My wife went upstairs to wake our kids up this morning. As she woke up our 12 year old daughter, the first thing she asked was who won the election. My wife tells her Trump did, and she started to cry. What a stomach punch. She then asked if we could move out of the country for the next 4 years. She's aware of efforts to eliminate bodily autonomy for women in our state and others, and a possible national restriction in the near future. 12 year olds shouldn't have to feel this way about a goddamned presidential election, but here we are.31 points

Can we please knock this shit off about the big, mean liberals that have been so uncool to Trump supporters? Why, because Jimmy Kimmel insults them every night? The language from the top of the GOP has been leaps and bounds more hateful than that from the DNC for decades. So are you talking us "normal" liberals who make them feel horrible? In real life, none of the liberals I know would dream about bringing up politics out of the blue. Because we're not fucking psychopaths. That shit's rude. Meanwhile, ALL of my Trump voting family/friends find all kinds of opportunities to rant about politics/conspiracies or make an unprovoked comment about trans issues. And they've all unanimously managed to completely forget how social cues work. I can't go to a beach, lake, camping, or off-roading with my kids without seeing Fuck Joe Biden and Joe and the Ho flags and shirts near us. It's all so god-damned hypocritical.30 points

Let me get this straight: Americans were fed up with the increase in food prices, so they voted for the candidate who vowed to deport 50% or more of the farm workforce. Good job, hope it works out for you!22 points

You don’t think Ken Paxton threatening to prosecute doctors performing emergency abortions doesn’t have an impact on what doctors are willing to do. You live in fucking Fantasy Land.21 points

A lot of them are having a hard time finding their place in the world. The good paying jobs are not good enough to payoff student debt, a mortgage, or start a family. The job market is also incredibly dehumanizing. You have to chain yourself to a shitty job just to get decent healthcare. It not great when you wake up realizing your labor has been mostly to payoff banks instead of building wealth like the previous generations did by pulling up the bootstraps. There’s a sad hopelessness that the American dream is forever out of reach for young men and it would take a strongman sent by god to correct course. A decent education is also becoming increasingly unaffordable and possibly useless in the economy ahead.21 points

People loathe the democrats because they’re the party expected to be the adults in the room, so when things go wrong it’s obviously their fault. Trump is about to have the Senate, House, and a popular vote mandate yet he will still blame Democrats anytime anything bad happens, and everyone in this thread currently lecturing the Democrats about personal responsibility will go along with it.21 points

I woke up and told my wife we would make more money, have more fun, put our phones down, put our phones down, find another charity, take a walk, find another sport to play, find another hobby, take a hike, etc. etc. we have a lot to be thankful for and we will find our way. our purpose is in our work, our family, my kids, our relationship and helping others.20 points

Joe Biden delayed what now seems inevitable. The American people did this to themselves. Trump didn't force anyone to vote for him. America isn't a monolith, but it has lacked accountability and strong moral direction for a significant portion of my life. This is a sign of an eroded society incapable of accountability or collective goodwill. The American you live in isn't changing, the feeling you feel now is what brisket has been talking about. Trump is a symptom, he's not the disease. The American population is sick (unhealthy) and a lot of people thought defeating Trump in this election would turn the page and put things on the mend. After tonights result, even if a few hundred thousand people switched their votes and the outcome was different I don't believe for one second that it would heal America. There's something deeply wrong with a large majority of the country.20 points

Those who are saying this election is not that big of a deal are missing the big picture. Last night we learned two deeply concerning lessons. The first is that the American public is way more susceptible to disinformation than anyone realized. They elected a traitor (stolen docs), grifter, felon, sexual assaulter, pedophile, serial liar, crook, and moron. The gullibility of the American public is unbelievable. The stupidity of the American public is epic. And that is frightening for the future. Second, the message of hate resonated with way more people than folks would ever have guessed. Americans hold way more hatred, racism, sexism and misogyny than anyone realized. This will have implications for decades. This election wasn’t about four years. It was a realization that the American experiment is truly at risk because of the flaws of its own citizens. With disinformation being unstoppable, there is now a path to a dystopian future filled with suffering, control, grift, corruption, and out of control wealth inequality. The fundamental tenant of a fair opportunity for Americans could be an ideal of the past until or if Americans figure out a way to deal with disinformation and recognize within themselves their own personal failings.19 points

