We had Dad and his best friend out for lunch Memorial Day. Dad, a Pacific War Vet, his buddy Korean War Vet. Dad is declining rapidly. A long, fruitful life, but it's still difficult to watch the decline of a guy who got up at 4 AM as a child to milk the cows, went to school, took off school at lunch to help his Dad deliver the milk, on a horse drawn cart, then back to school and repeat the next day. After the war he continued his education and became successful and respected. The paragon of a man...but Monday he was struggling to cut his pork chop. They weren't butter tender, but not that tough. I offered to help, but he declined. My son, his grandson got up and took over. Dad will often let his grandson do things that he won't let me do. There's some sort of generational divide that is different from father to son to grandson. I have bittersweet memories of the happiness it gave mother when I fed her in the nursing home during her final days. Definitely more bitter than sweet, but it had to be done and she could feel the love. That was hard. That was my "Mommie", but somehow this is different. Seeing Dad realize that he can no longer even cut his pork chop. Seeing the provider become dependent. Seeing the look on his face as I take over paying his bills and other chores he can no longer do. It's hard. It's real hard.9 points

Bullshit, that was great. The mistake is trying to predict how a series will end. The garage scene is an all timer in my book.6 points

I think this is actually most of it. One could make a good argument that the current "age" started before Trump's election, even before the 2016 campaign. (I personally think it started some time during the late Bush Administration, which of course coincides with the - wait for it - growth of the first social network giants (MySpace, a baby Facebook on colleges mostly, and of course Twitter). The whole thing really takes wing when people have been too stupid to realize shit they said or did 10 years ago is retrievable. And that someone, might in fact, dig it up. There's no doubt that for me the growth of tech-backed "pasts" of people liable for discovery and rapid distribution is THE thing. I think the political climate is a second, but a distant one. On one hand, something about it is of course satisfying, to see the bastiges get theirs. On the other hand, there's something kind of concerning about the absolute loss of privacy, or more than that, the inability to "make a mistake" and never be able to atone for it. That certainly is not what the zeitgeist of early America was.. it was a place where you COULD fail or make a mistake and climb back on the horse. Not so much today... the sheer volume of the avalanche on social media pretty much wipes out any talk of "mistake." To a degree, this enormous ability to whip up reactive frenzys is exactly what Madison was cautioning against in his Federalist papers on factions, or the "tyranny of the majority". Justice and punishment should be driven by the impartial judgment of the act, not by mob rule. The social media stuff, for as good as it is on one side of the coin, has a more sinister, dangerous darker side. While I'm absolutely delighted that the Weinsteins etc. can no longer overpower the status quo thanks to social media, I'm also wary of its ability to create monsters. The warnings and cautious lessons of Face In The Crowd, although it was made way back in 1957, rings never more true than it does today.5 points

I'll bite. Lee Atwater formulated the Republican Southern Strategy which has been pandering to racist whites for the past half century since the parties switched during the Civil Rights movement in the 60s. Trump is the logical conclusion of that racist political strategy, Frankenstein's monster coming home to roost or whatever. This is the origination and constituency of the Tea Party/rebranded Freedom Caucus/Trump's unwavering base. Trump's overt racism has now emboldened such rank bigots as Roseanne to feel they can do and say whatever they want. Connect the dots. That's WTF.5 points

I think the idea is that Bama / Ohio State will poach a coach from a very good but not quite blue blood program, and the domino effect of coaching moves will eventually open up a realistic opportunity for Orlando; i.e., OP is not suggesting that Orlando is the next coach for the Buckeyes or Crimson Tide. That said, I don't think Orlando is going to wait that long.5 points

