  1. Of all of the dumb things said on this site..and the old one, this might be the dumbest. Congratulations, you're a moron.

  2. If we've learned anything over the past 2 years, it's that the Constitution isn't worth the paper it's written on if no one is willing to enforce it. Trump is the poster child of what the founding fathers were trying to protect us from, yet those in power enable him, instead of holding him accountable.

  3. This is a shitty entitlement attitude. Iowa State is very good. This is the same team that punked OU in Norman last season, pants'ed OKSt in Stillwater, and crushed WVU in Ames. This is a game that informed fans would worry about even if we were all the way "back."

  5. I wrote a comment that was not worded correctly and didn’t have the right intent. I then tried to defend my thought and only exacerbated the issue. I only made myself look like something(s) I am not. I am sorry for anyone that I offended, for taking up space on this thread that I frequent daily, and not representing the website, we all enjoy, well. My apologies

  6. I would be posting on Surly as if nothing important was happening. At the same time, I'd be reaching out to that ex-colleague's mildly-attractive 22 year-old daughter who just graduated from UT and who has self-esteem issues, after having spent the past two years befriending her through a burner account on Facebook (using a burner phone), to see what she's doing over the holidays, and to see how much she hates her first real job outside of academia. Based on our last conversation, I don't think she'd have a problem walking out on her job, and I doubt they'd miss her, and it would probably be at least a month before ex-colleague and his wife thought something was wrong. I'd be reviewing my life insurance policies, to see what my wife and kids would get if I disappeared and was declared dead after so many years. I'd be checking the attic for my box of burner phones and various passports and fake IDs (including 3 separate passports for ex-colleague's daughter), cash, bank account information in Canada and Mexico, etc. I'd be debating with myself over whether to kill and dispose of the nosy bitch of a neighbor who shares a backyard with us, and who may have seen something she shouldn't have, but I know she'll keep quiet as long as I keep fucking her. The problem is that if I were to leave, she might not have an incentive to keep quiet, since the chances of me being able to spill the beans on her to her hubby and kids go way down if I have to leave town. I'd be reviewing which devices are completely safe, and which I should take with me and dump down a well on an unused piece of property about 23 minutes away from my house. I'd be shaving my beard (gotta match the passport I'm probably going to use), and using one of my burner phones to find two plane tickets out of the state. Thankfully, ex-colleague's daughter is pretty boring and has good credit, and would not be on the radar of any law enforcement or anything, and she has no major bills or anything, and we've made to sure that all bills are paid up for at least a few months. We'd run through a rehearsal of what we'd be like traveling as newlyweds whose families don't approve, a rehearsal we've done a dozen times before. Long story short, I would put the plans in action that I've been considering for the past 10 years, and we'd head out to new lives. Or I could imitate Donald Trump and just shit my pants on twitter off and on throughout the day

  8. "texas is back!" has become a popular internet meme, but whether or not that is actually the case is still to be determined. "on the way back," or "heading in the right direction" are probably more apt descriptions of the season thus far. and both of those phrases will probably still be more true of the programs overall direction than the popular interne meme regardless of the result of saturday night's game against iowa state. however... there is an awful lot, both tangible and intangible, riding on this game. win the game: you're still alive in the big 12 championship race (could even be in the driver's seat depending upon the result of the wvu/ok state game) which has been tom herman's stated goal all year long. a 9-3 finish to the regular season (assuming a win over kansas) is something even the most optimistic fan would have had trouble believing after the maryland game (hell, even after the tulsa game). even if you miss out on the big 12 championship game, you still have a solid chance of making a new year's 6 bowl game and finishing the season in the top 10. a 9-3 regular season should lead to a sense of optimism heading into the offseason and into the 2019 season -- both among the team and the fanbase. i think it matters if you go into an offseason feeling good about what you've done and where things are headed. a 9-3 regular season should be a real sell to recruits. texas has not won 9 games since 2012 and that included a bowl win. the last time they won 9 regular season games? the 2009 season which resulted in a trip to the national championship game. if herman can show that kind of progress in his 2nd year, i expect that the class of 2020 will take close notice. lose the game: your big 12 championship dreams die an 8-4 regular season is still an improvement (haven't won 8 since 2013), but it's not quite the step forward that 9-3 and in contention for the conference championship in the final week of the season would be. best case scenario bowl wise is the alamo bowl against a middling pac 12 team. a fanbase that isn't as quite as excited/optimistic about the state of the program. you see it on this very board. before the ok state game, this board was overwhelmingly positive and optimistic. after the west virginia game, there were plenty of people who were as mad and upset as they were after the maryland game -- almost ignoring everything that had happened in between. regardless of the outcome of this week's game, i think most objective observers would argue that texas is heading in the right direction under tom herman. however the result of this game should go a long way in showing just how far they've come or how far they still have to go. for these reasons, it could be argued that this is one of the biggest games of the early tom herman era. thoughts?

