Reading the threads on Sam, the OL and Stoops’ firing got me thinking about the style of offense and culture that Tom Herman is instilling at Texas and the recent trends in Big XII defenses. The top offenses in the conference have largely been spread passing attacks for years now and the defenses have clearly adapted to the offensive style. Most defenses now feature base Nickel with multiple fronts featuring quick (and usually undersized) edge rushers to add to the pass rush. Many of them are nominally LBs (usually SAM) but are the same size a run stopping SS used to be. TCU’s Wallow (215 lbs) is fairly typical of this trend as was OU’s Striker a few years back. The most extreme example is the Mountaineers’ Jovanni Stewart playing “SAM Linebacker” at 5’8” 191. Until I started looking into this the quicker defenses were obvious but I had no idea how extreme the trend had become. And it’s hardly confined to the second level of the defense. The down linemen tend to be smaller and quicker for pass rushing purposes as well. Everybody has a 300 lb space eater playing the nose but the fronts have gotten lighter, in many cases by shifting to a 3-3-5 with what are effectively a small LB and a DB playing the edge when they present a 5 man front. Even teams that play 4 DL are using lighter players. TCU goes 240-260-302-235 across their line. All of this has been done to counter the spread passing game and honor the coverage responsibilities it forces on a defense. But it’s not a great design against a power running attack complemented by an above average passing game. Big XII DCs have not really had to worry about that on a regular basis for years now. KSU has used this combination for decades but hasn’t had the talent to be a top team for a long time now. ISU is moving in this direction but again they are not a team that is going to force anyone to redesign their defense yet. That brings us to Texas. The hard-nosed attitude and power running attack are the antithesis of the offenses that most Big XII defenses are currently designed to stop. Aggressive penetration will often just open up a cutback lane or leave a gap undefended. Stunting even more so. It’s really not good for the defense when both of the primary ball carriers for Texas are as big or bigger than the guys that are trying to set the edge and contain the outside zone runs, to say nothing of the blockers they are trying to shed just to get to the runner. At this point I don’t think the OL is good enough to dominate and abuse any defense in the conference. There are still too many mistakes and a few weaknesses. But they are definitely moving in that direction and they are certainly good enough to punish anyone who plays a light box to double or zone our WRs. And with Sam running the ball 6 defenders is a light box against our 11 personnel sets. The OL is now good enough to force teams to take major risks in coverage to stop the running game and most teams won’t be able to stop the short yardage conversions even by doing that. As the OL improves, I expect to see opponents distorting their existing defenses more and more to stop the Texas ground game. The problem they face is not just scheme but personnel. They’ve been training and recruiting to defend quick, subtle and fast passing offenses. Now they are looking down the barrel of an old school, smash mouth running offense and they have the wrong players to stop it. In the SEC where such offenses are common, 3 man lines often average close to 300 lbs across the front. One of the 4 LBs is usually a standup DE in the 260 lb range and most of the others go 230+. Usually it pays off to go against the crowd. I like what Tom Herman is doing with both culture and scheme. And I especially like the dilemma that it puts DCs in all across the conference.28 points

You look at Baylor over there and it's just all about the tradition of them covering up for rapists in their program because they could win football games.14 points

I get it. I used to think this way too. It is tiring hearing about helping others when you are just trying to help to and yours. It makes sense. But you you know why your plan went up $300 a month? It isn't cause your family is using more health care, it's because others are not insured and you have to pay for it. You really want to look out for you and yours? Then you need to make sure there is a safety net for others, even if you don't give a shit about others. You need to support this for purely selfish reasons. I am a doctor. Had a conference with a family just last week who wanted me to help their sick family member with a procedure. My hands are tied since the patient is under-insured and hospital won't allow it. I have to wait till the patient gets really sick so we can do it as an emergent, life saving procedure at significantly greater cost. But the family can't pay...so guess who will. That is why your insurance will go up another $300 this year. And the tax break is nice. Believe me... I have enjoyed it. But it's not free money. It's like being excited that your wife bought a new 85" TV and a new car, but charged it all on your credit card. Maybe you don't care cause you'll be dead, but your 3 sweet kids will care. So enjoy. You got yours and you don't give a shit about others. You are young and will never get in an accident or get sick and lose your job/insurance. Congratulations.12 points

