  2. Fuck off with that bullshit. Do you even know what socialism is? I am so sick of these lazy and tired memes. Providing social services does not equal socialism. It isnt evil to provide basic fundamental services to your citizens like fire, police, school, roads, healthcare, etc. It also has absolutely fucking nothing to do with socialism and the economic system of workers owning and controlling the means of production, manufacturing and distribution. Providing basic fundamental services needed for a developed society and the quality of those services is the hallmark of any great society regardless of whether they are a capitalistic, socialist, or communistic driven economy.

  3. Typhoon Mary's husband does a lot of international traveling for work. He was somewhere in Asia the last week or so. She and him have been fighting really badly for months but especially while he's gone, with her sending some pretty nasty emails to him. He's supposed to be home Friday evening. About 2:45am she texts my wife saying he never came home and she's starting to freak. He's not returning texts, emails, calls, anything. She thinks he flew home and then decided to go off the grid. Like he just couldn't take her and the fighting anymore and said fuck it, I'm out. Or perhaps he got kidnapped or abducted overseas? She, of course, has no idea where he is flying in from or what airline so she can't really check to see if his flight was canceled. Morning rolls around, no hubby. Lunch time, no word. She starts freaking out even worse. Calling his parents, getting everybody in an uproar. She's waiting until some arbitrary time on Saturday before she calls the cops to put out a missing persons report. Then Saturday night, out of nowhere, dude shows up. Typhoon Mary had the day wrong the whole time.

  6. I was not a midterm voter because it never really mattered to me. White, educated, young, healthy. As Louis CK says "You couldn't even hurt my feelings." What's the worst that can happen if a vote doesn't go my way? Nothing. Because every way is 'my way.' This election cycle just made it to where I see how many people are abused by the system, how rigged the system is, how much certain people are shit upon, and who is responsible for that shitting. So for the first time I felt like I had to vote, and I would have voted D this cycle if it was virtually anyone on earth running.

  10. When I told my dad my daughter was volunteering on Election Day, he started in on Antifa and how I needed to warn her about them or maybe even not let her go. Because they might show up at a courthouse in a quiet midsize town in Alabama. I kind of smarted off and told him she’s probably in more theoretical danger from crazy Trumpkin mail bombers or racist ultra right wing shooters. Since Antifa hasn’t actually killed anyone and wouldn’t be interested in a hippie liberal 16 year old girl. He got quiet for a second and changed the subject to her upcoming National Honor Society induction. I didn’t shout him down but prior to Trump I would have just let those comments go. But the last 3-4 months have pushed me to no longer sacrifice my beliefs for feminine politeness. I won’t steal someone’s hat or spit on someone or even shout at them. But I’m done smiling and nodding while people - even friends and family - spout lies and hate. Dead people in a synagogue and almost 20 mail bombs. Silence and tolerance for people who spread the lies that inspire such is something I can no longer tolerate.

  14. Yeah, America’s been a real failure since the Johnson Administration. All we did was outlast communism, maintain and grow the world’s biggest economy, invent the personal computing industry, invent the Internet, run the fucking world, and spend five decades prospering at a level that no other nation has ever experienced in the history of the world. WELFARE RUINED EVERYTHING.

  17. Ya know, I was down in the pilot's ready room pouring coffee for the flyboys, in the Navy we call 'em aviators, and got to jawing. They admire my service to the country and education. I think of myself as something of a leader to these young men. They don't even know about my collegiate athletic background. Think how much they'd admire me and let even more into their elite circle if I were actually enlisted! Anyway, they agree with me about the circle jerking lib cabal...uh...we're break-...up...int-rnet...oblems. Per-ian ulf...angerous...di-nt vo-.. or Trump!...

