The last living starter of the 1947 and 1948 Texas Longhorn football teams is gone. Lew Holder (“Coach” to us, his grandkids) was a 3 year letterman at Texas and roomed with his DKE fraternity brother, Tom Landry, for whom he’d later serve as best man at his wedding. Here he is pictured left with Landry. Lew was named to the Press 1948 All-Southwest Football Team It’s kinda funny because three of those guys had grandsons that played on the 2001-2002 HP Scot Football Teams (Doak Walker, Lew Holder, and Lindy Berry). Coach was about as bad-assed as they came. There’s also the old story about him in the game against TCU in 1947. In the era before facemasks, Lew was charged to rush the punter against the Frogs. He blocked the living hell out of it…with his face, which caused him to lose multiple teeth. He ran to the sideline, spit out his four front teeth into a metal bucket, and returned to the field to play some more. Lew’s finest hour as a Longhorn occurred on January 1, 1948, in Tulane Stadium in New Orleans. With 7 minutes to play in the 4th quarter, Texas led favored Alabama, 13-7. Alabama had the ball at its own 10 yard line when Lew intercepted a pass and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown and a 20-7 lead for Texas. After the ensuing kick-off, Lew sacked the QB on 1st down and then on 3rd down stripped the ball from the quarterback’s hands and recovered on the Alabama 5 yard line. A few plays later Bobby Lane punched in a quarterback sneak sealing a 27-7 victory and Texas’ first and only Sugar Bowl title. If you’d like to view Lew’s heroics in this game, watch the period of time from the 32:00 minute mark to the 35:00 minute mark on the video at the bottom of this article: https://allstatesugarbowl.org/classic/1948-game-recap/ Coach then tried his luck at pro ball with the AAFC’s Los Angeles Dons: But, if I remember correctly, he hated living in California and this was obviously well before big money contracts allowed a pro football player to be set for life in just 6-10 years, so he headed back to Texas and left his athletics career in LA. My grandmother was married to my grandfather in that approximate time period, but my grandfather passed away at the age of 30 in 1962. As luck would have it, my widowed grandmother living with her 3 young children, would later meet and ultimately marry this fine man and would remain so, through thick and thin, until this past Thursday morning as he passed peacefully in his sleep. I know the normal protocol is to offer condolences for a “loss,” but the truth is that his peaceful passing was a relief to all of us, most of all to himself. He had recently battled multiple strokes over the past few years and had several severe falls that basically rendered him bedridden for the last couple years of his life. That was no way for one of life’s giants to live. You have to understand, from the age of 7 when I was first exposed to it until the age of 21 when I could finally take it (or he could no longer dish it out), I hated shaking his hand because he had a grip that would crush the neck of a grizzly bear. In fact I was just told this morning that it was recently discovered that he had a hairline fracture in either his back or hip that could very well have occurred in his playing days at UT, but no one would ever have known it in watching him. We will be holding a memorial service for him next weekend, but make no mistake, this will be no funeral. This will be the celebration of the life of one of the finest men I have ever known. We love him dearly, and we know he’s finally at peace. Hook 'Em Horns, Coach.5 points

In late October 2014 Hornfans announced they would be shutting down and that news was posted on this thread: http://www.shaggytexas.com/board/showthread.php/122498-Serious-question-Why-is-Hornfans-com-still-up-and-running/page8. A couple days later I created the Katy Agnor sock with the intention of doing some quality trolling but I’m lazy and never got around to it, then forgot about the account completely. When I heard the bad news about Shaggy last week I remembered the account and there was only one option for my first and only post with it.5 points

Haha, a friend of mine is the owner/publisher of a USC recruiting sight...he missed on only one recruit he had projected to USC, a kid who was undecided till the morning of signing day. It's posted on his site, Levi Jones told him Texas was where De'Gabriel was going to comitt to a month ago. Don't believe me? My twitter account is under the same name, and I promote his site. Scott is really connected to California recruits.4 points

It's about damn time we started mining California. That's a potential resource we've squandered for far too long.4 points

decided to do some reconnaissance while in rockport recently. mac's pit barbecue was the destination. if you're in the rockport area, i'd say it's a good option. yeah, i don't see it winning any non-local magazine awards, but i enjoyed my visit. brisket had good flavor and above average texture. the mac and pudding was surprising good for something that seems basic; i don't understand how some places fuck these up. sauce was basically tabasco and pepper--pass. ...and no visit to rockport would be complete without visiting the blue shed3 points

Floyd is a huge pickup, IMO. He's a vocal guy out west and he's likely to stick, neverminding the fact that he can ball like a motherfucker. I expect Texas to sign 25+ again and it won't surprise me if 8-ish are OOS. Is that what we had last year? I can't remember but it seems like it. I always wanted Texas to go OOS more and particularly California, so the press in that state is great news to me.3 points

Part of a quote from EJ: I was told two nights ago that Floyd wanted to commit but Texas told him to not rush things to make them happy. They wanted him to be sure of his decision. That approach actually won Floyd and his family over and he committed this morning. I really like that our staff takes this approach. Show the kids you respect them, make sure they're 100%, and reduce the chance of a decommit. It's the exact opposite of what Jimbo is doing this cycle. Edit: he's saying he's shutting it down and won't be taking any more visits3 points

Age is a tricky thing for Bourbon because bourbon doesn’t always continue to improve in the Barrel past a certain point (lower for wheaters, higher for high ryes) unless the aging conditions are just right. The nature of Orphan Barrel makes that a bit of a crapshoot when they are on the level about the program and cyncical marketing garbage when they aren’t. Some of the Orphan Barrel program is very good, some of them aren’t, and I don’t think any of it is really great. But they are all interesting. So the best way to approach them in my opinion is to get a pour of any given OB release at a well stocked bar before buying. This stuff is all subjective. Drink what you like and pay accordingly, because that’s good whiskey for you, but my personal opinion is that Rhetoric in particular falls into the second category. It’s not bad but it’s very expensive for what it is. Lost Prophet (if you can find it) on the other hand, is in the first. It’s very likely equivalent to the oldest George T Stagg on the planet. If you like GTS, you’ll probably like Lost Prophet.3 points

Like imagine you are this lady. You've had a long and successful career of race bating and outing gay people and scaring old white people. You have a big time tv show. The people you associate with probably respect you or at least pretend to. You think you've made it, or at least made it as far as a shrill bigoted white lady can make it. You dog whistle Lebron James and sure, you get roasted by adults with an IQ over 80, but your loyal base eats it up harder than a hat full of leaves. Then one day you see a child from Florida speaking out against gun violence and you think "bingo, time to get my name out in the news again and boost those ratings. I can say whatever I want, because my loyal following of mouth breathers and cash-for-gold enthusiasts will love this." So you fire off a tweet and go to bed, ready to see the shitstorm you started in the morning and then talk about it all week. Except that doesn't happen. That little shit tweets at your advertisers. You probably laugh it off at first, but then one by one they start dropping you. Your producers are calling you, the network is pissed, and suddenly there are consequences for being the piece of shit you always have been. And then you have to come out crawling on your hands and knees and apologize to some fucking kid from Florida or else you will lose everything you have. Don't try and tell me that isn't fucking awesome.3 points

Just a reminder of the power of Shaggy/Surly... When all this shit was going down, I pinged a buddy of mine who’s a partner at PWC. He replied that he knew nothing of the situation, but had heard the story from about ten different people over 24-48 hours. Said he was checking with HR for more info. Next day HR informs him they pulled his job offer. Never underestimate Shaggy/Surly. If my buddy heard it himself from 10 different people, PWC probably heard it from 1,000 people. Bernard2 points
