  2. I guess I don't understand how you arrived at your opinion Are you 100% focusing on America (or Texas?) to form your opinion that 'it is what it is'. Because if you haven't noticed we literally are the laughing stock of the rest of the developed world. How much better would we be off with early/consistent messaging on masking (and a population with fewer morons) combined with a WWII effort for N95 mask production so that private citizens actually had access. That was feasible. Instead, we completely wasted the shutdown and didn't fix testing, contact tracing, mask production, or adhere to any sort of a plan. We opened up this summer pushing all of our chips in betting on this being highly seasonal and simply not spreading during the summer. That's it. That was the plan.

  3. It never stops with this idiot. The amount of stuff that is going to have to be undone starting next January by Biden’s administration is almost astronomical at this point. They might as well just create a cabinet position solely for that because it will take years to undo all of the damage he has caused here and around the world. They can call it the Secretary of Unfuckery.

  8. I can understand Evangelicals who voted for Trump in '16- SCOTUS appointments, hating Hilary, "Pro-life = Vote R". I don't agree with any of it, but I logically and cognitively understand it (just as I also understand the underlying fear of "other" that these folks have... brown people, gays, people from other faiths, etc.). Those are the folks that the author of this article referred to as "hold your nose" Evangelical voters. (it's also interesting that they can't understand that there might be progressives who are holding our nose and voting against Trump) But, in my humble online opinion, if you claim relationship with God through the redemption of Christ (and believe that you should follow Christ's teachings) and vote for Trump again given all that he's done (including SCOTUS appointments that seem to be a huge dis-appointments)... just stop calling yourself a Christian. Because you're obviously worshiping a different, orange bloated, God. This is the world that I was brought up in, educated in, worked (and still work) in, and am ordained in. I've worked really hard to "love the Voter and hate their Vote", and to try to be the voice of scriptural reason amidst Fox News bullshit. Even though I know people have tuned me out and condemned me to hell, I've not intentionally severed relationships with anyone based on their beliefs, even if I've created boundaries out of respect for my bi-racial family. That will change in November. Win or lose, if you continue to vote for and support that man... I'm knocking the dust off my feet and rolling. (fun fact- since everyone wore sandals and such and with public sanitation being what it was for animals and humans, "knocking the dust off" can be understood/translated as "I'm not taking any more of your shit").

  9. The sad part is I actually agree that the cat's out of the bag now. Where we differ is thinking that's an outcome to be at all satisfied with. We had a chance to look like, say, Germany does now after compliance with restrictions really exceeded expectations. Several first world countries have shown that it can be managed without the sky falling economically or socially. It's not fucking rocket science. We have the resources to do that. What we also have is a significant chunk of the population too goddamn stupid and/or selfish to do right. That think the number one priority is that they get to do whatever they want. Either no regard for, or simply no ability to grasp, long term economoc or socisl consequences or impact on other people. Essentially, a bunch of children. Spoiled ones at that. Anyone with a brain cpuld see that the only thing worse for businesses and the economy than maintaining the initial shutdowns long enough to actually be able to manage the situation going forward was reopening without those protections. A whack a mole scenario with sparodic shutdowns is an awful outcome. It's terrible for public health outcomes, terrible for economic outcomes, and terrible for overall quality of life. Not to mention a generation of kids that are going to basically end up missing two years of school. We are indeed at a point where it's every man for themself. That's a terrible place to be as a society.

  11. Some of you are thinking way too hard about this. They're just the taliban, that's all they are. Small, resentful, regressive little men (mostly) who hate change and hunger for the power to control others, because that power makes them feel strong. Religion has always been a very convenient tool for their kind and it doesn't much matter what religion it is.

  13. It's not just the risk you are talking it's potentially passing the infection to others. I see where you said that people you come in contact with are making the same choice, but some are forced to make that choice because they are essential personnel. Look at how dumb this argument looks. If you want to call an Uber you can call an Uber- but you shouldn’t have the right to make me call an Uber. If I want to roll the dice and drive drunk I should get to do that- anyone else I contact is making that same decision. It's about personal responsibility, and that right ends when it impacts the rest of society. The shelter solution sucks, full stop. We needed to ramp up testing and contact tracing when we had our first lockdown, but we fucked around hoping it would magically go away when the summer heat came. It didn't and we are now reaping what we've sown.

