I posted this on the FB board but will post it in a few threads here too: Some of us just sorted a whole bunch of NIL stuff for the 2024 cycle for Texas football on behalf of everyone else. Texas roster management is elite in CFB at this point. Everyone should sleep easy about transfers and people leaving. Other schools, almost all of them, cannot say what I just said. Praise be to Sarkisian, Billy Glasscock, Brandon Harris, Texas BMDs, CDC, the TOF and some random, ragtag rapscallions who had the audacity to say βfuck it, this is happening and we are doing this motherfucking thing and damn the consequencesβ, and Bobby Burton.35 points

Two things can be true at the same time. Yes, Kenny Baker does not have a deep resume. One could look at this track record and say he does not have enough skins on the wall to be coaching DTs at Texas. His ability to recruit is unproven. All of these are red flags. However, Texas under Sark has shown no reluctance to spend money to get top coaches. They were willing to break the bank for Bo Davis, but dude likes to move around and had family reasons to go to LSU. Texas just went and got Arizona's DC to be its linebackers coach. Sark presumably had plenty of cash to chase a wide range of options for a DL coach. He ended up with Kenny Baker. It seems likely that since this process was not rushed, and Texas had resources, that this was a hire Sark wanted to make. So in his view Baker is a plus for the team. Given his track record in hiring coaches, and Baker's experience in the deep south, it seems prudent to give Sark some leeway and see how Baker works out. Maybe it's a tragic mistake. Or maybe it's the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Like CTJ said above, the hire is singularly great because it was so out of the blue it is going trigger a lot of debate among the populace of this message board. We get to enjoy seeing morons be morons. A few years from now we'll be able to look back at some people and laugh. Truth is, we don't know shit about fuck when it comes to how this will all play out. Embrace the chaos.33 points

Made the 4 team playoff, starting QB stays with Arch in the wings, killing the transfer portal and recruiting. An incredible run of great news and positivity over the last couple of months. One weird assistant coach hire and people are losing their minds. I think now we're officially "back". This was the moment.19 points

I didn't see this posted elsewhere, but FCB has an article saying Kenny Baker was mentored by Pete Jenkins. I did a search for Pete Jenkins in this and the Football Forum and found the following post by bar in texas d-line talk thread: Sources: New Texas defensive line coach Kenny Baker is an 'elite teacher' with NFL experience Article below.19 points

I'd like to offer something for everyone to consider regarding this hire. If the guy is charismatic and not a buffoon, he's going to have a high likelihood of being able to land whoever he wants to land on the DL front. Why? A) Banks and Sarkisian get involved with the high level recruitments. I want to say Choice does as well, in some instances. It's not like they're going to make the poor bastard go it alone. B) NIL is very likely to be as competitive for Texas on the DL front as it is for any other school or position. So, will recruiting be a slam dunk at DL? Probably not. Is it wholly dependent upon the person in role? Absolutely not. Texas will mostly get theirs, though. There are two other areas that should be drawing everyone's attention. They're also where this guy will be made or broken. 1) In the near term, is the guy a developer of talent? I am not saying he is or he isn't. I don't know enough about the dude on that front. Don't act like you do either. This is the key area where Davis excelled and is an elite position coach. 2) In the longer term, is the guy an excellent evaluator of talent? I don't think we really know if Davis did a great job on this end yet. I think seeing what become of his recruits will remain a work in progress. There are plenty of bad ass DL players in college and the NFL that were low 4 stars and 3 stars. Some of that is development and some of that is evaluation. I assume, if Baker isn't just a total bust, he'll be here for the next 3+ recruiting cycles. Given how few DLs of high quality make it to the portal, and how competitive those recruitments are out of the portal, this aspect of the job is probably the single most important for Baker's success and Texas' playoff future. It's a pretty fucking risky area and I hope he's going to be able to kick ass on that front. So, tl;dr, anyone worried about recruiting with the new guy is wasting their anxieties in the wrong spots.17 points

The rule in play here is "when you are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." Trump has managed to be above the law his whole life. Now, when all that is happening is that he is being subjected to the law and system of justice....like every other person is and should be....it feels like a great injustice to him. Again, in Trumpworld, "being accountable for your actions" = "UNFAIR! INJUSTICE!" Fuck these fucking people all the way to hell, and then keep fucking them with the spiked, acid-soaked dildo of consequences for the remainder of eternity.16 points

