I mostly read the recruiting threads and add some inanity from time to time. Sometimes I add a perspective, but not often and rarely about specific player's ability. The recruiting thread at Shaggy was great because it remained light-hearted and often witty when recruiting news was scarce. The threads there were a refuge from the endless repetition of the football board and the entrenched mutual dislike many posters were addicted to. On the football board there was an addiction to contention over any point no matter how meaningless. The recruiting thread here feels like it has been invaded by the football board posters who are annoyed that their readership has fled to another place to get away from them. These posters arrive on this thread which used to be fun and beat it to fucking death with tired observations and opinions. Some people actually follow sports for fun. When somebody writes that it's foolish to get one's hopes up or he himself will wait before being optimistic, my first thought is who the fuck cares about your timetable for optimism or your presumption about the state of another poster's expectations? Who the fuck cares about an individual's crusade to make the same tired fucking joke/observation about a coach or player no matter the context? Example: Hey, we got a verbal from a highly ranked wide receiver! Tim Beck Hater: Can he call plays? Tom Herman Hater: Mensa gonna recruit all WRs this cycle? Guy Who Thinks All Recruits Should be Locked Up by June 1: I guess we're not going to get any linemen this year. We're screwed. Recruiting Domino Specialist: I guess this means we're not getting the other guy we want. All of the Above: The coaches are idiots for not openly doing what I think they should be doing. Fuck Giles! The above is arguably relevant but a beating. I'll not bother with examples of useless arguments that are basically masturbation and should be taken to a private place for continuation. You can find those on just about every page. Lastly, some say, "well, there's nothing going on. What else should we talk about?" That's the point. SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR A FEW HOURS. The fish aren't biting today, why don't we pour garbage in the stream until they are biting. The other fisherman won't mind wading through it and it's fun! We should all abstain from posting until we're fairly sure we're adding information, entertainment or a somewhat fresh take. Goofy is generally acceptable. Sententious is not. We'll all fall short of this standard from time to time, but we should at least try to make one thread in the sports boards informative and fun.12 points

Conference Championships mean a ton. We have banners on our park for them. Going to have to disagree with you there. A major goal of any regular season is to win the conference. You guys are just crapping on it because Texas just won one. But the players celebrated like mad, the University is celebrating it, and it had been seven years. Please produce evidence that Texas does not consider winning the conference title very meaningful. I have tons of actual evidence to support my position while you have nothing. I mean if it is your opinion...fine. But that is all it is and it is not a particularly compelling opinion and not one shared by the team or the University.9 points

My wife decided flush leftovers down the toilet instead of just throwing them in the trash. Now the toilet is stopped up and I can't fix it. We will have to call a plumber. I asked why she did that abd her reasoning was that the leftovers stunk so she didn't want them in the trash.9 points

Here’s what Trump being president and still having significant support tells me. It’s amazing to me that the generation that was given the most to work with, the baby boomers, bequest to them with the unlimited bounty and US control of the world by the greatest generation in history, the GI generation, has turned out to be the biggest gigantic pieces of shit in history (as evidenced by president shitstain) and have thoroughly squandered what was given to them to the detriment of everyone else that follows. Really is a fascinating sociological study as to how that can possibly happen. Circle of life I guess.7 points

The timeline should kind of tip you off that it's a bunch of nonsense. If the FBI was spying on Trump's campaign for political purposes, then why did they go to great lengths to keep everything they learned a secret until after the election? Only Republicans are dumb enough to believe that the FBI would engage in nefarious behavior to keep a Republican from being elected President and not publicly release any of the extremely politically damaging information they had until after he had been elected. And that's not even getting into the fact that the FBI was breaking protocol to publicly tar Hillary's campaign at the same time.6 points

Investigating treason = shenanigans? So now the real crime is not the crime, but the cops investigating the crime. Y’all Trumpist motherfuckers have everything backwards. Whatever happened to “If you didn’t do anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about?” Wasn’t that the law and order set’s operating slogan just a year ago?6 points

I finally made it back out on the trail this weekend. I camped out at the Lake of the Clouds (actually three small lakes) near Westcliffe, CO. The lakes were at 11,500ft. The hike up wasn't too bad, about 2,500ft of elevation gain over 4.5 miles. I had to contend with some snow when I finally go to the lakes, so I had to get my tent setup quickly. Thankfully, the snow blew over in an hour and didn't stick. My evening ended up being quite relaxing as I was the only person camping there. Unfortunately, there is currently a fireban in place, so no campfire, but I had some scotch to warm me up. Initial trail about 15 minutes from the trailhead Just after the first stream crossing Weather looked like it wanted to roll in all day Lake 1 and where I camped Just a little bit of snow Lake 2 Lake 3 Lake of the Clouds lived up to the name!6 points

We're at two, man. I hate myself for tracking this shit but I'm following recruiting in May, so I'm in too deep already (much like I was in your mom last night): February 5th – Jordan Whittington February 21st – Calvin Anderson February 28th – T’Vondre Sweat March 31st – DeGabriel Floyd April 4th – Kenyatta Watson April 21st – Tre Watson May 7th – Brayden Liebrock May 8th – ??? May 21st – ??? Courtesy of TFB. And Cain is a late-cycle decision, in all likelihood.5 points

Trump won’t fire them in person. Not his MO. They’ll talk. Then tomorrow morning, they’ll get the ax via Twitter, with catchy nicknames. Wreckless Rod and Corrupt Chris.5 points

