It's been a bit since I've posted anything here, but this was a really solid summer meal. Halibut ceviche, some esquites, and a watermelon/mint/feta salad. There was also a cherry sangria, but I wasn't super happy with how it turned out. The best part about this meal is that everything requires minimal effort/time, but the return is great.8 points

This is the chickens coming home to roost after years of the NFL weirdly wrapping itself in the flag. The Super Bowl pregame stuff has looked progressively more like a national rally instead of a sporting event since just after 9/11. During the Rams-Pats Super Bowl with a station still in shock and mourning, it made sense. But like with anything else, the NFL saw patriotism as nothing more than another kickass marketing opportunity, turns up the levels, and yet again threw good taste out the window. I still will never understand what is the point of buying NFL team gear in army camouflage? Take that $50 and give it directly to a veterans org.8 points

Yeah, I'm gonna have to completely disagree with this. Firstly, the "far left" candidates aren't even radical. Universal healthcare, affordable college, and taxing the rich are not crazy ideas. Secondly, what if Trump is not the candidate in 2020? It's unlikely, but health issues, impeachment, or something else could keep him off the ticket. At that point, this centrist Democrat strategy bullshit means nothing except turning off the "far left" voters. All Republicans will go back to voting party lines when Trump is gone. Your strategy is a quick fix with long term horrible results. I don't think running off the "right wing hate machine" is enough. Let's kick Schumer, Pelosi, Feinstein, etc. to the curb as well. They are complicit. "Moderate" Democrats are soft Republicans. Fuck'em. Time to get the olds out of office, and the goal should be to get as many people between the ages of 18-40 to actually vote.8 points

You're confused because they both have the word balance, but a national trade balance shares nothing in common with a corporate balance sheet. You also underestimate, or simply dont know, the value of a trade deficit when it comes to maintaining the dollar as the primary global reserve currency. We arent buying Chinese goods with yuan.7 points

Supporting the Troops, much like their concern for fiscal responsibility is yet another thing the GOP are fucking lying about and always have been. Any servicemen that says anything against the GOP and especially Trump, they stick knives in their backs.5 points

None of this holds weight. Hillary is a communist! Obama is a Marxist! Bernie is a socialist! Doesn't matter who you run, the right will paint that candidate as far-left communist/socialist whatever. Democrats need to stand up for their ideas. They needed to go to Washington, pass Obamacare, and then run on it. Instead, they passed it after trying to compromise and get Republican votes (lot of good that did), shit their spines out of their asses and let Republicans grab hold of the message and turn it into a negative and then ran away from their own policies. They deserved to lose.5 points

Agreed, because he's definitely thinking of guys that played under the current staff. So those guys he's thinking of are super relevant. What's relevant is that he knows Meyer's staff can develop him into a star because that's been proven. Talking about how Texas doesn't develop players as if late-era Mack Brown has anything to do with how he'd be developed is asinine.4 points

It's texts, not calls. And you're right. We all know going in that we're going to get a lot of responses like that, and as soon as someone responds that way, they get a "thanks!" and we move on. Our purpose is to help undecided voters learn about Beto, not to try to turn hardcore Cruz fans. And there are a surprising number of undecideds out there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk4 points

I’m the lead on a fundraiser for Beto later next month, near our financial goal and just getting started! Got Beto coming to it too. Super stoked.4 points

This. The American serviceman isn’t something the GOP gives a rat’s ass about. They are just props and political tools, to be used - and discarded and/or denigrated - as convenient. If you truly support Americans who have served their country, then you should loathe the GOP.4 points

What is so special about their class? It's a good class. It isn't elite by any means. It's no better than multiple Sumlin classes, and worse on paper than at least one of them. I don't understand the "we've never recruited like this until Jimbo" narrative. You have a new coach. And he brought in a bunch of really strong recruiters with questionable coaching acumen. This is below what I expected. Way too much bread.4 points

Really tacking the important issues in this Snowflake Administration. I make it a point now to say Happy Holidays to everyone. Not because I think it's politically correct or sensitive to non-Christians, because it will wind up the uptight pieces of shit who worry about this stuff.4 points

I’m strongly on Team GetTheFuckOut. That said, I’m also a realist that knows Obama was also on the team until he was brought up to speed on what that means to dozens of other MIddle East strategies that he/we were not privy to and/or haven’t taken the time to fully understand/appreciate they way thousands of bureaucrats who live/breathe these strategies have. Presidents are slapped in the face with inside information when they are sworn in and you can see it when their actions fail to follow their campaign promises. Trump is unlikely to appreciate this insight, if he’s bothered to hear it at all.4 points

The problem with the "MAGA-mind" is that it exudes cognitive dissonance and is bereft of the faculties necessary to recognize that in order to truly be great, we must all be great together and the only way to achieve that is through diversity. As diversity flies directly in the face of their overarching belief structure, they will never be able to incorporate it into their lives thus driving them further into the hatred of anything and anyone that is not like themselves.4 points

