We had Dad and his best friend out for lunch Memorial Day. Dad, a Pacific War Vet, his buddy Korean War Vet. Dad is declining rapidly. A long, fruitful life, but it's still difficult to watch the decline of a guy who got up at 4 AM as a child to milk the cows, went to school, took off school at lunch to help his Dad deliver the milk, on a horse drawn cart, then back to school and repeat the next day. After the war he continued his education and became successful and respected. The paragon of a man...but Monday he was struggling to cut his pork chop. They weren't butter tender, but not that tough. I offered to help, but he declined. My son, his grandson got up and took over. Dad will often let his grandson do things that he won't let me do. There's some sort of generational divide that is different from father to son to grandson. I have bittersweet memories of the happiness it gave mother when I fed her in the nursing home during her final days. Definitely more bitter than sweet, but it had to be done and she could feel the love. That was hard. That was my "Mommie", but somehow this is different. Seeing Dad realize that he can no longer even cut his pork chop. Seeing the provider become dependent. Seeing the look on his face as I take over paying his bills and other chores he can no longer do. It's hard. It's real hard.9 points

It's a stupid take regardless of conference affiliation. It's a stupid take period. Smash Mouth football and having a wide open offense aren't mutually exclusive. Ohio State might have run the ball up and down the field, but they ran and run a high powered offense (when not being conducted by Tim Beck) because they could. I'm not sure it's smash mouth when Ezekiel Elliot is running untouched and free all over the goddamn field, and some of that is due directly to the fact that Ohio State spread out the defense plenty. 4 yards and a cloud of dust is an antiquated notion that only sits beneath a halo in the minds of old people who want to gas about bygone days and shake their fists at clouds. Ohio State vs Oregon wasn't 4 yards in a cloud of dust, it was 14 yards in an untouched sprint. And part of that is because of having a great offensive scheme. Unless the point of the original poster was to say "I'd much rather have bigger, stronger, and faster offensive players than the other team so I can run it down their throat" then, well, yeah. That seems rather obvious however. Personally, I'll take a good scheme period, almost regardless of the scheme, over some notion that it just feels better to play SMASHMOUTH football. In other words, why not both?5 points

How fucking sad is it that our president can’t even speak for himself in many of these tweets and instead parrots the talking points of right wing media personalities with “quotes”. As usual, Rush and Trump are lying. WASHINGTON — In the weeks after he became the Republican nominee on July 19, 2016, Donald Trump was warned that foreign adversaries, including Russia, would probably try to spy on and infiltrate his campaign, according to multiple government officials familiar with the matter. The warning came in the form of a high-level counterintelligence briefing by senior FBI officials, the officials said. A similar briefing was given to Hillary Clinton, they added. They said the briefings, which are commonly provided to presidential nominees, were designed to educate the candidates and their top aides about potential threats from foreign spies. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fbi-warned-trump-2016-russians-would-try-infiltrate-his-campaign-n8305965 points

Someone needs to repeat it every once in awhile, so it's my turn. Who knew how right Trump was when he said he could shoot a guy on Fifth Avenue and not lose any votes? To his voters, Trump is not a politician; he is the football team they paint their face for. The QB got a DUI, still love the team. The Outside Linebacker smacked his wife in public? Some women need a smack, still love the team. The coach hired a spy to steal the opponents playbook and tape their practices? Love that kind of competitor, still love the team. I predict a football jersey will be elected president within 25 years.5 points

As of an hour or two ago, my kid's back on good old American soil after 10 months of fighting ISIS and other assholes in Iraq and Syria. SPC Alexander Missildine, a 20 year old from Tyler Texas didn't make it home alive, but the rest of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division did. Hopefully y'all that practice and believe in prayer will keep Alexander in yours. Me? I'll be thinking of him (I never met him), particularly on Memorial Day, but on most regular days, like I imaging most of us parents will. Some of you cats from shaggy will remember that 5 of my son's comrades lost their lives in Afghanistan last tour, a little over 5 years ago. NASCAR does a thing for Memorial Day, and SSGT Frankie Phillip's name was on Jimmie Johnson's windshield last sunday. He finished 4th in the Charlotte race. Frankie was one of my kid's comrades in the 1-36 from Ft. Bliss. Anyway, in the next week or so, I'll be heading to Louisiana to see my boy. Hugs will be exchanged, whiskey will be consumed, and clay pigeons will be broken! My lovely DIL, a San Diego girl to her core, has lived in Louisiana long enough to be able to make a pretty damn legit pot of gumbo, so I will make a glutton of myself no doubt. And all will be well, until the next deployment, anyway. As the 10th Mountain boys say, "Climb to Glory, In Spite of Hell!"4 points

Wife normally makes what I call turkey soup, which is her version of “chili” with turkey. Barely above the school cafeteria food edible line, but I don’t have to cook it so I don’t complain. I made brisket chili on Tuesday. Started it that morning and the aroma was glorious at dinner time. She then put ketchup in her bowl citing the need to make it sweeter like her turkey soup. Papers are being drawn up by my lawyer.4 points

