  1. Let me preface this by saying that COVID was dangerous and we did the best we could with hard choices. That said: - It absolutely wrecked young people’s shit to all go home for like a year and half. We forget that a year is a damn long time to a kid and that people 15-25 are the ones who most need to be around peers. We are still unwinding what that means and of course in the U.S. we did it the hard way. - Youth social media is WACK. I really believe TikTok’s algorithm is tweaked to show young people videos of people who are unhappy and unstable and want you to feel that way, too. I am a huge believer in mental health and therapy when needed but there’s a whole, very popular genre, of influencers insisting that normal life challenges like going on a bad date or having a shitty job for a while are in fact brutal trauma.

  2. context or not, the bloodbath situation really helped, and here's why. trump's rallies have been batshit cult 1930's germany style for months now, but nobody was reporting about it. there was actually more reporting on why it wasn't getting reported more, but hardly anyone was talking about it. i even posted a longcat twitter thread (on here or on the downfall thread) weeks ago listing out and showing video of the 16 things he does at every rally. and everyone was like, "shit, if people could just see how crazy this really is, it would help the cause." well now that he said bloodbath, it's become a story. it snatched up 2-3 cycles and it's still alive. whether he meant the auto industry or not is 100% immaterial. we finally broke through and have msm talking about it and it's all over twitter, and finally gotten picked up by the non-msnbc's of the world. now more reporters will suck it up and go to rallies to find the next "bloodbath" moment. and captain dipshit is actually enjoying the extra publicity, and going on his wacko shows and discussing it more - as a feature, not a glitch, because trump doesn't ever make a gaffe. so he's actually fueling the fire, and likely thinking up his next bloodbath moment. he's whipping his base into a frenzy, which is what he does. they get more passionate, but these are the same people at the rallies again and again, and they're much smaller, and in off-brand towns. and with any luck, it will continue like this for the next 7 months. since the sotu, the trending has been really fucking strong in the direction we need it to be. shit, they're not even talking about him being a doddering old man shuffling around the basement anymore. they're running stories about him being hopped up on something. all because he didn't appear old and stumbling which somehow didn't match up against the woodward-and-bernstein-style crack investigative journalism researched by (checks notes) the same hacks that ran with the senile-old-man narrative the past 6 months. they even got an incidental assist from snl. i felt good in october. i feel great in march. let's fucking go.

  3. My hyphothesis as to one of the major reasons that young people are unhappy in the US: meanness is discouraging and demoralizing, kindness and caring about other people breeds contentment. And we are at a point in our cultural cycle that fucking elevates and worships meanness, cruelty, selfishness, and hurting others, and demeans and diminishes ANY concept of the common good, doing things for the benefit of your fellow man, and the like (hell, see cum rocket's reply above). You think that young people don't see that? They see it clear as day. Contrast that with one of the countries highest on the happiness index, Finland (7 for youth, 2 for elderly). The observation hit my wife like a hammer when we visited last year: they care about each other, they care about their children. As in, it is a point of national pride and identity. It is conspicuous, it is woven into their daily lives and the stories they tell each other. And I thought there was an interesting point in the discussion of "happiness" as it is observed in Finland. It's not about walking around giggling with a shit-eating grin on your face; it's about contentment, and being satisfied. Culturally, we don't value "having enough" at all. You must either have excess -- wild success, conspicuous cars and fashion, etc. -- or you are a loser and a failure. In someplace like Finland, happiness/contentment for the bulk of the country is being able to spend 2 weeks in the summer at a cabin on a lake. Many of them don't even have electricity. You sauna, you plunge in the cold lake, you drink by the fire with friends, you eat some food that makes the Finns happy (but man, most folks wouldn't be thrilled with it). And it makes you happy. Here? You best be blowing it out on a tropical beach or somesuch, eating $200 per person dinners, or else you suck. Yes, there are outliers (there are rich Finns, there are Americans who are happy and satisfied with ordinary lives). But our dominant cultural theme is NOT healthy. Kindness. Taking care of each other. Finding joy in simple things. Finding happiness in connection, not in materiality. Those are the simple and not-exactly-secret keys to happiness. Our culture is far away from all of those things, and running further away from them every day. We should stop running that direction. Then, we should take some steps in the OTHER direction.

