"Georgia wasn't motivated" "It wasn't the CFP so it didn't matter" or some variation of this pathetic self-deception. It's comprehensively wrong, should be comprehensively refuted and deserves its own thread. UGa's defense started the game FLYING all over the field. Tom Herman saw that coming and EMBARRASSED them with misdirection. The details are here. The bottom line is that Georgia was very motivated, came out aggressive and ran themselves out of the play repeatedly. They over-pursued and pass rushed too hard. Mensa made them pay the price for being so motivated. Georgia's actions were NOT what teams do when they come out flat. Like a matador, Tom Herman goaded them, watched them run past and then stuck a sword in their ass. Orlando did the same thing to them by hitting the Bulldogs repeatedly from unexpected angles. Herman bled them repeatedly - of confidence, of pride and finally of aggressiveness. By halftime, Georgia's players were confused, abused and humiliated. By that point they had lost their motivation but they didn't start out that way. It was what Texas did to them the MADE them that way. Thank you for letting me set the record straight.39 points

“If I determine the enemy's disposition of forces while I have no perceptible form, I can concentrate my forces while the enemy is fragmented. The pinnacle of military deployment approaches the formless: if it is formless, then even the deepest spy cannot discern it nor the wise make plans against it.” ― Sun Tzu, 5th Century BC Just as Texas’ first offensive series disoriented Georgia’s defense, so the Horns’ first defensive series set the tone by confusing the offense’s reads. Georgia had no tape on the heavy fronts since they really weren’t used during the season. In addition, the slanting, stunts, blitzes, bluffs and zone drops left Fromm unsure whether to shit or go blind. In many cases he just went ahead and did both. On the first play, UGa comes out in 11 personnel but flexes out the TE for a 4 wide, single back look. Texas is in a 4-2 nickel with both ends standing up. Brandon Jones is the overhang man defending the slot. Texas 6 in the box vs 5 OL. Jones comes down as a run supporter to the C gap which allows the DL to slant to the right, straight into the inside zone run. No gain. If Fromm knew he had 7 in the box he should check to a pass play but he can’t know if the pre-snap move is a bluff. 2nd play is a checkdown behind the LOS. RB gains 4 yds. 3rd play Georgia aligns in a tight 4 wide and Texas answers with a radar look. Roach at NT is the only guy with his hand on the ground. 2 rushing DL slant right, Shark is the added rusher from the LB spot. Johnson comes delayed on a looping stunt and Graham takes the running back. Georgia picks it up and Fromm is able to hit a short sideline pass In front of the coverage to convert. On the 4th play of the drive (1st & 10) Georgia is in 20 personnel and Texas again aligns 4-2 with Locke the overhang man and Boyd in press coverage on the opposite side. Locke bluffs run support and drops. Boyd releases the WR and comes up as the force man to TFL Swift. Again Texas ends up with 7 to stop the run. Loss of 2. On the 5th play Georgia goes empty which is nuts IMO since the there is no run threat. Texas has a heavy 3 man front (Omenihu, Nelson, Roach) with Johnson coming as the added rusher and dropping 7. Fromm can’t find anyone and takes off, tackled by GJ for a short gain. The next play is 3rd and 9 with UGa in 4 wide. Texas goes 3-2 dime with both LBs up in the A gaps and BJ Foster coming up as a 2nd level defender – effectively a 5-1 front. Foster is an added rusher, Shark drops as a robber and Johnson has coverage on the RB. Fromm gets heavy pressure, can’t find anyone and chucks it OOB. I don’t think he even knew what the coverage was, much less where the weak spots should be. I’m sure the coverage looked like a Chinese fire drill to Fromm. In some cases I had to watch it 3 or 4 times to figure out what was happening. And the quick pressures definitely reset the clock in his head. The first 2 running plays put the pressure to move the offense squarely on Fromm’s shoulders. And except for the 3rd down conversion, Fromm had no clue what the coverage was. There, he was able to ID a wide open man in single coverage once his line bought him time. Todd Orlando’s defense sure looked Formless to Jake Fromm. That old Chinese guy sure knew what he was talking about.17 points