I'm a big believer in the importance of knowing and understanding history. I read a lot and try to learn as much as possible because I believe it informs the present and I think it benefits society for people to know their past. A monument to slaves, slavery, and abolition is absolutely worthwhile. And if that would be enough to stop the whitewashing (NPI) of our history then even better still. What troubles me the most is that previous generations tried - and achieved, mostly - to put the Civil War behind them and reconcile into one nation. The Memorial Day parade in 1915 where CSA and USA vets marched together. The 1938 75th anniversary of Gettysburg where again veterans from both sides met and socialized for several days, presided over by FDR are just two examples. Those were important gestures and much was said about moving on, putting the past behind us, and building a future together. Southern racists intent on division did put up some monuments to the Civil War to make a statement about white superiority. But instead of trashing all of our monuments and namesakes, fomenting bad tempers and division, hollow gestures - why not appropriate those monuments to reflect the perils of division? What it cost our country in that war? The importance of reconciliation and unity? It seems like any politician with a modicum of sense should be more interested in unity than division, right? Or is that naive?4 points

I don't live too far from Plantation Road, so I'm familiar with the neighborhood. It's located about halfway between Wm. Cannon and Slaughter to the north and south; the neighborhood is tucked between Brodie on the west and West Gate to the east. Very few people know this, but it was once a freedman's town called Kincheonville. There are still remnants of the village in the form of an old street grid, even though it eventually got swallowed by Austin in the 1970s. Those streets are, I assume, named for the founding Kincheon family. So, there's Thomas Kincheon, Dalton, Elija, Blumie, and Minnie. There are even a couple old African American churches in this otherwise very suburban neighborhood. But here's the deal. When the 1970s portion of the neighborhood was built, the developer named a few streets that recalled slavery. For example, the Plantation Rd. mentioned in the article. There are also Oak Alley and Dunliegh, plantation names in Louisiana and Mississippi respectively, as well as a Harpers Ferry. Now, I don't know if renaming the streets is the right thing to do and it certainly wouldn't be convenient for residents. But can we at least acknowledge that, in this one instance, the developer seemed to be intentionally pouring salt in the wound? Maybe I'm overly sensitive to "white guilt." But as long as I've lived in this part of town (since '04), I've always found that naming the streets after plantations in a former freedman's town was an especially shitty thing to do.4 points

Tillman had nothing to do with Davis or Tongue. If this becomes a thing on this board, it’s going to get ugly. Just to be clear, and so this nonsense about how bad Texas wants him can end, Texas would take Gbenda in a heartbeat. He’s a player. He also doesn’t really give a fuck about recruiting. Whoever gets him will have to be patient and play a different kind of asskissing than other recruitments to land him. Texas wants a big, strong LB class this year.3 points

Was feeling German-ish (daughter just got back from a month over there). Had some nieces over, made dinner for all. Schweinebraten, rubbed with coarse mustard and a bunch of spices (think ground caraway and celery seed, on top of the usual stuff). Browned them slow cooked with carrots and onions, which made for a great gravy. German style cabbage, sautéed with butter, onions, and garlic. Seasoned with salt, pepper, and caraway seeds. Simmered with a bit of chicken stock and cider vinegar. Noodles, not german, but Czech, picked em up at Vincek’s in East Bernard. Tossed with butter, salt, and fried onions. It was all really freaking good. Not pictured: a Texas German treat, peach cobbler made with fresh Fredericksburg peaches from the farmers market.3 points

You can't reason racism away when they're actively engaged in racism and fired up by the DOTUS who has their back and will help make America Great Again (by putting the non-whites in their place). When they are forced back in their holes, and simply have to endure a society where non-whites are out among them, do business with them, become friends with their kids, etc....THAT'S when the "reasoning" takes place. So, your last sentence is dead-on. They are actively resisting reason and evidence. In fact, they've declared truth, facts, etc. to be the "enemy of the people." Fine. We won't use those things on them, since they are 100% resistant to them. What they aren't resistant to is pain. My grandfather didn't argue with nazis. He inflicted pain on them. He didn't change a single nazi mind, I imagine. But he forced them back into their hole. And while they were shoved back down there, deep in the muck where they belong, the rest of the world (including Germany) moved forward on race. Now, the nazis and their kin are back out of their holes. Time to shove them back down into it. They probably won't see the light -- the German generation that was nazi really didn't (read the analysis of the era -- they didn't change their minds, they just knew they had to keep their mouths shut). But the generations that followed -- largely free of the poison that the nazis would feed them -- were much more enlightened. Fuck these alt-right racist fuckheads. Fuck them in every way possible. Crush them. Shove them back in their holes, back into the shit they emerged from. You aren't going to change their minds. So be it.3 points

The ring was found on the shores of Normandy and she tracked down the grandson of the fallen aggy hero to return the ring. They then all went to the grave of the brave aggy who won the war for 'murica and buried it with him so it will be forever with him. When everyone was about to walk away, the grandson yelled 'Saw em off' or some shit because grandpa would have wanted it that way.3 points
