Finally confirmed. Now I can share this. 42 years ago my grandfather (along with two friends, a husband and wife) was executed by firing squad on the orders of a freshly appointed 21 year old city prosecutor, Ebrahim Raisi. My family is not Muslim, and my grandfather's death was ordered after he continued to refuse to convert to Islam. I was 5 years old at the time. Born/raised/living in Houston. All I remember was my dad getting the phone call and then him laying in bed for what felt like a week to me. Here is my grandfather's last will and testament, translated and slightly edited to take out family names. The Will and Testament of [redacted] In the name of God, the Almighty. My dear kind wife, my dear children, and my dear kind sons-in–law, and my dear grandchildren. Thanks be to God who has given me the strength to be steadfast in all calamities, and to remember God and all of you until my last breath. I do not have any grief, because I have walked in the path of God and truthfulness. I leave this mortal world with a happy heart. Do not grieve for my death. Trust in God. Do not cry or lament. Be happy and joyful. I am also happy that I have kind children who will not let their mother be sad. I am also satisfied and pleased with you all. To my kind wife. Mr. [redacted - my uncle] is my attorney and yours. I request him to take action as he finds it appropriate. Firstly, my house and its remaining furniture belongs to my dear wife. If they [the Authorities] return the shop, he will receive two thousand and five hundred tomans per month. I ask Mr.[redacted], kindly to manage the shop. I do not take anything with me, and I am hoping that there is no reason for the smallest of disputes. You should receive the amount of twenty thousand tomans from Mr. [redacted], who owes it to me, and register the document in his name. Finally, I have written about the rest of the matters in a separate letter. Please receive it [the money] and pay the amount of ten thousand rials as a gift to thank the revolutionary guard that will shoot me. Offer three bouquets of flowers to Mr. Sheikh Rahnama, Mr. Raisi, the prosecutor, and Mr. Hojatoleslam Haj Soltani, the Sharia Judge of the Islamic Court of Karaj, who have shown me love during this period, and pray for them. My children, [redacted - my dad and another uncle], should also send the Revolutionary Court of Karaj letters of appreciation from the United States of America. Finally, divide equally amongst yourselves whatever is left from the car, shop and other things. Take my body and bury it in Baba Salman. I say goodbye to one and all, to all my relatives, friends and family. 16 Ordibehesht 1360 [6 May 1981] [Signature] I never got to meet my grandfather. But I'm sure he would be proud of his children and grandchildren, who ended up living happy, full lives with nothing but love in their hearts.61 points

Thanks for the kind words. Adding a bit more color: - His two sons (my dad and his younger brother) were already living in the US when he died. One of my aunts and her husband were too afraid to attempt to escape Iran. They still live there but are able to visit family in the U.S. My other aunt, her husband, and two children (5 and 3 years old, my cousins) escaped the country. They travelled at night by horseback through treacherous terrain (similar to where Raisi's helicopter crashed) and were able to avoid mercenaries with help of friends and total strangers (many of them being Muslim). They got to Turkey, eventually to Spain, and after a couple of years received their visas and moved to California. - My grandfather wanted to give money and flowers to his oppressors for a couple of reasons. One, he believed living a lie was far worse than death. He of course wanted to live and be with his family, but once he realized they would never release him from prison, he preferred dying to rotting in jail and being tortured/roughed up. Secondly, he believed they were just following orders from Khomeini and did not want them to feel any guilt. That is why he thanked Raisi and Co. and showed them love when they ordered his execution. - For me, his story is a gift. I never met him and have no personal trauma as I was too young to understand what was going on. I truly feel lucky that this is part of my family background. What an incredible North Star to guide me and the principles we hold as a family and pass down to our children. - "Take my body and bury it in Baba Salman" reads tough as fuck to me. I love it.26 points

Not sure which thread to put this in, so I'll put it here. Cpl. Gage Barbieri, now 21, received the Meritorious Service Medal on Friday from Col. Damon Burrows, commanding officer of 2nd Marine Division’s Headquarters Battalion. Barbieri is only the second Marine corporal to receive the Meritorious Service Medal since at least 2008, Burrows wrote on LinkedIn. While serving as the Marine Corps’ representative to Oshkosh Defense as it revised its technical manuals for the joint light tactical vehicle, Barbieri pointed out flaws in the manuals, including one issue that could lead to rollovers. Barbieri’s engineering acumen would save more than 900,000 person-hours of maintenance production time and more than $140 million throughout the entire life cycle of the platform, the Corps calculated. “He could diagnose issues that most Marines couldn’t find and was able to make the repairs that civilian engineers from external organizations couldn’t,” said Master Sgt. Kenneth Byxbee Jr., Barbieri’s former motor transport maintenance chief, in the news release. He is set to leave the Marine Corps in June. The next step is college at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, where he plans to study mechanical engineering. He hopes of becoming a tech writer, who writes manuals himself, he said. We all know someone like this guy. They can fix ANYTHING. Pickups, refrigerators, laptops. As a future engineer, I bet he's gonna design good shit. https://www.yahoo.com/news/marine-corporal-earns-prestigious-medal-203823735.html18 points

