Reminds me of one of my favorite poems: One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Footwork King. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints. This really troubled me, so I asked the Footwork King about it. "Footwork King, you said once I decided to follow you, You'd improve my 3 cone time and get me an offer from ATM. But I noticed that when my Footwork was the worst, there was only one set of footprints in the sand. I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me." He whispered, "My precious child, when you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I drove you to the campus of the college that paid me the most money for a visit. Now tweet that you are reopening your commitment and lets go to Georgia, I don’t have all fucking day”11 points

I referenced Wilson and the New Mexico guy on this thread about a week ago, but yeah, this thread moves fast and it's absurd trying to keep up sometimes. Texas will circle back to those guys and might do the same with Gabriel Hall. That said, they have found their Christian Jones type target and we'll be hearing about him soon. Super athletic guy who winds up either playing as a 6'3"/6'4" OT or being a quick as hell OG. Don't want to fuck anything up, but yeah. Also, Texas has a great shot to be heading an off week where they hit the recruiting trail with a 6-1 record and one of the glamour stories of the sport through the first half of the season.11 points

Can't wait until next week's edition of "Delusional aggy [or hilarious troll] makes up a story about how great aggy is from the viewpoint of another team's fan". It will probably go something like: Went to Columbia for the game and it was a great atmosphere, despite being in hostile territory. I'd estimate Aggies made for 75% of the stadium, so there wasn't really any home field advantage for the Gamecocks. Halfway through the game, the SC fan in the next seat over started chatting to me about how great and friendly the Aggy fans were. He said we were classy, and prior to this, his only other exposure to people from Texas had been sips, who were "complete trash". The guy said he was really impressed with our traditions and that he almost wished he went to A&M instead of SC. He ended the conversation saying how even though we made their schedule much more difficult, A&M was the best possible addition to the SEC.10 points

I am not gruntled. Maybe it's the eternal pessimist in me. But like Troph, this Kavanaugh thing has me rattled. I mean, how in the blue hell could that cluster have COST the Democrats? No don't answer that. I already know. I see it every day. It's kind of not fun walking around and knowing that statistically, 1/3 of everyone I see would consider me a liar, a con, a freak, a Soros shil, a loony, a liberal propagandist operative, and a fraud if I told my story. Anyway we'll find out in a few weeks. Operation M12/M12BH pop-up office is in full swing over here.8 points

Dearest mother, Today marks the sixth day of the Revolution. We are downtrodden. Our supply of kale and gluten free tacos is exhausted. Our kombucha will soon be gone. Although we have rejected all vaccines in favor of essential oils and raw milk, sickness ravages our camp. We have fought the conservatives with signs, and chants, and songs. Alas, their guns are far more effective. Please send good thoughts and positive vibes. We will need them all, as I fear Empress Ocasio-Cortez is not as skilled a military leader as we had hoped. Love, your beta cisgender son, Topher8 points

1. Reduce the season back to 11 games. 2. Require every conference to play 9 conference games. 3. Conference Championship week is moved up one week. 4. Elite 8 of CFB takes place either the week after Conference Championship or 2 weeks after. 5. Literally everything else stays the same. 6. Profit7 points

For the record, I'm not sure it's been discussed here, but Gary Johnson needs a lot of love for his work on the actual last play of the game. Just as the lateral-fest was getting going he realized that Murray was drifting in the middle of the field with a couple of blockers and made a beeline straight toward him to basically play man-to-man defense on him like a basketball player. Classic ball-you-man position and it's why he was right there to jump on it at the end. I think he also drew a holding penalty on his way to cover Murray. Just a great heads-up play by Johnson. Even if the coaches told him, which I have no idea if that's the case, it's still a great job not to lose your bearings and your assignment/responsibility in the middle of a play like that. And it takes a lot of discipline to run away from the ball in that situation to get your man. Seriously, watch it again and just keep your eyes on Johnson.7 points

