for the record, this is the kind of code-speaking i referenced above. trying to tie these two incidents together as though they are remotely at all similar says a lot more about how people think than they seem to know.12 points

It's almost like a draft dodger who mocked POWs for getting caught doesn't actually respect the military. But who could have known before yesterday?7 points

Yo, Trumpkins! What’s worse? Kneeling for the national anthem to protest police violence, or standing on the bodies of fallen soldiers to sing your own praises? If the active military personnel and their families on my FB feed are any indicator, Trump lost some backers yesterday.6 points

it's just amazing to me the reactionary posts you get when it comes to sports. durant and the warriors stacked the deck so much in their favor on july 4th, 2016 that people were saying they'd win the next 4-5 championships and the nba was ruined. exactly one team has given them a series since then and that team lost a HOF PG in the game that put them up 3-2 in the series. but now we need to fire the coach, change the system because it "can't win" (which is fucking horseshit because there is 1 team in the world that can beat the rockets in a 7 game series), blah blah blah. the warriors are about to go destroy the cavs in 4 or 5 noncompetitive games and win another ring. going in to the finals, they have lost 6 games combined over the last 2 postseasons, 3 of them in this series. but yeah, lets tear everything down despite being the only team that's given them any competition. what the fuck ever.6 points

I think the bolded part is wrong. The Republicans have spent the past 30+ years nurturing the racists with dog whistles. Trump made the racism explicit. He wouldn't have been able to do that without the 30+ years of work the Republicans had put in to make it possible. Trump did what he always does, he slapped his name on something someone else built and promoted the hell out of it. Not only do the explicit racists need to be completely shunned from society, but the social culture that tolerated the dog whistles that nurtured the hidden racism needs to be eradicated.5 points

My favorite show ever. Binge watched the whole thing yesterday after getting home from spending the morning on the gulf in my boat with my Vietnam vet father. Hell, I got teary eyed seeing a coast guard cutter coming down the channel, Memorial Day does that to me. Seeing the guys at the end of the last episode I couldn't hold back the tears. This morning my son starts Airborne school at Ft. Benning, so this hits incredibly close to my heart.5 points

* That's not what a strawman is. ** The "system" isn't rotten. The last 75 years have been the most peaceful and abundant years in human history. It takes constant work and attention and there are real problems to address, but the "system" did all that. *** False and ridiculous. ***** False. And if you don't know better it's because you don't put forward the effort to meet anybody running that you can support. ***** False, most people who run for office do it because they want to make things better for others. Your post is stupid and cynical, which is kind of like skepticism, except for people too lazy to learn about how the world actually works or too fearful to leave their parents basement. Which are you?4 points

We really need to stop with this 4D-level-chess thinking. When people are publicly racist they should be shamed and that's the end of it. People like Roseanne and those who think of her as a martyr for this are not reachable by logic or empathy. They are broken and you cannot subtly play to them and convert them to basic decency.4 points

My non-legal, gut reasoning: I think at the point that a) it involves his presidential powers, or b) he compels others to not cooperate in good faith with the investigation. So, no, I don't think making public statements qualify, even if the intent is undermine political support for Mueller. Consider the alternative where no one can speak ill of investigators lest it is construed as obstruction. I have a right to call cops corrupt. So does Trump. It is absurd because he is President, but I don't see it as illegal. Where it gets grey is when the frequency of his comments implies a criteria for good or poor performance for those working under him, because that involves his presidential powers to hire, fire, promote, or demote. When that becomes more than just an implication, I think it is clearly obstruction. Firing Comey is clearly obstruction to me, unless Trump can somehow argue that the way Comey investigated Flynn was incompetent. I think trying to get other intel agencies/leads to denounce the investigation is obstruction, because it is using his position to interfere with the investigation. I think his criticism of Sessions for recusing himself would qualify if he tried to get Sessions to reverse course and take over the investigation. If he dangled any pardons to potential witnesses it would be obstruction. Likewise if he pressured Ukraine to stop its investigation into Manafort.4 points

Here's our trip report for 5/26-5/28 Here's our hotel (Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico) which was fantastic with great service and an even better location. This was the view from our room. Not many views in the whole country are better than that one. From inside the National Palace. It's a much better attraction than I expected it to be and you could spend quite a few hours here. Benito Juarez' death mask inside the National Palace. Also on Saturday we went to the Torre Latinoamericana Sunday morning we woke up early and got to Teotihuacan around 8AM to beat the crowds up the pyramids The poverty along the road from CDMX to Teotihuacan is pretty eye opening and the sheer number of people in such small areas is crazy to a Texan. On the way back from Teotihuacan we caught the tail end of mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Out of the thousands that were there I was probably one of 5-6 white people. I'm not Catholic, but I do like the hats. After the trip to Teotihuacan and the Basillica we stopped at the Mercado San Juan and the lady enjoyed a pulpo tostada that the woman thought was better than any seafood plate on Isla Mujeres. Monday we had some time before our flight left and we did a lot of shopping in the Historical Center Overall the city is crazy and alive. We didn't have any troubles and the only "crime" that we saw was in Roma on Saturday night after dinner where some guy was being hauled from a bar by 3-4 cops kicking and screaming that they were going to kill him as the cops put him in a headlock and whisked him away. Next trip we'll be going to Chapultepec first since we didn't get a chance to make it this weekend. We hired a cool taxi driver that charged us $280MX/hr to take us around town all day Sunday wherever we wanted (Teotihuacan included). Uber is the way to get around when you are staying in town when their prices are about $5-6 to go from the Zocalo down to Roma or La Condesa in the XL vehicles. Overall you can't beat the experience for a 2hr flight from DFW and $150.00/night at an elite hotel on the Zocalo.3 points