  9. See.....as an INNOCENT person, this is not something I'd ever need to say. Robert Mueller could send me any questions he'd want, and not one would "create legal issues" for me. Because I'm not a fucking criminal. "There are some that create more issues for us legally than others" is what a fucking criminal says.

  15. You people are so bad at this brain work stuff. I’ll use all caps mode to encourage you to read this with the same close attention you give to email forwards and facebook posts from Russian bots: WE ALREADY HAVE SOCIALIZED UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE AND EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTRY IS ON IT. WE JUST HAVE THE STUPIDEST AND MOST EXPENSIVE POSSIBLE VERSION, A SYSTEM THAT MAKES CARE THE COST CENTER TRIGGER FOR THE PROFITABLE PRIVATE GROWTH OF PAYMENT ADMINISTRATION PROCESS AND NONCARE OVERHEAD “UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE” IS NOT A SYNONYM FOR “SINGLE PAYER” AND NEITHER ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH GOVERNMENT DELIVERY OF HEALTHCARE FUNDED BY TAXATION. EVERY SINGLE SYSTEM IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD IS MORE COST EFFECTIVE THAN OURS, DELIVERING MEASURABLY BETTER AGGREGATE OUTCOMES FOR LOWER COST THAN OURS. SOME ARE UNIVERSAL BUT EXCLUSIVELY PRIVATE. A SHRINKING FEW ARE UNIVERSAL BUT MAINLY PUBLIC. MOST ARE UNIVERSAL AND SUBSTANTIALLY HYBRID OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LAYERS. OURS IS HYBRID AND ALL THE OTHERS ARE BETTER THAN OURS. ALL OF THEM. STOP THINKING AND TALKING LIKE SUCKERS. THIS “DEBATE” ABOUT CAPITALISM VS SOCIALISM IN AMERICAN MEDICINE DOES NOT IN ANY WAY REFLECT THE REALITY OF THE ISSUES AND MOST OF YOU ARGUE LIKE OLD PEOPLE FUCK.

  17. And in the process of creating the worlds greatest superpower we created an environment that established, enriched, and entrenched a massive military industrial complex that now arguably holds more influence over our foreign policy than any of our elected officials. In America, every time the government has gotten more involved in healthcare, prices have gone up. Every single time. Medicare, part d, aca you name it. But maybe next time will be different.

  22. Probably healthcare deserves its own thread. It is a complex and important topic. We should admit to a few right up front if we truly want to have an honest debate about our current system. First, the absurd notion that the US has "poorer" outcomes than other developed countries. This is patently false. Every time someone quotes this it is based on the WHO study from 2000 or so. The rankings were based on a variety of statistics with the greatest weight put on 1) Life Expectancy 2) Infant Mortality and 3) Total Medical Spend. For life expectancy, if you remove murder and suicide and car wrecks from the totals for every country- the US ranks first in the world. Murder, suicide and car wrecks are obviously issues in our society but they have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of our medical care. Total spend, if you remove elective surgeries/procedures and research dollars our spend per person is about equal with other developed countries. When Betty gets a boob job (bless her) it lowers our "ranking" in the WHO study, which is crazy. The US spends more on medical research than the rest of the world combined and, as a result, gets ranked lower by the WHO standard. Infant mortality, even the WHO in the actual report admitted that the only country that provided realistic data was the US. Further, the biggest issue with infant mortality is preemies. Most countries do not even include births that do not reach maturity in the stats. These countries include many that we are currently compared with including Canada, UK, Sweden, France, Germany etc. In fact, there are reports from the National Center for Health Statistics and European Perinatal Health Report that use much stricter definitions and, amazingly, the US ranks 1st by their methodology. Does anyone really think that normal babies born in America have a better chance of dying than other countries? It is absurd. It is also a perfect example of the whole WHO report. A preemie is born in the US with a heart problem. We will deliver the baby, operate on the heart, monitor the baby in a state of art NICU for months and will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Often the baby does die after all of that and, as a result, the "ranking" of the American medical system goes down because we spent a lot of money and our infant mortality rates went down. If we would just tell the parents the baby can not make it we would improve our WHO ranking. Sorry for the long rant, but it is really hard to have a rational debate when we do not use the truth. I think we should assume that the US has the very best medical system in the world. Meaning, if you need medical care for whatever reason- accident, illness, rehab etc.- the US is the very best place to get it. There are, certainly, ways our system can be improved. I am open to ideas where we have more of a national system. However, only if there are adequate deductibles to keep usage under control and only if funded by a national sales tax. Also, the debates between the efficiency of govt versus private are really silly. There is no question that the private sector is more efficient than the govt. The private sector has to compete. Brisket used the term "commodity" up thread and in some ways he is right. But if we admit something is a commodity, then no one should/could argue that tremendous competition for profit among the deliverers of said commodity is the absolute best way to keep costs down.

