  35. We have long since been going from dumb munitions to precision weapons because if you can do it, it's a lot easier to have one fire, one kill. It's not like mass fire can't work, it can. However, its ultimately far more cost effective to do it our way. Additionally, the way we do things now, it's much less costly for us in terms of human costs. The idea that we would ever consider just out manning and overwhelming an enemy with infantry is long gone. Quite frankly, that's WWI type shit, and if you were unlucky WWII by the Soviets. If you take the Conoco fields battle as an example (and that was 5 years ago), after an artillery barrage by Wagner, their convoy, intended for an infantry strike and over-run, never got out the starting block before they were essentially melted alive. Meanwhile, our people, save the from the initial artillery barrage, were never really in danger. We are exceedingly good at things like equipment destruction and tactical strikes. What we suck at is occupation. However, the truth is, no one is good at that, for lots of reasons. Seeing as though we have no colonial aspirations, this was the correct course of action (it's a hell of a lot better to create partnerships and beneficial to both parties than to conduct an occupation). We determined long ago that the way ultimately forward is to create a force that is lean, mean, extremely lethal at a distance, and quite frankly extraordinarily intimidating to any uniformed combatant. There are better ways to solve problems than using these capabilities and the hope is that instead of it coming to that other options can be explored. All that being said, if you want to fuck around and find out, you can, but the idea is to make that an insane option. Ironically, we spend as much we do on these advanced weapon systems to try to ensure that they are never utilized. But then you run into a dumbfuck like Putin.

  38. I meant to post this already. I didn't see this posted yet. Basically, a volunteer for the UAF from New Zealand was part of an assault troop. They were clearing a basement when someone called up, "I'm Ukrainian!" Instead of throwing a grenade, which was their first impulse, they moved forward, forced the man down with his hands away from his body. As the New Zealander came closer the man cried, "New Zealand! New Zealand!" Turns out he was a POW who had previously served with the Kiwi. He wasn't in good shape, but he was alive. Here's the tweet thread, video at the end:

  39. as a quick reminder, Notre Dame in 2020 was 10-1 going into the CFP. they had beaten then #1 Clemson 47-40 before losing to them in the ACC Championship game. Texas A&M had lost 1 game that year, 54-24 vs Alabama in Week 2. they topped out at #5 and never entered the top 4 teams in the AP , coaches of CFP poll. they were pretty clearly a good team and pretty clearly in the eyes of everyone who had a vote the #5 team and first team out in a 4 team playoff. A&M spent weeks 10-16 ranked at #5 in the AP Poll and #6 in the Coaches poll. they never were ranked in the top 4 in the CFP that year, always ranked at #5. Notre Dame meanwhile spent weeks 10-15 ranked at #2 and after losing to Clemson were #4 in both polls. they were ranked at #2 in the CFP until the final week when they dropped to #4. Clemson spent the first 9 weeks of the season at #1 in both coaches and AP polls. after they lost in week 9 they spent weeks 10-15 in the top 4 (as #4 or 3 depending on AP or coaches.) they spent all of the CFP as the #3 team until they beat then #2 CFP team ND before they moved up to finish as the #2 team in the final poll. Alabama spent all year ranked #1 2 ro 3. after week 10 they were #1 in all polls and the CFP Ohio State was #3 from week 9 on in the AP (#4 in coaches) and was never ranked below #4 in the CFP (bumped up to #3 in the final poll) they can complain all they want but... tOSU was pretty clearly in as long as they won out (they went undefeated and never dropped out of the top 4 in CFP) Alabama was clearly #1 that year Clemson was obviously a top 4 team, and their loss to ND was without their starting QB ND could have been iffy, but they easily had a better win and had been ranked high all season long. meanwhile, A&M's best win of the year was over then #4 Florida (by 3 points) - that Florida team ended up 8-4, including a bad loss at home to 5-5 LSU. they played 2 ranked teams for the regular season and went 1-1 against them. ND played 2 teams and went 2-0. so yeah. were they good that year? sure. was it a strange year? sure. were they clearly better than ND, who on paper had a better looking win and a better looking loss to another CFP team? no. was it some travesty to put ND (who made their conf champ game) in over them? no. did many people outside of College Station think it was insanity? no.

  40. !!!!EVERYBODY PANIC!!!! I have enjoyed fielding calls from every person my parents ever met asking me if their money is safe. The fact I don't have a fucking clue about any of this doesn't slow them down. I've got more education than they do so I must know all about it, even though I work in entertainment law. So, thanks a lot, SVB, you rotten lot of goat molesters, for making me talk on the phone nonstop and calm people down about whether their $50k in savings at Bank of America and their IRA at Ameriprise is safe. This is the true travesty of this entire ordeal.
