  1. i've been on these boards for 25 years. this is not "the internet", and should never be dismissed as that, especially to excuse or allow what might be labeled "typical and unavoidable online bullying". this is not elon's twitter. this is not reddit. this is a community, and always has been. i know many of you in real life. some i knew before and separately from these sites, and others since. i've met a whole bunch more out in the world just once or twice. i've met some of you for lunch, a beer, scored coke for one of you, and connected another of you with a midget for a bachelor party in vegas. rip donny. i am friends with derka. not "friendly", friends. i knew he and bob had been meeting and working on things, and i thought that was great of bob to do, and i know derka appreciated it. i did not become friends with derka to help him through his mental issues, i became friends with him because i like him and we have a lot in common and i enjoy talking sports and tv shows with him. we text most every day. i've texted with his mom, and she is a wonderful and supportive human being. happy birthday, betsy. derka gets worked up here, like others do at home, a sporting event, a bar, or a grocery store. everyone has their outlets. that's who he is, and if you don't think he's worked hard and gotten a shit-ton better over the years, you haven't been paying attention. derka has an issue letting things go and settling back down from a worked-up state. he'd be the first to admit this. he has bitten his tongue, so to speak, dozens, if not hundreds of times, when people would antagonize him. it's bullshit it was happening to begin with, but he was doing his best not to exacerbate the issue. what you've seen from him on this site is not perfect, but it was the best he could do, and i consider it admirable. again, i'm his friend, so i am a biased commenter here. there's nothing about this situation that doesn't suck. i think most of us are on the same page on that. surly is not groupthink. it's not an echo chamber. even the cloak room isn't that way, though it's often characterized as such. anyone who says that hasn't been over there in several years. there are lots of opinions, lots of discussions, and lots of characters that fill out this community. but there's only one derka. immamac is trying to change that, and i disagree mightily with this decision. it also sucked that it was made in advance, which makes this even more inexcusable. flying off the handle and making a rash decision at least could be understood, if not justified. yes, it is his decision to make, no one is disputing whether he has that ability. yes, it sucks that derka and bob were on the road to recovery, and immamac stepped in and reversed that progress. ironically, this type of reversal is exactly the type of thing that drives derka over the edge. he jumped through the hoops, he did the work, he shared himself, he was honest and self-deprecating about it. and now he's told no, it's easier just to rid ourselves of you. someone upthread called derka a cancer. i know because i negged him. it's probably my 2nd or 3rd ever neg-rep and i stand by it. cancer needs to be removed to make the body stronger. that's not what's happening here. if derka is gone for good, it will make things worse. worse for him and worse for this community. from reading through this thread, it's pretty obvious that i'm not alone in this opinion. a few pages ago, immamac said that sometimes derka would get banned, and he would get pm's asking for him to be reinstated, because derka had asked people to do this. as someone who has sent one of those pm's, i can say i was not asked to do so. if you know derka at all, you would know he doesn't go around begging others to fight his battles. shit, how could anyone not know this? i saw what happened and sent those messages on my own accord, because while i don't always do what's right, i always know what's right. and this is not right. reinstate him. it's what's right.

  2. ATM just got a commitment from yet another DE transferring from UCF. Dude was a team captain, but he amassed 47 tackles and zero sacks last season. Anyway, in reading the moderators on the aggie 247 site, it appears that they're gearing up for a number of new portal exits, particularly from the DL. The strongest part of their roster, with the most talent, is at Edge and DT. They're about to exchange more 4 and 5 stars heading out for more try-hards heading into the program. Another thing mentioned is that they're going to be 5 guys over the scholarship limit in August if they don't have more attrition. I was kind of surprised by this until I went through it quickly. They've swapped out a ton of highly ranked talent with a mediocre recruiting class and a bunch of transfers that zero top 15 programs would have taken. I don't think people, including here, realize just how shitty and untalented their 2024 roster is going to be. I type that without knowing whatever other harm will be done to them in the upcoming portal window.