I've talked about this when it pops up in other forums like baseball or the other sports one, but I may never have gone into any detail here, so bear with me. LSU and OU are probably the two best examples of handling limited in NIL in a highly productive manner. Here's what I mean: Both of these schools came to the realization at some point in the first year of NIL that they were simply not going to be able to compete in NIL against all comers in all sports. They realized this through the lens of football, and soon sorted what the numbers would have to look like everywhere. Very few schools could make the effort to work on NIL against all comers across all sports. More on those later. So what did they do? They both knew they couldn't avoid football, as their institution and major donors and students cared more about that sport than anything. So for football, they've largely adopted a "target of opportunity" approach and competed where they thought they had a shot of winning whether due to Texas/Georgia/Ohio State/ATM looking elsewhere or because they had a competitive advantage, such as the player being from Louisiana or a legacy or a big fan of cajun food and abject corruption. Outside of football, they've chosen to apply significant NIL pressure to the sports in which they are actively competing for national titles and the enthusiasm from the opposition is measured. OU chose, outside of constant efforts addressed already for football, to focus on gymnastics and softball. Anything else like baseball or golf has to hunt for its own support however that coach can find it. Softball at OU is a machine. They may reel off UCLA basketball from the 60's numbers for the next decade (UT may well do this in volleyball in the same span). They've had national title success in a regular manner in gymnastics too. They're doing what they can to ensure they're as good as anyone in NIL in those two sports. LSU's work has been more driven by serendipity than anything. Livy Dunne is hotter than Georgia asphalt and was a social media star ahead of NIL. Vuori and several other brands were on her early and she's been the top NIL earner across all sports for years now. That allowed the rest of the gymnastics team to draft off of that success and they're supposedly in good shape across the board there. Marucci being based in BR and run/backed by LSU people allowed baseball to be gifted $1M a year from the jump. Texas NIL has been busting its ass from an NIL perspective in baseball and might be in second nationally, but that is a tough hump to jump each cycle for that sport. There is word that LSU is trying to take the same approach in women's basketball now, but this is a poor institution with poor backers compared to most of their national competition. Gymnastics and baseball are a lot of heads to count and cover for LSU, plus limited football means, making other sport NIL dominance mostly fantasy. Many other schools are working with this same approach out of necessity, and it is a slog for most of them. There are also many schools that have only nominal offers in NIL to provide athletes in any sport, until an athlete becomes a true star that attracts boosters or corporate. There are schools that are by and large just focused on making sure they can compete with anyone in football and/or basketball. Georgia, Alabama, USC, Tennessee, UNC, UK, UH, etc. Those are kind of easy to spot in either sport. Then there are the few schools that are able to at least pursue the ambitious goal of being able to take on all comers in every sport. Texas*, Stanford*, Oregon**, Ohio State. Those are the ones I know of, and maybe I am forgetting someone. Finally, corporate is a big deal when it can be accessed. The post above has a tweet talking about corporate being less than 10% of the NIL nationally and I'll argue that isn't true generically for all programs. Texas is accessing corporate well and that is a growing, important element. Most of LSU's non-football NIL is purely corporate if you count Marucci as such. Anyone with a Heisman candidate is accessing corporate NIL. *Rowing has like 45 participants. T&F has a shit ton too. Helping with NIL there is basically stipend inflation. T&F gets help in global corporate ways too for the best programs. **As long as Knight is alive and cares, Oregon has an ATM for NIL. Problem for Oregon will always be that, well, they're grounded in Eugene, Oregon. While you or I may aspire to live somewhere like that, it's just not a big city, bright lights, with beaches and bitches nearby kind of place.14 points

They're not going to fight. They're not going to secede. They're going to bitch and moan and do nothing to fix the problem. These states cannot secede - period. Texas especially. Pretty much would become a third world country within 5 years - all these businesses propping up Texas with jobs and people (and thus, taxes) would get the fuck out as fast as possible. Likely all the O&G companies sticks around, but Texas would just become some version of Qatar, filled with aggys and uneducated racists, while businesses like AT&T, American Airlines, Dell, Apple, all the top hospital staff in Houston, etc. moving out faster than the Clampetts headed to Beverly Hills. These companies aren't going to base their new businesses in the Republican of Texastan and those dumbfucks in Austin trying to run a fucking country. The other states trying to be viable without the tax money they get from states like Illinois, California, NY? L-O-fucking-L, there might be countries in Africa richer than they'll end up. Nope, I own none and I will be getting the fuck out immediately rather than get a gun than fight. Texas is nothing special - it's just a state. My passport doesn't say Texas citizen.14 points

Lots of Fangio talk, lol. Funnily enough I've been playing golf recently with a recently retired NFL DB that played almost his whole career(7 years) for Vic Fangio. They are very close. Fangio tried to get him out of retirement and come to Miami this past year. I'm gonna bring this hire up when we play golf again next week and see if he can share any useful info.12 points

Since A&M left the Big 12, per Sagarin computer rankings, here is the average SOS for Texas, A&M, Alabama, and OU Texas - 14.75 Bama - 15 A&M - 29 OU - 17.5 We have played tougher schedules than A&M because we have played 9 conference games plus a tough nonconference while A&M only plays 8 conference games, has a gimme annual versus South Carolina, and has a joke nonconference schedule that includes one or two FCS bye weeks per year.11 points

The important thing is to form an opinion as fast as you can before you get any useful, real-time information. This is particularly important with a negative opinion, the best ones for tiresomely crowing about your genius later on if you happen to be right one time. I'll just say that however the hire turns out, it's very insecure to conclude that Texas and Sark were "desperate."10 points