I've watched an insane amount of Baylor football. I'm no dummy! /charlesdemar If you do not pressure Charlie Brewer, he will find an open receiver. That receiver will run for an amazing chunk of yards. He will be fast, athletic, and hard to catch. If you pressure him, the Baylor offense blows up, because they cannot run between the tackles! Nod your head if you remember how that limits an offense. Baylor has a great QB, fast athletic receivers, and dynamic RBs. However, if you keep your defensive pressure aligned no more than 7 yards from the LOS, they're reduced to slinging the ball quickly and hoping for pass interference. Our defensive length, experience, and versatility (even in-play) is designed to cause fits for what Baylor wants to do. Defensively, they're a hot mess. They have a talented player at just about every position group, but they have no link up play. The DE's can't reliably spill to the LB's who can't agree with the DB's on what the coverage should be. They hope for individual effort, like at DT beating his man for instant pressure. What's more likely is that a supporting player is going to blow his responsibility entirely, leading to an uncontested "length of the field" run. Stopping Collin Johnson or LJH in particular requires coordinated defensive play where defenders bracket and pass off players. While Texas lacks the linear speed to consistently run away from most defenses, it's unlikely Baylor will be able to reliably cover. In short, Baylor lives off the big play, since they cannot power drive the ball. Their big plays do happen - it's just a matter of limiting the damage and fighting again. When attacking the Baylor defense, don't get frustrated. Take the short runs when they're there and don't take sacks. They will bust coverage more often than they'll individually shine. Protecting the football just goes without saying, since the football is always life and opportunity. Baylor is not a terrible team, but their strengths play into Texas' strengths. If Texas avoids beating themselves, there's not a lot Baylor can do about it.7 points

Protip for the olds here. I'm a 31 year old millennial who just bought a house, has a young daughter, and got a huge pay increase when I took this job last year right around the time she was born. If anything I'm even more liberal now and even more willing to pay higher taxes now because I am so sick of all of the old whites giving zero fucks about any social services beyond SS and Medicare (they hypocritically think somehow these aren't socialist-like policies), sick of them supporting a party that is doing nothing to help the majority of Americans, and completely denying the overwhelming evidence that shows we're destroying this world with carbon emissions.6 points

Getting more conservative as you get older (and have more of a stake in the status quo) is one thing, but is a separate thing then what is going on here and why millennials are not going to defect to the GOP in droves as they approach 40. Because this is not the conservative people and the liberal people, this is the Trump people and a big jumbled mess of everyone else. Including a lot of people like me who 4 years ago would have happily described themselves as socially liberal and fiscally conservative. I still would, but priority #1 is stopping this systematic destruction of American values and government. If the GOP entirely goes down in flames and is replaced with a completely new fiscally conservative party that is free from the yoke of "Christians" and ethnonationalism and has modern views on social policies, I could be wooed back. But the stench of this will be on the GOP for a long time and I can't see casting a ballot for a person who has aligned themselves with this movement.6 points

Amazing SEC pride...playing only 8 conference games and filling schedules with FCS teams and generally shitty ones at that. ESPN, like CBS, has to protect their investment and over-selling the SEC has always been their M.O., just like NBC when they had most of the ND games. Nothing pisses off aggy more than Texas success, so if we just keep winning their ovaries will explode. They are like the five year old at the birthday party, trying desperately to get attention away from the birthday boy, running around and yelling until they accidentally run into a tree and are knocked out cold.6 points

I think it is easy to fall into a trap on numbers, in business or football or baseball or what have you. I am not criticizing discussion here on Powell versus the field and such. I appreciate the dialogue. Just offering up that apparently the dude has "game speed" that they really like. He's apparently an athlete take that they'll worry about positionally (how is this not a word in Webster?) later, but they do want him in this class. There are a couple of other guys that fit this too, including the dude out of Midloathian, apparently. Look for a tweak in approach on 2020/2021 targets along these lines too. They've been doing it to some degree with bigs and like the results. Apparently, they think they need to find some additional electricity and flexibility in the skill spots. Whittington also fits this. I like the fact that on the recruiting end, there is real self-awareness compared to the elite competition and the thirst is there to keep clawing and building the roster on a player by player level.6 points

