest men I have ever known. We love him dearly, and we know he’s finally at peace. Hook 'Em Horns, Coach.8 points

Like imagine you are this lady. You've had a long and successful career of race bating and outing gay people and scaring old white people. You have a big time tv show. The people you associate with probably respect you or at least pretend to. You think you've made it, or at least made it as far as a shrill bigoted white lady can make it. You dog whistle Lebron James and sure, you get roasted by adults with an IQ over 80, but your loyal base eats it up harder than a hat full of leaves. Then one day you see a child from Florida speaking out against gun violence and you think "bingo, time to get my name out in the news again and boost those ratings. I can say whatever I want, because my loyal following of mouth breathers and cash-for-gold enthusiasts will love this." So you fire off a tweet and go to bed, ready to see the shitstorm you started in the morning and then talk about it all week. Except that doesn't happen. That little shit tweets at your advertisers. You probably laugh it off at first, but then one by one they start dropping you. Your producers are calling you, the network is pissed, and suddenly there are consequences for being the piece of shit you always have been. And then you have to come out crawling on your hands and knees and apologize to some fucking kid from Florida or else you will lose everything you have. Don't try and tell me that isn't fucking awesome.7 points

Not sure if this is the right board to post this on, but what the hell, I’ve been curious. My wife and I had our fourth kiddo in June of last year. Our son has Down Syndrome. So far, we’ve been fortunate to avoid many of the significant health issues that kids with DS encounter; heart, respiratory, etc. Our little guy is a complete badass, and the happiest little man I’ve been around. Anyone else part of the 3/21 club? Happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk6 points

Yep. Gun owners. Those lawful gun owners committing next to no crimes. That buy their gun through legal means. Have been THE ONLY ones compromising. Year after year. Bill after bill. We have thousands of pages on laws on the books today. Thousands. But lets layer on more. And by all means lets definitely not examine similarities between night clubs, theaters, schools, college campuses, and even military bases....all experiencing tragedy, all from different platforms (pistols, rifles, and even bolt guns)....and ignore the GLARING common denominator: all occurred in gun free zones, where the assailant knew the victims were unprotected and unable to defend themselves.5 points

One of my daughter's best friends has a little sister with Down Syndrome. Until our families became fairly close, I hadn't spent much time with DS kids. I can say with 100% honesty that "Bean" is one of the most joyful, lovable kids I have ever met. It is an absolute blast to hang out with her, chat, play, whatever. I have never asked, but I would imagine she is fairly "high functioning", as she is very social, quite adept at conversation, takes a lot of regular classes in middle school, etc. My life is better for knowing her.5 points

I know this thread got some traction on that Website that is not to be named, some of our brethren got some sound advice and help, so, I am reprising it here with my first post. To update, Mrs. Lid the Sequel and I are divorced, she is in another relationship, my daughter did not survive and I am and forever will be on a completely different life/soul path. I hope the thread brings peace to some on here: And so: Having read the "I'm an alcoholic" thread with great interest, and in order not to improperly $#@! on that very informative and substantive (especially for the Shag) thread, I thought I'd see if there is any interest in this topic. So, let me start.5 years ago, I married an alcoholic. I knew at the time that she was an alcoholic. A little over 2 years before our marriage (the second for both of us), she had entered Starlight Rehab for 30 days. In fact, I was on the verge of ending things when she announced she is going. I waited for 2 years to see if indeed, she had turned a corner and was keeping the demon at bay. On the surface, it appeared so. Maybe I should have been more observant. In the few months prior to our wedding, she lost a significant amount of weight (as in 140 lb to about 110lb). She said it was natural nervousness and excitement. We carried forward.Marriage went relatively smoothly for a few months but then, I began to sense that things appeared to be "off." Working late, excuses for seemingly innocuous events not happening. And, I began to question. Finally, she was unceremoniously let go by her long time employer and she came clean... she had been drinking for awhile. She pledged to go back to AA (which she had mostly gotten away from) and swore she would recover.I started to attend Al-Anon and eventually came to understand "The Three Cs."I didn't Cause it.I can't Control it.I can't Cure it.Of course, understanding the Three Cs and embracing them fully are two different topics. I read vociferously on the topic... books, internet articles. All in the hopes of understanding. And, all in the hope of finding .. peace? At the same time, I was struggling to save the life of my daughter. (we are now in year 4+ of her severe eating disorder... a number of doctors have stated that they are amazed she is alive still and that her case is the most severe they have ever seen).Apparently, the stress and pressure of the eating disorder, a marriage going sidewise, and her own lost soul, began to escalate the pressure. She just lost her 4th job in 5 years. Each time, the excuses, finger pointing and blame were placed elsewhere. Our relationship spiraled... again, the finger pointing and blame game, the long, babbling excuses, the lying to me, her family, her friends, her sponsor.... were all attempts to deflect from the heart of her issues. I began to see her much more clearly. The self-absorption... the ego, the self importance, the blame game, the finger pointing, the excuses.. all symptoms of that insidious demon, alcohol and the control it had on her life. And, eventually, you reach a point, perhaps my own "moment of clarity," wherein I was able to finally and with great conviction embrace the reality that "I can't Cure or Control it".. and never will be able to. And I can no longer live like this. Now, granted, I am not a saint as well. I will argue like the attorney I am, do not let a lot of people in, am not easy to give trust. My own flaws are legion. But, self-preservation and saving the life of my daughter predominate and must. We will separate in June and then eventually divorce. That is a certainty. And, I am fully at peace with that decision. As for marrying or entering into a relationship with an alcoholic? Would I do it again? Because of my past experience, no, not a chance. And yet, I see the strength, fortitude and wisdom from some posters on the other thread (you know who you are). And for those people, relationships would in all likelihood be sound and fulfilling. And yet, even still, if asked, if counseled, I would say, "do your research, read, attend Al-Anon, talk to other spouses who have been afflicted... use your instincts, pray on it... communicate." If you have a strong nature, a trusting soul, are well read on the topic, are independent and a belief that past events do not dictate future conduct, then embrace the relationship and glory in the bond that can be formed. If not... you have a very difficult decision to make.I hope others may get something from this posting... and urge you to post your own thoughts if you are in, or have been in this situation. For the TL/DR crowd... 1). Alcoholism is a demon, a destroyer of lives;2). Being the Spouse of an alcoholic can be the most challenging thing you ever do;3). Profit?4 points