Sam Ehlinger once wavered on his decision. It was 3rd grade and the girl of his dreams wore an A&M shirt to school. Sam had a moment of weakness, but chose to never speak to that girl again. Today, that girl competes with a herd of sheep for her man’s affection.11 points

The reason they suck is that they’re little bitches. They have a bitch ass culture. Their coach is bitch. Their players are lil bitches. Remember when we used to go into this game knowing we were gonna get our teeth fucking kicked in? We are on the other side of that now. We are going to fucking beat them up every single time we go to Dallas because Lincoln Riley plays a finesse style of football and they don’t like getting punched in the mouth. And I fucking love it. Fuck OU. Lil mark ass bitches.11 points

For the first time this cycle, I’ve heard that the McCoy situation could legitimately settle in our favor. As previously discussed in this thread during the summer, there’s not a ton of enthusiasm around Helton and consequently, the USC program. Our best outcome is a 7-6, 8-5 finish for USC in which there’s no program momentum but no justifiable reason to fire Helton yet either.9 points

Uh wat? Lay off the pipe. Im a couple generations from being in mexico? Wtf? Cages? You talking about illegal children in detention centers? Shits been going on for years, even under obama admin. Why is a big deal now? Yes you liberals are the epitome of class. Calling me names and you dont even know me. I love how white liberals, or any lib, always lump us mexicans into the “poor mexicans dont know whats good for em so lets help them understand” and that the reps are just using us. And yall wonder why we have moved over to the other side. My family was always staunch democrat and thats how I was raised. Even had close family run for office as democrat, its all I knew. I liked clinton. But yes times have changed. Blindly following liberals is crazy, hillary, ocasio cortez, even beto. But guess you guys think since he has a cool sounding mexican nickname we will vote for him. Well let me tell you i hate cruz with a passion, but Ill vote for him to keep beto out. Check the data, lots of hispanics voted for trump. More than would admit publicly cause folks like you would ridicule them. Anyway, till my future family gets moved to mexico, this mexican is reminded daily how going rep is the correct move.9 points

I'm generally pretty moderate in my political views, but ^ this is the kind of stuff that isn't helping Democrats at all. It wasn't the "attacks on Ford" that got Republican's enthusiasm up, it was the perception that the Dems were intentionally attacking a Federal judge for political points. The allegations made by Ford were not confirmed in this process, the story didn't have supporting witnesses, and it was wrong to make it into a public smear campaign, even if that wasn't the intent. It's clear to me that the Democrats mishandled this entire process by making it a public circus, rather than going for the FBI investigation as soon as the sexual assault allegations were thought to be credible. Sitting on it for a few weeks, and waiting until they were close to a vote was politically motivated in order to stall the process, and hope that the Supreme Court seat was essentially on the ballot in November. I don't think even liberals would disagree with that assessment of the events, but feel free to explain it otherwise if you want to try. What did Democrats have to lose by first investigating this behind closed doors, and then making it public if the FBI investigators didn't do their due diligence? It seems they went for the appeal to the public's emotions attempting to ride the #metoo wave, and instead of blocking Kavanaugh, they emboldened the right by creating another clear R vs D fight. Now that enthusiasm will carryover the next 4 weeks into the November election, and it will absolutely be used as a battle cry by every R in every race over the next few weeks. The Democrats made a huge mistake in the way they went about this confirmation process and it will cost them several seats this November.8 points

holy shit - just saw bregman on mlbn interview on the field after the game... "i have a question - does tiger woods tee off at 8am when he's trying to win the masters? does floyd mayweather fight the first fight of the night? or is it the main event? so the stros need to be playing primetime television, and we're looking forward to that in the alcs." yeah, it's definitely been a topic for these guys internally.7 points

I posted the 2020 quotes on that thread. The 2019 stuff is mostly fluff, other than Caleb Johnson OVing for the Baylor game. They did say this about Garrett Wilson (from Wells):7 points