Reading the threads on Sam, the OL and Stoops’ firing got me thinking about the style of offense and culture that Tom Herman is instilling at Texas and the recent trends in Big XII defenses. The top offenses in the conference have largely been spread passing attacks for years now and the defenses have clearly adapted to the offensive style. Most defenses now feature base Nickel with multiple fronts featuring quick (and usually undersized) edge rushers to add to the pass rush. Many of them are nominally LBs (usually SAM) but are the same size a run stopping SS used to be. TCU’s Wallow (215 lbs) is fairly typical of this trend as was OU’s Striker a few years back. The most extreme example is the Mountaineers’ Jovanni Stewart playing “SAM Linebacker” at 5’8” 191. Until I started looking into this the quicker defenses were obvious but I had no idea how extreme the trend had become. And it’s hardly confined to the second level of the defense. The down linemen tend to be smaller and quicker for pass rushing purposes as well. Everybody has a 300 lb space eater playing the nose but the fronts have gotten lighter, in many cases by shifting to a 3-3-5 with what are effectively a small LB and a DB playing the edge when they present a 5 man front. Even teams that play 4 DL are using lighter players. TCU goes 240-260-302-235 across their line. All of this has been done to counter the spread passing game and honor the coverage responsibilities it forces on a defense. But it’s not a great design against a power running attack complemented by an above average passing game. Big XII DCs have not really had to worry about that on a regular basis for years now. KSU has used this combination for decades but hasn’t had the talent to be a top team for a long time now. ISU is moving in this direction but again they are not a team that is going to force anyone to redesign their defense yet. That brings us to Texas. The hard-nosed attitude and power running attack are the antithesis of the offenses that most Big XII defenses are currently designed to stop. Aggressive penetration will often just open up a cutback lane or leave a gap undefended. Stunting even more so. It’s really not good for the defense when both of the primary ball carriers for Texas are as big or bigger than the guys that are trying to set the edge and contain the outside zone runs, to say nothing of the blockers they are trying to shed just to get to the runner. At this point I don’t think the OL is good enough to dominate and abuse any defense in the conference. There are still too many mistakes and a few weaknesses. But they are definitely moving in that direction and they are certainly good enough to punish anyone who plays a light box to double or zone our WRs. And with Sam running the ball 6 defenders is a light box against our 11 personnel sets. The OL is now good enough to force teams to take major risks in coverage to stop the running game and most teams won’t be able to stop the short yardage conversions even by doing that. As the OL improves, I expect to see opponents distorting their existing defenses more and more to stop the Texas ground game. The problem they face is not just scheme but personnel. They’ve been training and recruiting to defend quick, subtle and fast passing offenses. Now they are looking down the barrel of an old school, smash mouth running offense and they have the wrong players to stop it. In the SEC where such offenses are common, 3 man lines often average close to 300 lbs across the front. One of the 4 LBs is usually a standup DE in the 260 lb range and most of the others go 230+. Usually it pays off to go against the crowd. I like what Tom Herman is doing with both culture and scheme. And I especially like the dilemma that it puts DCs in all across the conference.6 points

I do not vote. I have theological convictions that inform that decision that aren’t really relevant to this thread because they aren’t on the radar of the general non-voter. It’s difficult at this point, but leave Trump out of things for a second. He’s his own thing and I admittedly don’t understand how any rational person could support him. And I can see how he changes the situation for some. But, in general, as someone who only follows politics as an observer, I don’t see any substantial differences in the two parties. Oh, I know what they claim. Republicans rail against spending-until they are the ones spending. Democrats are against war-until their guy is in office. Most of the actual differences seem to be on the margins-in the big picture, it’s meet the new boss, same as the old boss. What’s most interesting or frustrating or absurd, I’m not sure, is the way cloak room types pull for their team and justify their tactics while railing against the dirty politics of the other. Even though they’re both playing dirty, because it’s not really about means, it’s about winning. We can justify anything if we feel morally superior to the opposition. To outsiders, the game itself is sick.5 points