As of the end of March 2018, UTIMCO had $44.3B under management, of which less than half consisted of PUF assets. Last I knew, the PUF lands were valued at $8B. The UT endowment funds outside of the PUF exceed what the agricultural branch college claims as their "endowment." And the best part? The tech boom that has transformed Austin pretty much took off in about 1980. The alumni that were the drivers of that boom are just now getting to the point that they are focusing on generational wealth transfers. Dell alone is sitting on $23B. Del Conte is tapping into those assets to set UT athletics up for the next chapter. The money Del Conte is going after just for UT athletics will exceed the entirety of the aggy system non-PUF endowment assets which, according to aggy, are only $1.8B (https://www.txamfoundation.com/) And let's not forget the annual operating budget for UT Austin is greater than the combined operating budgets of OU Norman and TAMU-College Station combined. In fact, once the med school gets fully operational, the annual operating budget for UT Austin will be greater than that of the entire TAMU system, making UT Austin the second UT System component to exceed the operating budget of the entire TAMU system (M.D. Anderson being the other) https://i.imgur.com/8cARAMv.jpg5 points

It's hard, but it's your turn now. Like it was his turn when you were growing up. Like it was his turn went his country called. My Dad died at age 60 and I would have given almost anything to have him another 15-20 years - I'm envious. I appreciate your father's service to our country and your continued service to him.4 points

Look, if you think that conservative media is the equivalent of the rest of the news, there's really no use arguing. You're oblivious and inoculated to facts and reality. You're brainwashed and just don't know it. A cross section of your brain would probably show an enlarged amygdala (lizard brain) which is the emotional/fear center of the brain and that's how you process data. So it's really not your fault. It's your physical brain structure physiology.3 points

This isn't that fucking hard. Mexico is playing one team at a time. I'm rooting for them. Nowhere in your rules did you say it had to be the same team all the way. If you're going to be a pedant, at least do it well. I will root for whoever is playing Mexico until such time as Mexico is no longer in the World Cup. Then I will root for Iceland until such time as they're no longer in the World Cup. Then I will root for Argentina for the duration. IDGAF after that. Probably whoever is playing Brazil.3 points

Re: "Agent of Change" People talk about "the base" referring to the GOP. There is no GOP base. They haven't the foggiest clue who is voting for them or why and haven't for a decade or more. There is a Trump base, and they are scared to death to lose that, but they don't know who that really is. But the Trump base isn't and never has been reliably GOP. He has exposed the social positions of the GOP finally as flat out ___ist and ______phobic rather than "culturally conservative" or "family values" (lots could see this already, of course, but by taking it to 11, I think he's opened some eyes), and shown that it isn't necessary to pander much to evangelicals to secure their vote. The GOP is helpless to adopt any Trump "platform" or "issues" because there aren't any, they wind up just having to support the douchebag himself. Good riddance. I hope a fiscally conservative, smaller government party emerges from the ashes, and quickly, though. And I think his outrageous self-dealing and "pay to play" exposure may finally get some people to do more than grumble something about "citizens united"** when it comes to smaller-scale, more quasi-legal versions of the same thing that are part and parcel of government/politics at the federal level. The identity of campaign donors and any potential quid pro quo should be a central campaign issue from here on out, for every candidate. That is, replace the refrain "RUSSIA!!!1111" with "PHARMA!!!!111" and "INSURANCE!!!111" and "BIG TECH!!!!!111" and so on and so forth. Also, I think his attempt to characterize himself as an "outsider" to politics may have destroyed any future interest in that meme for a presidential candidate. I found that to be the single most intriguing thing about Trump the candidate. Between him and Perot, never again. So, he's either going to be a "never again" figure that is an agent of change, or it's the end of the world as we know it, and I don't feel fine. **"Citizens United" is ultimately a cop out on the money in politics issue. It deflects voter responsibility to the mysterious and immutable Supreme Court. The press has a role in this too because giant donors are also their advertisers. They need to sack up. Until we as an electorate start routinely questioning big money behind political candidates, and shoving it up their ass, we're going to continue to get corrupted politicians.3 points

You see, Jimbo recruits nationally. He scours the country for the best players. He tells his quarterbacks not to cross their eyes and works individually with them on handing off the ball. Folks, we've never seen anything like this. That's why the sips are shaking in their faggy boots. Jimbo knows how to poke the sleeping giant to awaken it. Of course, anyone sleeping looks like a giant to him.3 points