It takes a special kind of brilliance to go from having nothing going on, to having a hit show, to getting everybody canned with a tweet. As of today, she may be the Republican front runner for 2020 should Trump be unable to leave his cell.3 points

this is the thing: there are a LOT of racists out and about. mostly they are those who loudly proclaim we are somehow in a post-racial society, when that is not the case at all. you can see it pretty plainly even on this website. it doesn't take much to figure out the code words they use to communicate. you can see it in real deal society, when they fish out those code words to see if they are in like company. it's like a whole other language, but sometimes they forget to speak in this code. roseanne fucked up, and showed her true colors. there is no justifying that tweet. there is not "whoops, i made a bad joke" going to work on that tweet. that's a racist's true colors coming out. fuck her.3 points

You have to fight it with their own medicine. I think shaming them and basically making sure they have no seat at the table is the most important thing. We have been too kind to them. NY Times writes think pieces about how they should be listened to and not mocked. The problem is if you don't mock them, then they continue to think they have free reign to spout hate. The media then forgives them more by calling it "economic anxieties". The people they should be protecting aren't the ones that are spouting this shit. The issue is that the true deplorables decided to use these keywords to win an election. They used those keywords to force the media to amplify their voices. Call racists what they are and don't let them change the discussion. Unless their opponents are as relentless as they are, they will CONTINUE TO WIN.3 points

I will also add that the odds of Orlando being around by the time 2019 recruits are expected to play meaningful roles are slim to none, which is just another reason why the level of talent we sign matters and saying, "I don't care who we sign because Orlando" doesn't make much sense at all. TFB seems to be pacing the field at this point with OB not even realizing there's a race going on.3 points

These first 15 years haven't given you enough data? I keep saying this, and will keep repeating it until it sinks in. The Scotty-Jordan-Grant or Scotty-Jordan-Rodman combo were better basketball players than everyone they faced in the finals. Every. Single. Team. Now let's look at Lebron. In 2006 Lebron ran through Kidd, Vince Carter, and a spry 26 yr old Richard Jefferson squad. Then he ran through Billups, Rip, and Sheed. All who were all stars that year, plus they had Prince too. Obviously he ran up against the Spurs with 3 HOF'ers, Bowen, Horry, and Finley, but take a look at the Cavs 2006 roster. In 2011 he lost to the Mavs but beat the Celtics with 4 All Stars on that squad. In 2012 with his back against the wall down 3-2 he came out and beat the brakes off of Boston, scoring 29 in the first half and only missing one shot. He cruised to an easy 45 total. He also dropped 31 in the close out game. They won the title vs Westbrook, KD, and James Harden. The complimentary pieces were better too. In 2013 they beat the Spurs, a roster that we now know had 3 HOF'ers on it, plus one of the best players in basketball named Kawhi Leonard. In 2015 he went up against GSW with no Kyrie, no Love, no bench, and still managed to take them to 6 games. In 2016 They came back and beat them. All of those things are things that Jordan never did. Jordan teams never beat anyone until they had the roster to do it. Until man for man they were absolutely better than the teams they were playing against. Many will say "that Piston team was old", or "That Boston team had fallen off". Well guess what? Guess what teams would've been playing for the NBA championship had it not been for Lebron James? To me that is why I think Bron is the GOAT. Winning titles is a team achievement. Durant may go on to win 5 titles, but does anyone really think that he is better than Bron because he has a better finals record? Bottom line, this dude seems like it doesn't matter who is on his team, he can will them to the finals at this point. He is a one man wrecking machine the likes of anything we have ever seen or likely will ever see again. Does anyone doubt that if you replace James Harden with Lebron James that they beat GSW?3 points

My FIL retired and rented a small office with another friend.... 2 Desk/chairs coffee pot and two phones. Had WSJ and a couple of other papers delivered daily. He’d get up in the am and go there for coffee, pay bills, read the paper. Meet buddies for lunch and then head home around 12:30 or 1 every day to my MIL and her list of chores. Did that for years as a bridge into retirement to keep from being bored at home all Day.3 points
