While not hashed out on this site very often, the notion that recruiting rankings don't matter is still a popular position permeating CFB discussions across the Internet and in sports bars all across the country. I am curious what the 2024 draft class might tell us regarding that and other takeaways when thinking about how the services handle their bullshit. We've only seen Round 1, but I figured some thoughts from that round alone could be interesting. I put together some simple numbers that are spoilered below as a resource. Here are a few takeaways: 1) If you want to be a high draft pick, it is an imperative to play for what will now be P4 programs or Notre Dame. Verse may or may not have been discovered when at Albany. Besides him, you have Mitchell. 30 picks started at P5 and 31 finished at P5. 2) ESPN and Rivals were consistently rating these players lower, sometimes much lower, than 247 and, when they were ranking guys, On3 (they started ranking in 2021). This isn't surprising to us, I think, but it's crazy how much credence both services are still given when they're as lazy it gets. 3) 15.6% of the 32 picks are former 5 stars. 5 stars represent less .5% of the recruiting classes each cycle. Yet again, the notion that a 5 star ranking should carry some credence is fully validated by this first round. 4) Half of the picks were 4 stars while 4 stars represent roughly 15-20% of each ranked recruiting group. Again, the "coach up them 3 stars that want to be a X University ballplayer!" is folly as a general rule. If you find yourself saying this as a fan, you'd better damned sure hope you have a coach like Jonathan Smith or Kalen Daboer developing your team, otherwise you're probably fucked. 5) One place in which the rankings are suspect is on the OL. We knew this, but it is still stark. 5 of the drafted OLs in the first round were 3 stars. 2 4 stars and 2 5 stars. The 2 4 stars were ranked in the 300s and barely reached the 4 star ranking. One of those 4 stars is Joe Alt, who ESPN and Rivals basically thought was worthless. Of the 5 stars, Latham is the highest consensus ranked player of the 32 draft picks. He was viewed as about as can't miss as there ever are. Strong recruiting work by Kyle Flood on that one. The other guy, Mims, was similar and consensus ranked #10 in the same class. In effect, even can't miss guys ... miss (Tommy Brockermeyer was consensus #6 in the same cycle as these two, also solid recruiting work by Flood in terms of signing him), but you'd like to land those and otherwise have an OL coach who knows what in the hell they are doing with raw materials when they sign them. 6) 9 transfers out of 32 picks (28%), 4 QBs, 3 DEs, 1 WR and 1 OT. Not sure if there's anything to make of that, I guess. It's a small sample size and all that, so make of it what you will. I'm curious if others have any thoughts when looking at this, however.19 points

This is a lot simpler than you are all making it. It has everything to do with personal integrity and nothing to do with anything else. Hartzell cannot be trusted anymore with situations like this, he's the wrong person. He handled the DEI thing extremely poorly and now this. He isn't suited for the role. People who argue that the role is placating the BoR and whatnot, no it's not that's not the role, it's to protect and promote what's good for UT and it's faculty, staff and students as a premier education and research institution. Also he literally called fucking riot police to a peaceful protest on his own campus. I was on campus, it was fucking insane and I didn't even get out to see it until around 5PM. Some of you have no idea and are very much armchairing this shit, I was on campus, it was an embarrassment how ridiculous the response. Some of you legitimately have not looked at the actual footage of what happened. It was literal fascism on the UT campus silencing a message that they didn't want.16 points