Makes sense Helton is loved by a good number of his players just like Strong was. Lots of kids really prefer being with family for the holidays.13 points

Some of you people really aren't cut out for recruiting. Bru didn't choose us, that's disappointing it doesn't make him a drama queen or a liar. Chill the fuck out for once and move on.10 points

The Longhorns’ scripted opening drive was a buffet of misdirection, a virtual smorgasbord: Play 1: LBs look to fill the A gaps while Texas runs sweep w/TE lead. Defense has to play catch up. Play 2: UGa brings 5, QB throws to the spot vacated by the blitzing LB. Play 3: Zone run. Aggressive LB over pursues, RB cuts back for +yardage. Play 4: WRs run the coverage off deep, QB checks down. Play 5: D brings 5 again, RB screen with 3 blockers. Play 6: Play action, D rushes 5 plus a spy, 12 yard hook route single coverage Play 7: Zone run for 2 yds Play 8: QB counter for 1 yd Play 9: Jerk or option route. 1st and goal at the 2. Play 10: QB lead/power. TD Notice Georgia had no trouble with the straight ahead runs but they were abused by misdirection PRECISELY because they were too aggressive. Then they couldn't stop the goal line run because the RB becomes an extra blocker and Sam has his choice of which gap to attack. The Bulldog defenders looked like fools out of position constantly. They started to doubt, to think instead of reading their keys and reacting. This paid dividends down the road. A classic example was late In the 3rd quarter. At the 1:45 mark, Texas lines up with Beck as an FB and Watson at TB. Georgia’s DL aligns with a 1-tech NT, 3-tech DT and both DEs in a wide 5-tech, almost a 7-tech. With a clear gap between the OTs outside shoulder and the DEs inside shoulder there is no way the DE should EVER lose outside leverage in this alignment. But at the snap you can see BOTH DEs standing there trying to diagnose the play. The play side end freezes and allows Cosmi to reach block to his OUTSIDE shoulder and seal the defender inside while Watson runs right past the soft corner for 12 yards. The backside DE also freezes instead of crashing down immediately to pursue the play. He at least has the excuse of a ZR keeper threat but scrapes halfheartedly well after it’s clear the ball is gone. Both of those guys were so confused they couldn’t see straight and refused to execute their assigned reads because they’d been fooled so many times before it's even clearer on the replay.9 points

of course UGA was ready and playing hard, especially after ND and OU laid a complete egg. UGA has their chance to prove that they belonged in the playoff and that's exactly what they wanted and tried to do. but they ran into a buzzsaw called Texas and got stomped. End of story.9 points

It’s closetojumping, and I’ve been more dead on about your program over the last 12 months than you could hope to be. Enjoy your fantasies with loveable Coach Helton being carried off the field next year after pulling out a 6th win to become bowl eligible. I’ll stick with the premise that he’s clueless, he’s not an exciting guy for recruits to get behind, and you’ll be waxing Pollyanna to us about the new guy, same as the old guy by this time next year.8 points

I’ve put it this way here before, but I’ll do it again: what are we going to do about all of our morons? Half of the population is of below median intelligence. But for a few freakish exceptions, they are never going to make big bucks. And, they’re going to marry other morons (selection bias: I married a fancy college girl because I was a big time college boy, and most of you did the same). Is every moron entitled to a G5 and a mansion? Of course not. And that’s not where the issue lies. It’s not that the morons don’t have a G5. It’s that they are in a position that if they miss a single paycheck, they get evicted. If their car needs a $1000 repair, they lose transportation and lose their job. If they get seriously ill, medical debt breaks them. And they see the wealth accumulating at the top, where they’re lighting cigars with stacks of $100 bills now. It is in our best interest - for ALL of us, including the wealthy, for folks who work a regular job to be able to survive a $1000 car repair, or not go broke because they got sick. They don’t need steak and caviar, but every person working a decent job should be able to breathe easy with some measure of security. If enough of them can’t, then that’s when the pitchforks come out. History is full of that lesson. We should heed it.6 points