  6. You don't think that major climate change is going to occur in our lifetimes? We are on track for a blue ocean event within a decade, and have been accelerating ocean temperature increases and acidification. Climate change is going to continue to beat us over the head, and it's a market force that you cannot out-consume. The problem is that we have capitalized things that SHOULD NOT be a major market profitability vehicle. Healthcare should NOT be a profit center. Housing should NOT be a profit center. Basic fucking sustenance should NOT be a profit center. We have more than enough to go around, but our society has decided that the best way to share the economic growth is to give tax cuts to the ultra wealthy and gut wasteful social programs like schools and libraries Gee, I WONDER why the younger cohort is so negative

  13. Yeah, that’s exactly what’s dragging the under-30 crowd down, and they won’t shut the fuck up about it. When I talk to my friends/family and others who are 30 and under, it’s all they ever talk about. They don’t talk about the attacks on the LGBTQ folks or minorities or the shitty weather. It’s like Mormons or fucking cross-fitters - they can’t stop talking about this one thing. You ask them what they think of the March Madness bracket and you get 20 minutes of bullshit about them not being able to fill out their bracket because they were thinking about the locations of some of the teams and then they began having an existential crisis about the climate and the future impact on those teams. The under-30 crowd just won’t shut the fuck up about the climate,

  16. Younger Americans are unhappy because the American dream is increasingly unavailable to them. College is insanely expensive and admissions are unbelievably competitive. Upon graduation, they are often saddled with crushing debt and housing costs that make home ownership a pipe dream. We offer no social safety net. Health care is expensive and soulless. Pensions are a thing of the past. Our laws and courts are increasingly hostile to labor, and much of the available work is in the exploitative gig economy. States are undoing child labor protections and a wave of fundamentalist bullshit has eroded the quality of public education. Profits trump well being in critical industries like air travel, utilities, and pharmaceuticals. Greedy assholes sold too many Americans on the false gospel of Jesus The Capitalist and they’ve dragged us back into the dark days of the Industrial Revolution. And you wonder why young Americans who suffer from the resulting policies are unhappy?
    12 points
  17. Uh have you looked around? No wonder they are unhappy Capitalistic greed has made everything so expensive. They can’t afford to buy a house or luxury items. God forbid we mention how expensive everyday essentials like food has become. Their wages aren’t keeping up with the rising costs of everything. And it definitely isn’t helping with paying for college/student loans, of which tuition deregulation has made the cost of college astronomical. No Boomers, you can’t pay for college working a summer job or part time during the school year Climate change. Creeping fascism in America and globally. Social media. And when you/they do acknowledge they have mental health issues, the American healthcare system has ensured they have to choose between paying for therapy/meds or food/rent Meanwhile, their parents and bosses gaslight them into thinking they’re just being dramatic and nothing is as bad as they claim bc it wasn’t bad or didn’t “exist” when they were kids I can’t begin to imagine why they’re unhappy….
    12 points
  18. On the flip side, there’s a shit-ton of social media influencer types who are putting out unrealistic lifestyle videos that make the majority of people watching feel like they are living in poverty. We have entire YouTube channels about kids unboxing toys, and it can’t be healthy for other kids to see those videos of some kid opening up a thousand bucks worth of toys in a few minutes. On my bucket list is sailing up and down the East Coast and/or doing the Great Loop, and I occasionally look at videos about it, and I came across one the other night with a couple who bitched about their crappy jobs and tiny apartment and so they quit their jobs, sold everything and got a catamaran to live on, and they are acting like anybody can do it. I looked it up and it was a $750,000 catamaran at minimum. These “glamorous” influencers have got to be doing a number on a lot of their viewers, given how easily their content is spread. When I was a kid in the 80s, there was a show, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and it was once a week and not seen by most people. Contrast that with the Kardashians that are non-stop on some TV channels, and all of the lifestyle influencer types who are pervasive across social media.

  19. Last night, despite running unopposed, the following percentages of Republicans voted against Trump: Arizona - 25% Kansas - 25% Ohio - 21% Florida - 19% Illinois - 19% These results have been consistent with the previous Republican primaries across the board. There is also another pattern developing - Trump continues to struggle with suburban voters. This is a critical demographic for his campaign. While Trump's results were fairly consistent across every group from 2016-2020, suburban white voters are the reason Trump lost in 2020. He narrowly lost those voters in 2016 to Hillary Clinton, but lost them by a wide margin in 2020 to Biden. That was the difference in the two elections. Those are also the voters who continue to refuse to vote for Trump - even Republicans.