This was a complete domination. Republicans have the house, senate, courts and executive in a popular vote. That means more people around you want this. If you don't like what that means that's a you problem. Stop blaming everyone else for how they voted. You have a problem with everyone around yourself. Solve that problem or don't. A lot of people in here are pearl clutching and all talk. If you don't like it, turn off the government's revenue and quit your job working for whoever. If you want to show them how ruined the economy is under Trump ruin the economy around yourself first. If you are truly principled and have courage to fight for what you believe make a plan now on how you will be a part of the peaceful revolution and do it when Trump is president. Brain drain, lack of workers to do work, industrial collapse and stagnation are all things that are possible if everyone decided they've had enough without bloodshed that force a hard reset. There is no soft landing that includes an America that still has Billionaires that are so rich they make other billionaires look poor. All you have to do is be willing to give up everything to build it all back after the revolution. The reality is none of you have had enough to get to this point. There are posters here who lament billionaires, policies that support incingruent behavior with their beliefs and yet still take their paycheck every month from companies and the people that run them that ARE THE FUCKING PROBLEM. You all praise the same capitalist principles and when faced with the reality of personal sacrifice or economic impact everyone is doing the same thing, just working and trying to say your work doesn't contribute to the problem why shouldn't you be able to make money. YOU ARE ENTITLES TO YOUR AMERICAN LIFESTYLE. This is what happens to people when nothing is more important than money. You lose the ability of accountability because you are desperately attached in a symbiotic relationship with the American Rot Economy. I've put my money where my mouth is. I left a job that paid an obscene amount of money in industry to forge a path for myself based on principles I believe in and actually giving a shit about moving the economy, technology and people forward and upward instead of just grifting and accepting my share of the ransack. You know what I've found since? That no one cares, no one believes in American Innovation anymore, no one believes in doing the right thing because it's too hard. Its a lot easier to just shut the fuck up, and do what the bosses tell you even though you know it adds no value or is damaging to your customers or the broader economy. Ive found that greed and equity markets are at all time highs. The American Consumer is addicted to its debt fueled spending mania. The real reason things are the way they are is peoples addiction to late stage rot economy. You don't need a visionary leader to live that kind of life. A strong majority of people on this site can't even be bothered to pay for it. I pour immense amounts of time, money and effort into community building, yet the community insists on destroying itself. What's the point?18 points

On one hand, it’s hard to fathom what happened. All these stories of women outpacing men, first time voters, blah blah blah. It meant absolutely fucking nothing in the end. How did this happen? I guess we made too many assumptions about where those votes were going. But it still does t make sense. On the other hand, it all makes sense. Inflation and the average American’s understanding of it was at the forefront throughout Biden’s presidency. What could he have done differently. Use the Clinton “I feel your pain”? Would that have made a difference? If there was a magic deflation button on the Resolute Desk, I’m sure he would have pressed it. So much to dig through. My husband is devastated, as am I. But I told him what can we do? Like I said last night. Live our lives and prepare for the what may be coming. I told him we’re going to need each other. I remember trying to be hopeful in 2016 because, again, what are our options. I couldn’t have imagined how bad it actually turned out. I’m afraid it’ll be worse this time18 points

2016 was easy to see as a fluke, as a large minority of the country that hated Hillary shrugging and taking a chance on her goofball opponent and happening to win thanks to the electoral college. That wasn’t this. This was him openly running as a fascist, with everyone who restrained him last time warning us about the danger he posed, and a solid majority of the country eagerly voting for fascism. And the worst thing is that we don’t have the excuse of a horrific depression like Germany did. A majority of voting Americans are just monsters.18 points

I sincerely hope if he wins that everyone who voted for him will be targeted with the worst thing that is possible to happen to them. Fuck this country for voting for a dictator on day one. Feel the pain bitches18 points