God bless you and your family, man. I don't have nearly the first-hand experience of some of the (really good) assholes around here, who seem to be giving you some solid thoughts. My biggest dose of experience was working as a camp counselor at a summer camp for developmentally disabled kids one summer nearly 30 years ago. They were generally the happiest, kindest people I've been around my entire life. I had particular responsibility for a girl named Rita -- she was older, probably late 20s. She didn't have DS, but was developmentally disabled and behaved similarly to the DS kids around us. That week, it rained a lot, and the kids didn't all have rain gear, so we had them take their towels with them when we walked -- they could put it over them as a rain cover, dry off with it, etc. One afternoon, we walked to the campus theater to see some sort of play. I was so damned tired (had to be up at 6:00, and we were usually up till midnight). I sat down in my chair next to Rita, and as soon as the lights went down, I tried to curl up and sleep. I was shivering a bit (it had rained on me some on the walk over). As I lay there, shivering, trying to sleep, I felt a towel being draped over me. I cracked my eye open, and Rita was covering me with her towel to keep me warm. To this day, it's one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for me. When her dad came to pick her up at the end of the week, I told him a very abbreviated version of that event. He was a big old Texas boy, clearly working class. His eyes welled up, and he squeezed his daughter's hand, looked at her, and said "yeah, she's my special girl." Love your boy, man - like I know you will. He's a prize. And I'm wishing you strength on your walk, when there are hard days, because there will surely be some.4 points

My granddaughter has Down Syndrome. She changed my life. There is not a mean bone in her body. Her mind just doesn't go there. She has a wonderful sense of humor. She can tease, and will giggle at the silliest things. She has taught me more about life and love that I ever thought possible. Now, when I see someone in public with DS, I have a huge smile on my face. We go to the State Fair on Texas/OU day every year, as I always go to the game. Some of you may have seen her there in her UT cheerleader outfit.4 points

I'd keep a close eye on them. I'd keep it short to get some smoke flavor and finish quickly over higher heat. To be honest, I probably wouldn't bother with the smoker at all, unless you were doing a leg or some lamb breast. I think that its pretty damn hard to beat double cut rack of lamb, sous vide, and finished in cast iron.3 points

If Agnor really posted that, it's pretty funny. Well done. I've got no hard feeling for Hornfans. I was so delighted to find it when I lived in Los Angeles. I could hear Texas voices and Texas wit and all the great posters were all gathered in one place. It gave us SpiderAg for goodness sake.3 points

Last year I was standing in line at Edwards movie theater here in Houston to see "Get Out" and I looked up and noticed a familiar little pear-shaped man standing in front of me. Here is a picture of him talking to a guy and his toddler son, which almost makes him seem human and not a reptilian shapeshifter. I was going to get an ironic photo with him but about 5 seconds after I took this, he got mobbed by a group of about 25 asian high school boys / future Surly Horns. I talked to a couple of his aides for a few minutes. They seemed like ok dudes. About a month ago, I got this photo with his future replacement. You can see where my avatar comes from.3 points

So, my wife is from Fort Worth, and she has two younger brothers who are massive Ranger fans and still live up there. Let’s just say that owning your brothers-in-law in sports is very fun, especially when they have to pony up after your team wins a World Series. This is now a part of MMP outside of the center field gate. I saw it today for the first time.3 points

More, so many of them are working for a major, but didn’t really think out their next move or long term career path. Some of them are a little shocked they aren’t getting offered 9x80 desk postings at corporate after 12-24 months out of school on a large cap-ex project. I guess as an oilfield brat from W Texas, I always anticipated a nomad career with somewhere in TX being homebase. Just funny to me seeing people 5-10-15 years behind me. “I like deep water, but don’t think I could live in South Louisiana.” “I think I would like working plant turnarounds, but I could never live in Lake Charles or Baytown!” “I want to see the world while some else pays. Job postings in Midland, Kazakhstan, or West Africa!?! Gross.” There’s not really a wrong answer, choose what works for you, but snowflakes also need to get woke that they’re just a cog in the machine.2 points