  28. And I am suggesting that there are concerns that are much greater than the bottom line when it comes to a great many public functions. I don't want Officer Jones to be answerable to shareholders, because shareholders have significantly divergent interests compared to mine as a member of the general public that is to be protected and served. I don't want Officer Jones to be cutting corners because of profit-increasing directives from corporate HQ. I don't want Officer Jones to be focusing more on traffic tickets than real crime because CopCorp. gets a cut of all revenue (shit, this is already a problem with the police as a public entity -- imagine how much worse it would be if it was a for-profit private entity). I don't want to replace the US Army with Blackwater. I want an Army that serves the Commander in Chief and Congress absolutely, with no competing loyalties. I don't want my Army to get an order and say "well, that's not in our contract." The inherent value of having certain functions answerable ONLY to "we the people," and being inherently public service entities, is often equal to or greater than any financial considerations. Shit, people hold up the Post Office as an example. A Post Office has, for centuries, all over the world, been something that EVERY government maintains. It's not because they love sweet cushy gov't jobs. It's because having a reliable service by which written communications, transactions, and goods can travel is necessary for a functioning economy. Governments build and maintain airports, and ports, and highways, and postal services, because those are force-multipliers for commerce. Which is a net good for the public as a whole. We shouldn't care if government function X (the USPS, the airport, etc.) makes a profit, or if it requires taxes to cover its bills, if that function is serving a greater public good. Shit, the military is the PERFECT example to this. Since the days of looting enemy cities ended, an army doesn't MAKE money. It protects it. It secures our safety and commercial viability. The navy protects the sea lanes so that commerce flows. We put money in, we get NO money out. But we get great benefit. The public good is a real thing. Not everything can and should translate to a P&L analysis.

  29. This country is not evenly divided. The Democrats won the house popular vote by seven points. The Senate vote by even more. In 2016, the worst Democratic candidate for President since Dukakis beat a man that brought a cult following out of the woodwork and held on to traditional Republicans won the popular vote by three million votes. That's more people than the entirety of Greater Austin. Rs have won the Presidential popular vote once in the five elections this century and twice in the past 30 years. It is a certainty they will lose it again in 2020. This country is geographically clustered, gerrymandered, and is governed by institutions designed to blunt the power of the majority. It is not, however, evenly divided. Not even close. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

  33. It doesn't have anything to do with feeling sorry for someone, it is for the basic construct of society. There's also lots of value added by people other than just economic. This is one area the world has actually devolved. We used to be much better at being patrons of music, art and myriad other things. As I said previously, this is actually a good thing, and the apotheosis of what human existence could be. People can be freed from menial existence to pursue more complete lives. And I say all this as an arch-Capitalist. Capitalism is the only vehicle that could have delivered us here.

  36. We did a stint in Massachusetts a few years ago. Lived in the suburbs outside of Boston and my wife commuted to her legal job at MIT on the train. The train only ran every 20-30 minutes, so being on time to the station was a big deal for her each morning. (I was a stay at home dad and ran my business in Houston from our house in Mass and did a lot of commuting back and forth on Continental Airlines back in those days) One day for whatever reason I was digging around in my wife's car looking for something and found a note in the glovebox that said, "You ran off and got on the train and left your car running. I turned it off and locked it and took the keys to the police station." Showed it to my wife and it turned out it had happened more than two months earlier. She pulled into the station one day as the train was loading and in her haste she just jumped out of the car and ran to the train so she wouldn't be late to work. She was too embarrassed (or lazy) to go to the police station and claim her keys and had just been driving her car with the valet key. I doubt she would have ever gone and picked them up if I hadn't made her do it once I found that note.