  21. Talked about that with the kids at dinner last night. The concept of "somewhere" people vs. "anywhere" people. I think the psychology of that is fascinating, and makes sense (discussion below is in the British context, but the psychology translates). https://mikefrost.net/people-somewhere-vs-people-anywhere/

  22. I don't predict outcomes. I have no idea what this crazy electorate will do or why. In this case, I'm glad there is at least one candidate of conviction and integrity on the ballot, Beto. For the first time maybe ever, I felt like I was in a Frank Capra movie when I voted straight Dem. Up or down, I feel great about that vote. I don't care to vote for another robo-candidate specially packaged to be vague and pandering. Both sides churn them out in droves by either squeezing the individuality out of candidates or choosing vanilla Halloween masks in the first place. I need to have a vote I can get behind with full mind and heart. I'm revolted by my country at the moment. I'm disgusted with the face of our government at the moment. Beto is right on the issues, and he's the kind of man/candidate we need in larger numbers from all over the spectrum. Some glimmer of light would be nice in this Brisket World of darkness.

  23. Don’t know whether to laugh or cry, we drove down from Round Rock to San Antonio yesterday to check into a hotel to attend the wife's cousin’s funeral in nearby Boerne this morning. Anyway, after a blah hotel breakfast and while getting ready to leave for said shuffleoff services, Mrs. Brat checked her phone again for the church address and she discovered that the funeral is actually scheduled for NEXT Friday! fml

  24. I didn't turn out for on a regular basis, especially in the last 2 decades. Complacency and apathy were the result of feeling my vote didn't matter. They were all politicians, they were all crooked, they were all in the pockets of the special interests and corporations. Some just wore red ties, and other wore blue. They all slung mud at each other, and all came across as disingenuous liars set only on obtaining office for their own interests, not mine. I think more than anything, that last part is why Beto has stirred me. He has espoused a message of unity, compromise to benefit everyone as much as possible. He hasn't reverted to the scare tactics. He wants Texas to lead in finding solutions, not cowering from the problems. I too think Beto wins. And if he doesn't, then at least he has reinvigorated those of us who felt passed by by legislators who paid us lip service, but were puppets for much larger, greedier interests. I, like many of you, have donated both money and time to a candidate for the first time. I see others rising up around me to do the same and feel maybe our vote does still count, it just needs leadership, organization and focus. Not only Beto, but MJ, Gillum, Abrams and others are standing up and running. We aren't beaten down into submission by the lobbyists, we are rising up and retaking our system. Maybe a new party arises from this, maybe on old one is rebuilt to be better. Either way there has been an awakening and things are going to change. In the state of Texas the Dem system needs to be rebuilt, new blood needs to bring new fresh ideas and tactics. For a long time the Dem party here has basically given up, put placeholders in for statewide offices. But that is going to change. The Dems of Texas need to use this campaign by Beto to re-energize. To rebuild for the future. Truly grass roots. Like Brisket thinks, maybe it is too late, but I hope it is not.

  25. The GOP is the party of hate and fear and voter disfranchisement. "Fake Patriots and Fake Christians!" That should be the GOP Motto if there was any truth in advertising. I'll take goofy liberal ideologues whose biggest sin is pushing fiscally non-workable projects, but who are willing to work within the Constitution framework, to the party of racist and homophobic hate mongers who unabashedly try to stifle legitimate citizen voting. And you don't get fiscal responsibility with those non-liberal assholes. But with those liberal assholes you at least get non-deplorable human beings, even with some moon-mean unworkable ideas. They want to do good things, even when they are a bridge too far. The GOP is now just spewing various brands of hatred and spreading fear for the sole purpose of retaining power. For power's sake. Or to hate on gays and browns and Mooslims and the people who want to take our jobs while raping the wommins and making them dance with Negroes. Fuck them all in their black hearts. And fuck those too stupid to see it.

  33. If you were truly pro-life then you would never vote R again in your life. The best way to get of abortion is through education (abstinence-only is proven to be extremely ineffective), safe sex (access to contraception), and access to healthcare - none of which the GOP wants to fund.