I remember all the nights I spent as an undergrad in Austin talking about mortgage rates, income taxes, and the preponderance of Texans who speak Spanish. That would be followed by rootbeer floats and discussions about what was the best approach to long term care after we retired and our bodies began to fail us. Then we'd all gather in the TV room to catch the latest stock market news and hit the hay. I loved college.5 points

I was reading though the various threads here about Santa Fe, mass shootings, etc. and thinking about the issues involved with the disenfranchised actors when I got to thinking about an incident in my past when I was in high school (many, many years ago). I had an AP Chemistry class with an outstanding teacher. His tests were hard as shit. You had to really understand the material to be able to apply it in problem solving. This wasn't a memorize formulas and plug into calculator type of class. Teacher did a great job explaining things. He taught the class like a college course because that's what he really wanted to do (teach college). I understand that a few years after I graduated, he did move to teaching at a college some where. Anyway, because it was a Chemistry class, teacher paired up everyone with a lab partner. We didn't get a choice, he just assigned everyone in the class. I got assigned this awkward ROTC kid that no one liked (social pariah). He was .. different. Anyway, I got teased quite a bit from my classmates and friends about being lab partners with this guy. It felt really shitty. The guy was actually fairly intelligent and a decent enough lab partner as far as conducting the experiments went, but being around him was a beating to the psyche/soul. So, I talked to my teacher after class one day and asked if he could reassign me a new lab partner. He asked me why I made the request. I explained the situation and I'll never forget how he responded. He shook his head with disdain and told me how disappointed he was with me. I felt ashamed. I did get a new lab partner, but I always felt shitty about how I ditched the first one. He (ROTC kid) was obviously hurt when he found out I had requested a new lab partner. I am glad he didn't end up snapping and shooting me (et al.) back in the day. He seemed to fit the modern profile for a high risk.4 points

Pierce deserves a ton of credit this year. We are much better right now than I thought we'd be a few months ago, our shaky pitching situation notwithstanding. Winning the conference is a big deal for this team, the program, hell even the whole AD. Texas athletics has been so shitty for so long, I'll take as many conferences titles as I can. Where I think he deserves the most praise is making us smarter and more aggressive at the plate and on the bases. Also, this team has some serious moxie/no quit to it and ultimately that has to be a reflection of the coaching staff. Still, the pitching situation is a concern. Guess we'll see what happens in the post season and next year.4 points

Every one of us has a moment (usually several) where we could have acted with kindness and decency towards someone who deserved it or needed it....and we opted be selfish and even cruel. It's a simple fork in the road, and sometimes, we take the wrong one. And we can never take it back. For me, being so painfully aware of such episodes in my past serves as a huge yellow caution flag against repeating them. As a result, I am MUCH better about opting for the kind path. Not that I don't still fail, but I am aware of more chances I run across where I don't fail. Like the other night, doing a pickup a the HEB pharmacy right before they closed. There was an old man in front of me talking the pharmacist's ear off...just telling her everything about his day, his life, etc. She motioned me forward, and as I was doing my transaction, he started talking to me -- telling me about when he moved to Austin, his dad was a professor at UT in the 30s, etc. etc. -- seriously, just rambling old man shit. Mildly interesting, but inside, I just wanted to bail. But he kept talking. And it clicked in my head that it was obviously important for this guy to have someone to talk to. And what the hell, I wasn't in a hurry, I can give this guy some of my time to make him happy. So, I stood there and listened for around 10 minutes, until the pharmacist had to shut down and close the gate, making a natural break in the conversation. I'm not putting that up to show that I'm a great guy -- there's plenty of times when I'm brusque and blow people off. But it's an example of me being AWARE that another person needed some act of kindness/decency from me, and I recognized it. Because I worry about all of the times that I haven't. Being a selfish dick sometimes is the best way to learn how not to be a selfish dick. Or at least, to be better at it.4 points

Something has changed culturally with the way Millennials were raised. Our culture is doing something to alienate kids in a different way and/or not doing something to build up needed resilience. I think it's lots of little problems adding up: 24/7 bullying, the angst of seeing the perfect social media life of others, no physical outlet for the frustration, the way we raise boys, the near requirement of dual income homes, helicopter parenting, glorification of violence, insane gun culture, the noisiness of modern life, celebrity culture, high-pressure testing throughout schooling, etc.4 points

You aren't necessarily doing it, but there's a certain amount of limiting the thinking to national legislation that shows up in these discussions. National legislation is important, but there are actions that individual communities can take outside of any legislative body that can make their schools safer. School policies, community programs started by motivated individuals, or simply working to change the culture within a community. It might not do anything for kids across the country, but it can make your community safer. This is where the defeatism that plagues these threads ("the NRA owns Washington", "wait two weeks until it happens again") misses out. Even in the face of political corruption, you can make things better in your neighborhood, and that's a pretty big deal. Every fix doesn't have to be legislated.3 points

KD is a Longhorn. The hate is completely undeserved, nobody bitches and moans when this happens in another sport. I get that some Spurs fans got angry he didn't choose San Antonio, but that isn't a sound reason for all the vitriol. He left motherfucking Oklahoma, for God's sake. He should get a statue built just for that. Westbrook is a narcissistic cancer. Westbrook + motherfucking Oklahoma. Who wouldn't leave? This "Be the architect of your own championship" bullshit is just that... bullshit. It's petty, and Longhorns should be better than that to a fellow Longhorn who promotes UT and represents it well.3 points