  5. In browsing some of the recruiting updates on the aggie sites, it kind of dawned on me that there isn't a ton of serious overlap regarding recruiting targets in the 2025 cycle between Texas and ATM. Let's look at it. QB Lacey, Russell - ATM isn't on the list for either player. TB Stewart, Davison - ATM isn't on the list for either player. WR Ffrench, Moore, Lockett, Harris, McCutcheon, Choice - ATM isn't on the list for any of these players. Kelshaun Johnson is giving ATM courtesy mentions but the guy has 5 OVs scheduled, yet nothing for ATM. Marsh - ATM leads big, but the family is trying to keep Texas interested and Texas doesn't want to burn bridges so they'll let him come around and such. This will be claimed as an ATM win and I will applaud it as well. TE Wilson - ATM wasn't on the list. Townsend, Armstrong - ATM is either in the lead or a serious contender in both recruitments. OL Mills, Coleman, Coleman, Brooks, Petty, Gaston, Langi - ATM isn't on the list for any of these players. Fasusi - ATM is way behind Texas and OU. Newton, Thomas, Rogers - ATM is a serious contender for these players, but not a leader for any of them. DT Brown, Sharma, Autry, Charles, Wynn, Sims, Guidry - ATM isn't on the list for any of these players. Williams - ATM is way behind Texas and LSU. Sanders - ATM and Texas are co-leaders. I don't know how highly this guy is ranked on either board, but I don't feel like Texas has made any kind of push. Edge Lowe, Jackson, Shanklin, Orogbo - ATM isn't on the list for any of these players. LB Petitjon, Barnes, Tagoa'i, Cunningham - ATM isn't on the list for any of these players. CB Brew, Anding - ATM isn't on the list for either player. Sellers, Currie, Chester - Both Texas and ATM are on the lists with numerous other contenders for each player. Safety Williams - ATM isn't a serious contender. Phillips, Guillory - Both Texas and ATM are in serious contention for each player. So, while ATM is mentioned in some spots, the reality is that the only battles appear to be for a TE, an OL or two, a DT that neither school may want, 3 corners, and 2 safeties. That seems like nothing compared to various other cycles. In looking at ATM's 5 current commitments, Texas was polite around the Rink recruitment, but there isn't an ATM commitment that Texas would actually take. If I find the time and motivation, I'll check out OU and LSU in the same vein.

  12. The 247 mods just posted a write-up about the DTs this spring. They had to do so using the guidelines that The Elk requires for any personnel write-up, so, if you read them often enough, you can see where they're skirting subject matter. What does that mean? 1) No mention of GBD until a poster asked about him. Full write-up with no mention. Tarp comes back and says "Elko says that he's injured" or something to that effect. They've done everything they can to avoid discussing the guy this spring. 2) The SR Wisconsin transfer, Johnson, is physically overwhelmed for the position but he plays better then his physical attributes should allow. Because they're fucked at this position, he may actually be in the rotation. 3) The gigantic fat guy of Pacific Islander descent has lost weight without picking up any quickness or strength advantages, apparently. If he doesn't just lodge himself into the center of a play like a buttplug and stay stuck, he's a huge liability. 4) Albert Regis is their best hope to fill in for McKinley Jackson and Raikes. He can't stay healthy or display the ability to stay on the field for an entire drive, but he needs to really get some advanced shit done this season and play bigger than his size. 5) Jadon Scarlett is a wasted scholarship. 6) DJ Hicks looks terrific and is living up to his highly rated billing. 7) Shemar Turner may be forced to play inside this year, where he should have been all along. They will have to hope for better production than his dogshit numbers over the first 2 seasons. That's if he doesn't transfer. 8 ) They might be proper fucked at NT if they can't find a massive NT in the portal that they can outbid everyone for, which Tarp thinks to be unlikely. There's no one on the roster currently to match the quality that they've had for the last 6 seasons. They lost the wrong guys to portal. I honestly think that last bit might be too much, even though he's trying to be subtle, for Tarp to get away with on The Elk Pravda front. I won't be surprised if he gets thrown into the aggie media gulag for a few weeks. That's where they put reporters, naked, into a pillory and then flog him or her with a horsewhip while forcefeeding them giant cans of store-bought spaghetti until they either die of gluttony and shame, Elko-style, or confess the profound remorse and promise to never cross The Elk again.