Bobby with a story on Worthy on OTF As many of you know, Xavier Worthy had the drops in the latter half 2022. Well, I was the first media person to tell folks after the season that he had a broken hand during that time frame. Texas did not want the news out lest it change how some opponents defended them. Some said that the injury was fake - merely an excuse for Worthy having the drops. But facts are Worthy was wearing a soft cast most of the second half of that season, not just around the facility but also to class, etc. But this part is where I think things get interesting, and also reveal a little more about who Worthy truly is. So, let's talk about how the injury actually occurred. Worthy was so pissed after a game that season, one where he actually had a good game but the team lost, that he punched a locker in the locker room. No, not the smartest move he's ever made. You could even call it immature. But this is where many fans got the notion of who Worthy is wrong. Anyone who ever second guessed him as a prima donna who only cared about stats, etc., it kind of speaks to a different level of intent that not many people were aware he has. He's intensely competitive. Winning means a lot to him. Now, Worthy is not the perfect receiver. He's relatively thin. He has good hands, but not great ones. He wasn't always the easiest to deal with off the field. But when you talk to people who have coached him or played with him, to a man they all talk about how hard he goes in practice. There's never any doubt about what he was out there to do when he steps on to a football field, for a practice or a game. He was out there to get better and to win. So congrats to Xavier. I truly believe he became a better player at Texas and I also think he matured greatly along the way. Last night was culmination of many things coming to fruition in the best way possible.13 points

Oh and for what it's worth, the protests were much more attended yesterday, and yet without the presence of DPS there was no violence or damaging disruption to campus and classes. What happened on Wednesday was abbott targeting and singling out our university to punish it for not dancing to his fascist tune enthusiastically enough. Fuck anyone who would justify that brutality with a braindead LIE about how there was rampant violence and antisemitism on campus. It's the same fucking playbook from the same scumbags (in office and on surly) as the last time there were brutal fascist takedowns of protesters13 points

I know you do. And, yes, the law can be complex, but this instance is not. The student organization provided the University a heads up of the proposed protest (which strictly speaking isn't necessary under University rules for open areas). The plan was to "occupy" the South Lawn. They passed out fliers telling folks to bring sandwiches and snacks. After occupying the lawn for the day they were going to march to the capitol. The University, and particularly Hartzell, freaked out about what was happening elsewhere (and I point out that a lot of the problems at other campuses were also administration caused) and gave a blanket no. Technically, under Texas law and University regulations, it had no authority to do that. More importantly, a blanket no to speech isn't a "reasonable, place, and manner" restriction since it amounts to an outright prohibition of the freedom to assemble. Hartzell, apparently understanding the student organization was moving forward despite his blanket no, decided the only course was to call in riot police to bust heads before the event even started. There was no violence, except by DPS. There were no threats, except by DPS. There was no destruction, except by DPS. And of the 50+ people arrested that day, including a cameraman for the news exercising a core civic right and service, all were later released and charges dropped. This was a naked trampling of the First Amendment. This was a naked abuse of authority. And Hartzell wasn't a mere observer or participant, but was rather the architect, as confirmed by his own letter and his own texts. Fuck him. Ultimately, he was afraid of a picnic. Maybe he invited the wolves to dinner not appreciating what would happen. But if that is the case, he is too incompetent and stupid to run the University anyway.12 points

Anti-Semitism has been on that trajectory since, oh, let's say around 2016, and it isn't coming from young liberals on college campuses. That form of anti-Semitism has also been very clearly about the Jewish people ("i.e., "the Jews will not replace us..."). The current protests are against the Israeli government (i.e. "Free Palestine"). The difference is incredibly easy to identify, but somehow the nazi types get free speech wherever they go, and the young liberals get shut down by the fucking gestapo. Ultimately, I just can't take anyone seriously anymore if they refer to the current events as "anti-Semitism."11 points

You continually fly into this thread with hot takes, all the while not understanding one bit what the protest at UT, which you decry for being full of entitled babies, was all about. And it might shock you that the charity you donated to had aid workers killed by Israel bombs. That's part of why people are protesting the actions of Israel. The indiscriminate killing and starvation of civilians in the quest to destroy Hamas. You express sympathy for people in harm's way but your posts suggest otherwise. The protestors want UT to divest from companies that fund, produce, or profit off the Israeli war effort. And yes, removing money is how we can force Israel to do something. We are their f'ing sugar daddy.10 points
