  3. Champions show up to the fucking game. Losers opt out and whine about what could've been. You know who FSU plays if Georgia beats Alabama? Georgia. We just saw the alternative reality Semifinal. I hope the real semifinals are more competitive (although if we beat Washington by 50, I'll enjoy every minute of that, too). They could've shown up, beaten Georgia, hung a "2023 Undefeated National Champs" banner in their gym. Instead, they quit and got skullfucked. They're losing losers and deserved to lose. They proved the CFP committee was right. Anyone who says differently is living in magic fairy dreamland.

  5. Anytime anyone ever complains about the NIL money in sports, it should be met with an immediate rebuttal that the money has always been there via cheating schools doing it under the table, and asking them why they prefer that a bunch of cheaters get rewarded for their actions while the rest of the rule abiding schools get screwed every year.

  9. What?!!! NYT indulging in sketchy journalism by taking random data points to spin a narrative? I would have never guessed! Look how the smug reporter implies that Texas recruited OL Class only because of $50K per year. Flood handled it well, imo.

  18. My old man was digging through some old stuff over the holidays, and brought some of it over to our house at Christmas to check out. It prompted some discussions about family history. For example, our family had places in Mexico City and Del Rio in the early 1900s. But we were closely aligned with the Porfirio Diaz regime, so once the revolution got hot enough, we had to scoot from the DF. For a time during the fighting, it was really only safe for the kids to be out in the streets, as the combatants would leave them alone. You know that famous picture of Zapata and Villa in the presidential palace, as the revolutionaries took it? Family legend is that my grandfather (a kid at the time) was in the next room at the time, along with many other locals just checking shit out: (Photo from the web, it’s not one of ours) But being aligned with the Diaz regime, we had some cool shit, like these Mexican centennial postcards: And on one of my grandfather’s stays in Del Rio, he was quite worried about his chickens, who he had left back in the DF in his sister’s care (note sent on a Diaz postcard, of course): It’s good to hop that non of your chickens has dide, I think we can all agree. We left the DF during the revolution under a flag of truce, and although some family members live there now, it took them a long time to return. A really cool bit of Del Rio history to follow….

  21. The article begins with a story about how Texas was able to rebuild its offensive line, largely through the innovative efforts of Horns with Heart and the Texas One Fund. It mentions that many other NIL funds have now modeled their efforts on what the Texas collectives came up with. There's a couple of quotes from players about how it's really helped them out. It also explains what NIL is and how it's changing college football, mentioning that the IRS is looking into how the nonprofit model of NIL collectives is in question. The VP of Texas One Fund, likely a Surlster, is quoted as saying that they'll modify as needed to be clean. Then, the article goes on to show how NIL has been used by the other three playoff teams. When discussing Alabama's NIL, they state that Saban was initially opposed to it, but now they're active. It also makes their efforts seem kind of shady (because, of course, SEC) with conflicting accounts given by sources. In explaining how NIL Washington uses theirs, they state it's been effective in retaining players by getting them heavily involved in building their brands through promoting nonprofits around Seattle that will help them in their NFL careers. One player is quoted as saying it's really cool to get involved with charities and such. The discussion of Michigan's program seems to highlight that they have one fund that is nonprofit and another that is for-profit, but there's nothing especially remarkable about it other than it could be a model for how NILs might operate in the future. There's also mention that they're raising money by getting fans to pay for experiences involving the team. I don't get the sense that the article is "pissing on CFP" in any way whatsoever -- other than the clickbait headline. It's a fairly innocuous piece overall and is likely a good introduction to NILs for folks who don't follow college football closely. For those not inclined to give clicks to the NYTimes for whatever reason or have trouble with pop-ups, here's the full article in in the spoiler:

  28. I figure the article is paywalled? If it is, this link should work: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/31/us/college-athletes-nil-sugar-rose-bowl.html?unlocked_article_code=1.KE0.W0r9.CQFPBN-nZWd1&smid=url-share But yeah, I read the article. I'm not seeing where it denigrates any of the schools. It pretty much just gives a report on how each school started with NIL and where they are now. It's a lot better written than most of the clickbait "woe for our dying bowl system" articles. The title is probably the most inflammatory thing about it. But it's the truth. College sports are changing, and the change has been needed for a while now. Seems more this article is a snapshot of where we are now than an opinion piece.

  29. Meh, home town paper of the historically largest payroll in Major League Baseball. NIL will need to be tamed no doubt, but at least buying players is now above board and legal. The bag game was insidious and I guarantee you Texas didn’t consider the SEC seriously until NIL for that reason. Basically NIL is a step in the right direction, even though it needs regulation.