This all makes a lot of sense. Texas being down and aggy being in the SEC has really changed the landscape. Texas is no longer signing players that aggy wants. Take the #3 class in the nation Texas signed last year for example, there wasn't a single player in that class that 17th-ranked aggy wanted. The sips are just no longer relevant in recruiting4 points

Honestly, I think the show went out being true to itself. It was never about Russia v. USA or being spies or any of that stuff. It was about two married people and their family. They lost everything and only have each other. The garage sequence and the train sequence are some of the best television I've ever seen. Flat out. And poor fucking Stan. As if his life wasn't blown up enough Philip just drops that last poison pill on him about Renee. Gonna miss this show. Had the balls to slow-burn itself all the way to the end. Understood how to build its characters and stay true to them and how to keep the story about them.4 points

This argument is so dumb. The black is an accent, just like the lace on your panties. Gray isn't one of our colors and it's on a shit ton of gear too. Everything Texas related can't be just burnt orange and white.4 points

they are bad and have been bad for a long time. they get worse as time rolls by. everyone should be mad at every single one regardless of political orientation. i have been and will continue to be. its at the center of breaking down our government structure and may end up causing radical action (and over-reaction) in other parts of our government.3 points

It's hard, but it's your turn now. Like it was his turn when you were growing up. Like it was his turn went his country called. My Dad died at age 60 and I would have given almost anything to have him another 15-20 years - I'm envious. I appreciate your father's service to our country and your continued service to him.3 points

Here's our trip report for 5/26-5/28 Here's our hotel (Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico) which was fantastic with great service and an even better location. This was the view from our room. Not many views in the whole country are better than that one. From inside the National Palace. It's a much better attraction than I expected it to be and you could spend quite a few hours here. Benito Juarez' death mask inside the National Palace. Also on Saturday we went to the Torre Latinoamericana Sunday morning we woke up early and got to Teotihuacan around 8AM to beat the crowds up the pyramids The poverty along the road from CDMX to Teotihuacan is pretty eye opening and the sheer number of people in such small areas is crazy to a Texan. On the way back from Teotihuacan we caught the tail end of mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Out of the thousands that were there I was probably one of 5-6 white people. I'm not Catholic, but I do like the hats. After the trip to Teotihuacan and the Basillica we stopped at the Mercado San Juan and the lady enjoyed a pulpo tostada that the woman thought was better than any seafood plate on Isla Mujeres. Monday we had some time before our flight left and we did a lot of shopping in the Historical Center Overall the city is crazy and alive. We didn't have any troubles and the only "crime" that we saw was in Roma on Saturday night after dinner where some guy was being hauled from a bar by 3-4 cops kicking and screaming that they were going to kill him as the cops put him in a headlock and whisked him away. Next trip we'll be going to Chapultepec first since we didn't get a chance to make it this weekend. We hired a cool taxi driver that charged us $280MX/hr to take us around town all day Sunday wherever we wanted (Teotihuacan included). Uber is the way to get around when you are staying in town when their prices are about $5-6 to go from the Zocalo down to Roma or La Condesa in the XL vehicles. Overall you can't beat the experience for a 2hr flight from DFW and $150.00/night at an elite hotel on the Zocalo.3 points

I had some fun yesterday. One of my jobs is selling art online. I needed more storage space for about 100 small paintings, you can't just stack them. Once at Walmart I found some kind of dish drainer that works well as a Painting Storage Rack. It's the only one that ever worked right. So I go to Wally World to get some more Right Now. Walmart was all Poor People Shuffling Slowly. I didn't see the rack I wanted, so, out of a sense of morbid fascination, I approached two workers who were interrupting their conversation about a chicken place to place items on a shelf, to see if they had seen any other racks. The one with asymmetrically-placed false eyelashes came over to me. "Huuuuuuh... you wanna rack...." She had her phone out, Johnny-on-the-spot no doubt checking Walmart inventory. Then I saw that on her phone was the face of her coworker two aisles away, sharing a bon mot. "huuuuh... I'on know...." The child wandered off with her phone. She's the one who beat the other candidates at the job interview. I swung by Target to see if they had the same rack that I could get Right Now. Target was all Middle-Class People Being Important, clipping along with their butts tucked in planning the assault on Pointe du Hoc on their phones. "Yes We Are On Aisle 30 D Now We Will Finish In 5 Minutes And Then We Can Collaborate On The HOA Letter Re Dandylions." No damn rack there either. So I figure I'll do the modern thing, go home, get the brand and serial number off the racks I already have, slide a dildo up my ass, then order it from Amazon. So I unload a shitload of paintings off one rack, and-- nothing. Not a single mark of any sort. I must be looking at some Jack Ma Ali Baba Bootleg thing made from recycled Chinese death row prisoners. A search through hundreds of images on Google is fruitless. The racks I want must all now be floating in that plastic-choked dead zone in the Pacific. Nobody online has anything like it. Then it occurs to me-- I could just make it. I could make the same thing out of cardboard. I have a ton of strong clean cardboard, because eBay gives me shipping materials for free. Full circle.3 points