  14. Hard to disagree. American evangelicals have strayed so far from the teachings in the bible that its hard to call them Christians most days. The prosperity gospel stuff is a no-brainer, but even many regular Christian's views on immigration, social safety nets, basic human empathy, etc just doesnt remotely look Christian when you make them spell it out. Many feel like their tithing and spending Sundays in a big building singing allows them to justify any other position they have.

  16. Whack a mole isn't actually a bad strategy. In fact, it is one promoted by the experts (it was right upfront as a recommended action in the initial Imperial College Report). Open up (with restrictions and precautions). Use data to determine when re-shutting down would be appropriate (e.g., tracking # of cases, tracking hospitalizations, or just tracking sewage as Harvard study indicated). The goal of course is that if your precautions/restrictions are good enough, you won't need to shut down again. But, it is also possible that they just extend the period between shutdowns. That is still beneficial: (1) it buys time to learn more about the virus and development vaccines/treatments/strategies for reducing spread and (2) allows economic activity to continue with greater confidence than either a complete shut down or complete reopening with no particular plan for handling the rise in cases. Your choice of doing nothing and just going with it is lazy and, frankly, stupid. We don't need to be in a binary situation. We have more options and enough smart people to come up with and implement them. Avoiding action because the problem is difficult is irresponsible. Also, pretty confident that we do have enough information from South Korea at this point to conclude that there are good strategies that actually make this livable.

  17. Public funding is entirely non-libertarian. As far as schooling goes, the only true libertarian possibility would be homeschooling your children by themselves, whether you do it yourself or hire a teacher. Once you pool your money with even a single other parent in order to educate their kids together with your kids, you have joined a collective and have yielded some control over the curriculum to the rest of the collective. Libertarianism has always been an impossibility. The first thing libertarians would do on libertarian fantasy island is agree to a framework for dispute resolution and possibly hire security. You know, form a government. They mostly seem to want to enfranchise property and capital and disenfranchise the human being. Much like you who want to direct "your" tax money. If everyone directs "their own" tax money, then where does that leave those that have no, or very little, tax money to direct? What will happen with vouchers is that the voucher will defund the public school system by $X. It will still cost $X + $Y to attend private school. So after all the wealthy people have taken "their tax" money out of the system, added $Y to it (largely tax deductible), and paid for private school, the poor people will be left with worthless vouchers and an entirely defunded public school system which at that point has zero budget. Some of them will get to lottery in to private schools though and you'll tout that as a victory so you can feel better about yourself much like happens for charter schools right now.

  21. Vouchers are a way to get the taxpayer to offset the cost of expensive private school tuition for the rich. If there’s an actual faith element, as opposed to “Hightower predatory academy was founded in 1837 to teach Congregational ideals,” then that’s cherries on top for the evangelical community. Daddy wants a voucher to pay for Chase Worthington IV education. He doesn’t care about browns or blacks going to charter school. That’s just the bullshit to make it happen. Ignore the smoke bellowing stage act and pay attention to what the ownership of capital behind the curtain is doing.

  26. Just venting: These cock suckers really waged 3 and a half years of a misinformation campaign and are now wallowing in their own shit storm so have just thrown up their hands and said fuck it, whatever happens with Covid happens. 130k already dead and tens of thousands more to come (if not more). Maybe if 40% of the country didn't believe it was a "democratic hoax" for months we wouldn't be here. I'm sure the dots have been connected many times on this 500+ page thread, but fuck even my sister, the RGV RN was retweeting shit about this being a democratic hoax in March. "It's just a ploy to take attention away from the BEST ECONOMY IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND". Three months later and the RGV is hit with fucking mortars. Even her team of L&D nurses in Harlingen is hit with 3 cases, all of them showing physical symptoms, one severe. Now my nephew has it. And she's preaching all over facebook to wear a mask. Maybe if you (and the other followers) didn't waste months believing in that dumbshit's misinformation we would've had a chance to be prepared for this shit. But here we fucking are. [/rant]

  27. You mean the Pentagon wants that story to go away? No way, really?? P.S. Did y'all ever solve Pizzagate? Ever find all the Whitewater dead bodies? Ever figure out if Obama's birth certificate was legit? Ever figure out if Sandy Hook actually happened? Ever figure out if climate change is real? Republicans accusing anyone of spreading fake news is about as laughable as Republicans pretending to be the party of Christian values or the party of small government. Y'all are full of shit 100% of the time.