I couldn't chime in earlier, but I'm so fucking sick of the whole "well, if the democrats were just nicer and didn't talk down to people, blah blah." Total bullshit coming from the party of people that willingly voted for a guy who made fun of a handicapped journalist live on national television. This right here, all the way back in 2015, should have been the fucking end of it. The GOP has spent the better part of a decade dehumanizing anyone who doesn't toe the line. Crooked Hillary, Let's Go Brandon, Lyin' Kamala ... these came not from local activist agitators but direct from the mouth (er, fingertips) of the guy you just put in office. So kindly fuck off with your "democrats are the mean ones." Even if we cowtowed ALL THE WAY OVER and put the backs of our heads on the pavement, you assholes would find something else to fight about. Because you aren't negotiating in good faith basically ever. Every accusation is an admission; the soul of the GOP can't comprehend legitmate compromise, empathy, a desire to actually help folks who might disagree with them, and so they just assume everyone else feels the same way. He's not going to reach across the aisle because he doesn't know how, and he doesn't care to learn. HIs goal isn't compromise, his goal isn't noble, his goal isn't helping those less fortunate. I don't particularly know what his goal IS, other than chaos and personal enrichment, but along the way he's putting people in positions of power with very clear goals that will serve to hurt people. Fuck you and your both-sides bullshit. It's never in good faith, and it never has been.17 points

It has been a weird day. We live in a Republican locked area, it’s as red as it gets and people are actually celebrating. All I hear from clients and people around me is positivity and excitement. We are not political. People know my stance, but I’m not talking about it all day. My two daughters are distraught today. One is looking at countries that might be worth going to school in and the other is talking about changing majors because she doesn’t see a future in public policy as a women. I guess that means we raised them right from a moral perspective, but it’s still a hard lesson for them in how shitty people really are.16 points

It’s fun to self-flagellate here and agonize over whether too many feelings are hurt I guess. It is the only thing the center-left can do. It’s notable that the party that won is completely devoid of introspection or empathy. Can we stop pretending like this was some kind of policy election or adjudication of democratic economic policies. The winning candidate provided stream of conscience gibberish that revolved entirely around petty personal beefs and conspiratorial vibes. One could not be more calculating with appeal to the stupid and angry among us, and it landed precisely with that segment of the population. I am sorry that it is true, but it is: Trump supporters are stupid or bad, there isn’t another choice. The messaging problem is precisely a failure among the center-left to construct a compelling narrative of villains and idiots and to convince people they they were neither idiots or evil. We have an entire right-wing hate machine dedicated to rabidly tearing down democratic leaders (small-d) and attacking our democratic system; and we have a centrist professional media establishment dedicated to doing the same thing but coolly and analytically.16 points

How the election went at my house- My daughter was playing their first playoff game(volleyball). So my wife's well off parents came to town to watch her play. Her dad is a "the tv is always on Fox" kind of guy. My kid's team won their game in straight sets. On the drive home this dude is looking at maps on his phone. Glancing over I can see that it doesn't look good for the good guys. Now I am in a bad mood but I am trying just not to talk so I don't lash out at anyone. We get home and eat something and I find a reason to turn in. My wife, also trying to avoid political talk, comes with. I break the news to her that Harris is going to lose and she gets extremely upset. Not having anyone to take our frustrations out on we end up lashing out at each other. This morning I decide to leave before anyone is awake. Later on my wife calls me and told me that her and her mom got into it. My wife attacked her about voting for Trump(they live in Zona) and how now our Type 1 diabetic daughter's life may be in jeopardy. My daughter comes down, hears the news, and starts crying profusely, saying she doesn't want to go to school(kids at school know she is a liberal). My MIL is caught off guard by how upset my daughter got. My wife goes over some policies in Texas that they didn't know about. They were stunned. Too late. So now we are going to have a household meeting about our Texas exit strategy. My kid is headed to a blue state to play college volleyball and we are selling and leaving too. This might seem like hyperbole to some but if Jews had gotten out while they could...... We see the trend of people moving here because "screw the libs" from moderate to liberal states. Texas is going to get redder and redder so time to find our tribe and bunker up.15 points

One thing I don't accept as a joke is accusations of taking the NIL money and using it for myself or any personal gain. I'm happy to show you all the books and the contracts and everything I have done above and beyond with regard to NIL. I heavily subsidize the program. It costs me more than season tickets for a BMD per year personally. Stop fucking around with me on this topic it's off limits and it's not funny15 points