  13. There's some pretty funny stuff happening on the aggie sites, as expected. Posters have fully committed to the premise that 5 stars are bad. Not all posters, but many, and that's spilling into arguments among the posters about recruiting quality. The value in taking the position that 5 stars are bad is that, with Elko's recruiting approach, poster expectations are aligning with the mediocrity of what Elko is bringing in. Tom Loy showed up with a post stating that things are looking very promising for this guy: https://247sports.com/player/marcus-garcia-46144270/ The competition for this guy is limited to P4 also-rans similar to ATM and then there's the faded blue blood, Nebraska. I don't give a shit if a guy is a 3 star or a 5 star, provided the evaluators are people I trust. We've all lived the experience of this kind of shit, however. 3 star that no top 10 team is in on, taking them early, needing to add 30+ pounds to have a prayer of being effective in college, etc. I wouldn't want to go back to that for all of the rice in China. Anyway, here are some of the more enjoyable comments: analytical "ruxin said... (original post) A mid 3 star? I would hope we like our chances… - Come on. Stars are a Jimbo Fisher evaluation. We have a smarter staff who do their own evals. Look at the kid's measurables and film. And then remind yourself that actual professional coaches know a lot that we don't. Stars ain't the best yardstick. We get 5* busts and 3* breakthroughs. Ainias was a 3*. Speedy Noil was a 5*. Touting stars makes a person look like they are a tshirt fan. 9 upvotes" 313Aggie "Rgibson04 said... (original post) If your competitors are getting 4-5 stars, then we should at least match that - Michigan was ranked 14 in talent composit, Washington was 26th. The game has changed." MacIdaho "ruxin said... (original post) Yes, seriously. Is Denver Harris a bust? Maybe, but he was good enough as a freshman that he got picked up by LSU. His problem isn't talent. Same ... - Aggigeboy86 2 posts below your response to me hit the nail on the head. Most of them didn’t do good here. I don’t care if they had off the field issues or not. They weren’t near as productive as many other 5 star players have been in the past few years for other teams. That was the point I was trying to make. If they go somewhere else and do good they still didn’t do it here, which is what is important to me. Advani80 also understood exactly what I was trying to convey as well." dichotomic "2008 recruiting vibes. Great footwork, ankle flexibility, nice forearms" catorano "Can't have enough Garcias. They practically built Kyle."

We're in NW Austin (Milwood) and we got so fucking lucky - the clouds parted for about 10 minutes right around totality. 30. It just pisses me off. I remember driving to work, early one morning, and hearing of the collapse. As the day wore on, more news came out about the death toll and injuries. Texas offered to cancel the game (the B12 south had already been clinched), but the Ags insisted on playing. (Some said, “that’s what the dead students would have wanted”. No, idiot, they would have wanted to live, but they couldn’t have that, could they?). Mack Brown heavily encouraged those outside the two-deep to give blood. There are two competing narratives of the game. From the Texas side, it was a shambles from the time UT checked into their College Station Hotel (phone calls to players’ rooms all night, breakfast canceled with a late morning kick off), through several bad officiating calls helping the Ags (Ag Brian Gamble drew a 15 years penalty for laying Simms out while yards out of bounds; Slocum convinced the ref to pick up the flag). The Ags remember the game as Aggie spirit saving the day after a disaster by helping the Ags defeat Texas. The full culpability of the Ag campus in the bonfire collapse wouldn’t be known until several weeks later. Incompetents put in charge, warnings ignored, just a screwed up mess all the way around. Of course they revere that weekend as one of their greatest moments.

You’ve been staring through your eclipse glasses for so long while this opaque disc slowly covers up the filtered orb of the sun. It’s a subdued, filtered, monochromatic view. Sort of abstract. Time ticks by. At about 50% coverage I noticed the wind start to pick up. Then things slowly started getting darker. Then the temperature started to drop. The sun becomes a thin crescent and then finally it’s gone and there’s nothing but black in your filtered view. Then you take off the glasses and BAM! You’re back in full color and there it is in all its majesty and it’s beyond your imagination. It’s bigger and brighter and whiter and CLOSER than you were expecting. There’s deep dark sky around it with stars and planets and an eerie twilight glow all around the horizon. At my latitude it got pretty cold. It’s still early spring. I wore my hoodie. My neighbors were donning theirs. Every second was precious. There were whoops and hollers from some viewers. Mostly it was just “Wooooooow.” It was ethereal, surreal. Just astounding. Breathtaking. Awe inspiring. Not gonna lie, I shed a few tears. Just out of happiness and joy and wonder. It was so worth it. You really can’t over-hype it.

  35. No. There is no "get" on this, nor is there justification. I may be two martinis deep tonight on my thought process, but the idea that modern day judges "get" anything on the founders is just bullshit. They want to manipulate what they want by cherry picking phrases in order to use their power to enforce what they have deemed is what the founders wanted. As if. I understand your point, but they, like other originalists, conveniently ignore that which they proclaim to be fact is rather subjective and that they only hold that power because we have "given" it to them. Because we are stupid. So, uh, yeah. Mrs. Whiggins needs to calm down.