I had pretty low expectations going in to 2008 after the “horrible” 2007 season, which In retrospect I would have killed for a season like that anytime post 2009, and obviously my low expectations were blown away that year. I just remember ‘08 being such a fun team to follow each week - even with the shitty hand we were dealt after the loss in Lubbock, that team made being a fan worthwhile. Even 2009 wasn’t fun - it was stressful. Colt was willing us to victories and the line was letting him get thrown around like a rag doll and not doing anything about it. I was in the Rose Bowl and I have no doubt that if Colt doesn’t get hurt the outcome of the game is different, but it was a fitting end to an era in retrospect. A transcendent player had papered over some of the larger issues in a way that wouldn’t happen again. We just didn’t know it at the time. Since then there’s been some fun games (sending Nebraska and Aggy out of the conference with losses, Case McCoy besting OU, the fool’s gold of the ND win, etc.), but the teams as a whole haven’t been fun to watch for a while. This team is different. It is fun. Obviously September 1st wasn’t fun, but since then the ride has been great. I think it goes back to low expectations being exceeded. And there is something different about this team’s attitude. 3rd downs, while not automatic like they were with Colt under center aren’t feeling like they are insurmountable. We come out of the locker room in the second half and play lights out instead of sitting back (at least since SC). Our defense flies to the ball, and our team out works and out physicals whoever lines up across from them most plays. And outside of three series in the 4th Q we beat OU so badly on offense they just fired their DC. They aren’t perfect, by far. They haven’t put together a complete game. They will probably drop a game we don’t expect them to drop - but they’ve already won several we didn’t expect them to win, so we are playing with house money. But whatever happens, Saturdays are fun again.6 points

So your argument is that a political smear job with no corroboration that has absolutely no basis in the standard parliamentary procedure used in the Senate is the same as using the rules of the Senate (which the democrats augmented to fit their goals prior to this) to slow play and eventually kill a confirmation? You dont see the difference between the two? Just because your side got out played previously using the rules doesn't mean then you get to make it up as you go to try to get what you want. These types of sweeping overreaches are what led to the loss the previous protection to help slow the partisan nature of confirmations. If those changes were not made by the Democrats, then the 60 vote rule would still be in place. Sometimes you need to recognize the unintended consequences of past decisions and accept that if you change the rules, don't be upset when the other side uses those changes against you.6 points

My last word on Kavanaugh - I spent a considerable amount of time as a conservative and pure conservative ideology doesn’t scare me. Whether it’s budget politics, equal protection and privacy cases, or the role and purpose of government. Public opinion on social issues will guide the court toward what is right, and if it doesn’t laws can and ultimately will be passed. My biggest issue here isn’t the likely closed door on equal protection for folks like me, it’s actually much more personal. Gorsuch is a fine justice, I think he will rule in a way that I will often disagree with but I don’t feel disgusted by his presence on the Court. Kavanaugh was a political hack for years, he’s proven a liar, he’s proven to have a temperament that’s suspect. And he may have done some really nasty shit when he was younger. What’s come out of this is the continuation of a society that discredits the woman in any sort of situation like this. I know Dr Ford is beside herself and probably wishes she had just let it go, but then she couldn’t live with herself, but she can’t live with this now. And it goes on and on and what the Republican narrative was made me ill - that this was all dreamt up smear tactics. Well Kavanaugh gave us all what we needed to know to make the proper decision and pick a different conservative that will rule in ways I would disagree with but they didn’t. Why this guy? I have no idea but he’s a blight on the Court from a moral vantage point and that is what bothers me the most.6 points

Number one spell his name right: Simms. Number two that's not correct. While it would certainly make a huge splash you're not appreciating the magnitude of the Simms signing in 1999. The signing of the #1 player in the nation-who was the son of a Super Bowl MVP and famous broadcaster-to a team that had been pretty much irrelevant for 17 years, made waves even outside of recruiting circles. McCoy and Sanders would be HUGE recruiting news. Signing Simms (and to a lesser extent Redding) made college football news.6 points