Old rule. New commitment to enforcement. I read and post on Surly. Unless he came to Surly to see what we idoits do before setting his media plan, most of us non-995-donors had no appreciable influence on him. Correct. He wasn’t coming. Sam did what honest non-diva football players who get offered by their dream school should do. He publicly announced what he said he would when he said he would. That is not the same thing as full candor. Yes. Every man is responsible for his own behavior. What Bru did wasn’t any mortal sin, but it is what it is. Drama of his construction. Certainly there are partners with him in his attention seeking, but I don’t give him attention, nor do a lot of the guys here. I post here and more about Sam and Herman than about anybody else. And I do it because they affect Texas’s on-field results. There is not enough support in the universe for what following Texas football and hence recruiting does to our emotions. But I would like an emotional support 6-pack, please. Kliff should resign if Swann won’t release him to interview. Unless K has been deceptive about his long-term goals, S is jerking him around. K’s stock is high, and now is the time to pursue opportunity.6 points

No. Actually it doesn't. Was there Drama regarding Roschon Johnson? No. Was there drama regarding Jake Smith? No. Was there drama regarding Floyd? No. Plenty of players manage to get recruited without causing BS drama. Bru talked in interviews about seeing himself at Texas and being torn and talking to the coaches daily. Then he commits and says he was never going to Texas? Sorry this isn't sour grapes, but to act like the recruit has no role in the drama regarding their recruitment is hilarious and polyanna as hell.6 points

I don't see how anyone can blame Bru in any of this. He's done exactly what he said he was going to do when he said he was going to do it. I do believe at one point he thought about us after his OV, but since then it's really just been EJ pushing Bru. All the sites have been talking about him recently because they get bombarded hourly by readers asking for updates.6 points

Republicans don't give a shit if other Republicans are pieces of shit, because deep down they all know they are acting like pieces of shit. Civility and decorum are only expected from the left because deep down Rs know that liberals are generally acting in good faith. It's time to give up trying to argue/critique the Republican base. They have gone rogue. If they want to rejoin the world of morality, let them do it on their terms. Until then, they need to be treated as enemies and the focus should be 100% on removing the GOP from any kind of power.6 points

Of course there is. That said, in Texas, it’s hard as hell to live and work without a reliable car. Doesn’t have to be fancy, but it needs to run. Today, it’s effectively necessary to have a smart phone to participate in the social and commercial world. Doesn’t have to be the latest and greatest, but it needs to work. Here’s an example of how we’ve made a wrong turn. When I was at UT 30 years ago, I had friends and classmates who came from very little. They were able to work 20 hr a week jobs, and then work full time in the summer, and pay for college. They ended up with a degree from a flagship university with no debt, or at least very little. Today, to pay for that exact same degree, you’d have to work 50-60 hrs a week (which of course, can’t really be done while you’re trying to go to school). So, you take on a huge chunk of debt. 80s kid: works 20 hours a week, UT degree with zero debt. 2018 kid: works 29 hrs a week, UT degree with $40k debt. That puts you way the fuck down the ladder of success before you even got started, compared with just 30 yrs ago. People in that class are getting fucked. But people at the top of the ladder? They’ve seen their wealth increase dramatically. It’s the dynamic of “I’m getting fucked while the top few percent are adding to their wealth” that ain’t healthy at all. I’d like a kid from a poor family to be able to do what my friends did: work 20 hrs a week, and get a UT degree so they can start their life debt-free. I don’t want them to get anything special. I want them to get what we had just 30 yrs ago. I don’t think that’s wrong to expect, and I think it would make for a much healthier society. That’s just one example. We could do a dozen more.5 points