  22. To redundantly share a story. For some reason our AP Economics teacher in HS assigned us to read this book. I didn't understand why. Years later, I'd look her up and see, sure as shit, she became a MAGA donor for 2016. Anyway, during my once an academic quarter phone call with my father out of state to check on my grades, I told him about the book. And he was living in New York and knew some guys that did deals with Trump. And he explained to me exactly how Confidence Schemes work. My father had been dealing with trucking unions and the Chicago mafia for most of his adult life, so he knew a thing or two about what he was talking about. And he told me how people like Trump fix it so that you have to try to earn their confidence and adulation, not the other way around like you'd first expect. Thankfully he didn't have to live to see Trump get elected or he'd have died again. The ghost writer for that book told our literary circle that Trump barely edited or gave notes, just made sure certain people were mentioned and certain people were left unmentioned as some sort of see-and-be-seen game. Now in middle-age, I've done some business with some LP's in New York on real estate stuff here in Texas. And most of them are Jewish and many of them have done business with Trump in the past, and they all say pretty much the same thing, "He's a complete dipshit, has no idea what he's doing, but if you can get the capital stack and term sheet right while stroking his ego, there's money to be made off of him." But most of them are done with that Organization forever. It's not worth the risk anymore. Other than Ivanka, the other kids are fucked. They'll be lucky to walk away with a few million bucks and the company will fold within months of his death. I know Reagan had some bad policies. I probably hold him in higher regard than all of you (that's a low bar, I know). But one thing I think we can all agree on is he loved the United States of America. In his bones, this was a wonderful place to him (despite not loving all Americans). This country is just an ATM to Donald Trump. it just happened to be the place he was born into that happened to have tens of millions of stupid people aching to be acknowledged and validated. Donald Trump would have become Donald Trump in any of 100 other countries in a dozen different eras in history. He was always going to be this way. We just happened to be a fertile proving ground for him. And our children will suffer because of it. I celebrated a bit when Bin Laden died. I paused when folks like H.W. Bush and Reagan and Dole and McCain died. Bad politics aside, they loved our country and they served it in myriad aspects of their life. Other than a round of beers for Dahmer's death announcement, I don't know that I ever went out reveling over another human's death, even if they were completely maniacal assholes. Nothing will compare to the celebration of Donald Trump's death. It will be exalted all around our planet. And every anniversary of it shall be a "cheat" day for all of us. And every year, our celebration will agitate his sad left-behind followers. And the look on their faces each and every year will make it even sweeter.

  33. I know we have discussed this stuff before, but some/a lot of the posters on the guru boards are special forms of stupid. I know Surly has its share of complete imbeciles, but wow. I haven't read 247, IT, or OB in forever and a day, so you forget about this stuff. On OTF now and some of it is unbelievable. There's the one type of poster who views any opinion other than that coming from a $9.95er as completely ignorable while at the same time hanging on a $9.95er's every word. You can forget about this, but when seeing it unfold in real time, it's a stark reminder of the outsized kind of weight the paid guys carry. That's hard to do with someone weighing close to a metric ton, such as Ketchum, but it's real. There are thousands of readers who think that Ketchum/Boyd/Nahlin/Richardson/FCB/Bohls/Golden are providing them with real insights about the program or recruiting. Then you have the guys who truly are remarkable in that they appear to be adult humans surviving in society without any basic notion of reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Whatever is overtly written or said by guys like Bobby or Gerry is only what can be concluded. Nothing else hinted at or vaguely touched on matters, no reading between the lines, just black and white simpleton silliness. Another type is the guy who thinks everyone needs to see and hear his every thought, usually in the form of a new thread. Tell them otherwise, and you're offending them and they'll start asking the moderators to intervene. These are the worst kind of posters. Finally, there's the old guy who is new to the Internet and has no fucking clue how anything works. They're using their real names, they divulge a bunch of personal information, they think things like "I played sports in junior high, I know what I am talking about" and believe that with a straight face. These men wear their old iphones in a case on their hip. They have a keychain hanging from a belt loop with more than 10 keys on it for everyone to see. On weekends, they wear jorts with long white socks pulled up to their knees and their collared shirt is tucked into the jorts. These people are experts on the board who likely know more than even the gurus. 36. The last 9 years have proven that rational thinking and obvious outcomes are not dependable when it comes to American politics. Trump is a terrible candidate, a loser, a criminal, and one of the worst/most unlikable human beings on the planet. He’s broke, his party is broke, and his path to victory is extremely narrow. His opponent has more money, a better track record of success, is infinitely more likable, and possesses a starkly superior moral character. The Democrats control the governorship and/or state leg and state courts in almost every swing state. There is no rational thinking that would lead to predicting a Trump victory in November. But it was the same way in 2016 and 2020.