From the Newsweek article in the thread; Newsweek.com/russia-gazprom Putin's Crown Jewel Forced Into Fire Sale Amid Record Losses Published May 09, 2024 at 7:38 AM EDT By Brendan Cole Senior News Reporter Gazprom, the energy giant at the heart of Russia's economy, has announced it is selling property in Moscow, one week after posting record losses linked to restricted supplies to Europe linked to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. The company said on Wednesday that the properties include office and non-residential buildings, a car parking lot in the capital, and the Imperial Park Hotel and spa sanatorium and resort complex in Rogozino village, just outside of Moscow. "Gazprom is engaged in a fire sale. They had their worst year in decades, and their production has fallen precipitously, down to what it was in the 1970s," said Tom O'Donnell, an energy and geopolitical analyst based in Berlin. "This is a result of a miscalculation by Putin," he told Newsweek. In announcing the real estate sale, Gazprom posted a statement on Telegram next to phone numbers for prospective purchasers. "Taking into account the completion of the relocation of the Gazprom Group companies to St. Petersburg, PJSC Gazprom is announcing its intention to sell real estate in Moscow," the statement said. Until 2023, the majority state-owned multinational energy corporation headquartered in Putin's home city, St. Petersburg, was the world's largest publicly listed natural gas company and Russia's biggest company by revenue. However, last week, Gazprom Group, which also includes oil and power businesses, posted a net loss of 629 billion rubles ($6.9 billion) for 2023, according to Bloomberg, its first loss since 1999. Core profit, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), slumped to $7.2 billion in 2023 compared with $25.1 billion in 2022, the agency said. Gazprom has restricted gas flows to Europe amid the Kremlin's retaliation for Western support of Ukraine. Decreasing gas prices due to mild weather, sluggish demand, full inventories, and Western sanctions have also hurt Russia's revenues. O'Donnell, a fellow at the Wilson Center think tank, said that before the full-scale invasion, Russia had supplied Europe with 40 percent of its gas, and Putin had been planning to make the continent more dependent on its energy export. He said that before the war, Putin had cut off gas, mostly through the Nord Stream pipelines and conduits through Belarus and Poland in what was "part of his war strategy." "It was intended to shock Europe and force them into submission with an energy war to prevent their acting in solidarity with Ukraine. To his surprise, this did not happen," O'Donnell said. Gazprom has not published its export statistics since the start of 2023 but Reuters said its calculations showed that the energy giant's natural gas supplies to Europe had slumped 55.6 percent to 28.3 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2023. Last October, Gazprom said in the first half of 2023 that gas production in the first half of 2023 had decreased by nearly a quarter (24.7 percent) which independent Russian-language news outlet Agentstvo reported was the lowest since Soviet times. From the comments in the article: Russia is going to start having massive problems with power generation. The natural gas fired steam turbines have a very short life expectancy if "minor" and "major" refits are not completed on a 3 and 5 year basis... precision bearings are replaced and drive shafts are checked at theses times as well as numerous other components. I imagine or hope these all are under sanction. If they are, "home building" replacements isn't something that's going to work on these incredibly massive and precise machines. Once these start failing and electrical grid load is transfer to an increasingly small number of them their attrition rate will go up.... and the lights will start to go out. Dozens and dozens of these rebuilds would normally happen on an annual basis in a rotating / staggered fashion. When this next winter hits and the demand is at peak I expect Russia's energy grid to be in worse shape than Ukraines. In the mid 80's, the Exxon operated Blue Water Gas Plant in Louisiana was running at 110% capacity due to record offshore production volumes. Plant owners opted to forego scheduled maintenance (48,000 hrs/5 years) on the GE Frame 5 Gas Turbines (DC 10 engines, ~ 45,000 HP), which would have reduced plant capacity by 33% for ~ 2 months, and cost of ~ $1-2 million. Later, the turbines had a major failure, that lasted 6+ months, at a cost ~ $5+ million. The turbines rotate at 4,670 RPM, driving a gas compressor that moves 350 million ft3/day. The millwrights who do this work, "known as the most highly trained workforce in every industry they serve", are not the same yahoo's Russia has building tank engines by hand. I expect Russia will run the existing equipment flat out until they don't run anymore.13 points

I went to the tournament and the gala. Kind of obligated on it and to pay for it, or part of it. It was all well done and a ton of money was raised. We’d committed to a nut for this new cycle for full roster support and exceeded that commitment. People are finally getting it. I got to meet VY last night. I don’t give a shit about celebs and such, but he’s the one guy I always wanted to meet and say thank you to, and I got to do that and take a photo. He was a terrific guy to talk to and very gracious to everyone chatting him up. I will say this - and I have been saying it all along - no one can match a motivated and unified Texas NIL function. Texas is not fully there, and not everything can or will be run through TOF, but we’re as far out there on the forefront as anyone could hope.13 points

No, I was living in St. Louis at the time. Never saw a football game of any kind until the Texas/California matchup in 1959. I sat in the very last seat of the south end of the press box at Memorial Stadium. Watched Rene Ramirez (The Galloping Gaucho) and Bobby Lackey wreck the Golden Bears 33-0. It was an overcast, rainy day and the attendance was supposedly 20,000.11 points

I started going to games about 64, I guess we I was 6. Two things always made the games good at home. One was being able to see guys down under the stands when they came out onto the field and then back in after the game. At that point the dressing rooms were under the west side bleachers and the Horns entered and exited the field around the 50 on that side. The other thing was those programs. I still have a few left somewhere, but really wish I had saved more. I also wish someone would do a collection of them online somewhere. Again, you are talking about appealing to a 6 year old. That's back in the day when every little cafe had a Cowpokes calendar at the register, and you could buy Aggie Joke books in convenience stores. Saturday mornings were sacred because that was the only time you had 3 hours of uninterrupted cartoons and seeing those program covers put Bevo on the same hero level as those heroes in the comic books. And vice versa for the anti-heroes, like the bears and owls and aggies. Very roadrunner and coyote in retrospect I guess.10 points