For us olds, imagine only having dating apps as a realistic possibility to date someone (post HS/college) and the understandable frustration that would come with that. And all the Instagram bullshit that poisons all of their minds. It won't happen, but there needs to be an intentional decision by society to turn back the clock and force social activities back into people's lives again. The phones are killing us.15 points

I really don't want to participate in this thread - or any others - very much. BUT, I do think it's important to do something before he takes power: create a scorecard. And I invite Trump supporters to contribute to this scorecard. It is a list of things that Trump says he will do, or will not do. For example: Will not do: 1) Implement Project 2025 plans, because "he's never heard of it." Will do: 1) Mass deportation, on day one, of all people here illegally, and many here legally. 2) Bring prices down on everything. 3) "End the war in Ukraine in 24 hours." 4) Protect women. 5) Leave abortion to the states. There's plenty more. Just stuff he actually said he will/won't do. Then, let's keep score, shall we? Building the scorecard today eliminates any fudging or revisionism later. Those of you who voted for him, I presume that you expect him to follow through on his promises, right? So this not only shouldn't bother you, it should excite you. Finally, a leader who will follow through on his promises, no more bullshit. So, add to this, then we'll make a master list and maybe sticky it somewhere. To watch over the next four years.15 points

Thanks guys for keeping this thread tight. Those of us that don’t participate with news should continue to lurk. A lot of moving parts let’s hope the good guys closest to this conflict and their neighbors step up. A stronger pro-Democracy Europe is good for all of us.15 points

I will say one thing. I hope every fucking young man who pulled the lever for DJT has his brain melted by the male loneliness epidemic. I hope they all spend the rest of their twenties in a vape and Monster induced stupor surrounded by other fucking groypers and incels. I hope they never feel a woman’s touch or even a smile, I hope they grow old and wither away feeling like no one ever loved them. I will do my damndest to make sure my daughters do their bit in all that.15 points

Something I have thought for a long time, which seems to only have accelerated, is that a huge part of the American electorate wants an impossible outcome. Which in and of itself is not so surprising as it's somewhat human nature, but this in particular is a weird sort of ennui and meaninglessness that has been brewing since the 90s. We are the most cosseted and comfortable people ever to grace planet earth, and it isn't enough. By any metric, everyone from the poorest to the richest in this country has a better standard of life than they did 30 years ago, and it's not even close (people living in a cardboard bow maybe excluded). And yet we are as divided and angry as at any point since the 19th century. There is a just a purposelessness for a great swath of society that I don't see any cure for.15 points

I can't sleep. Not because of what I expect to happen to my wife and me, but what a country we're leaving for my children. My daughter moved to Oregon to get out of the misogynistic hell that is Texas so that she has access to sane medical care. Now where will she go? The economy that trump proposals will bring will prevent both she and my son from ever being able to do more than get by. I have gay and trans family members who will now be subject to government harassment without protection. I served in the Marine Corps to try to ensure that our country would be fair and free, just to see the electorate throw that all away. Damn it all to hell.15 points

Fuck you you fucking piece of shit. I have cancer. The pills I take to keep me alive cost $30,000 a month on the best and most expensive possible insurance that exists. Republicans have actively worked against my healthcare for three decades. Their policy made it impossible for me to buy health insurance on the free market. They actively campaigned against it. Now we’re gonna have brainworms in charge of healthcare. I’ve been a type 1 diabetic since I was 17. I’m genuinely concerned about how these stupid fucksticks are gonna fuck with my healthcare. My concerns are not “mental illness”.14 points

For example, last time Trump was in office, Stephen Miller was pushing a program to challenge the citizenship of Americans born in border hospitals in the 30s-40s. The reasoning was "well, records were sketchy back then, and hospital birth certificates can't be trusted." Cool. That applies to....my father. Who was born in a border hospital, and the only proof of that is his hospital birth certificate. To be clear, Stephen Miller wants to deport my US citizen father, because he doesn't think my dad can prove he's American enough. Yeah, y'all can burn in hell.14 points

A few thoughts. The Dems "Big Tent" gives them a broad and diverse voting base, but it's clear that loudly progressing the platform of every demographic within that base does not resonate with those outside the tent. I thought it was absurd that the only ads Ted Cruz ran were about trans bullshit and "men playing in women's sports". I thought, "there's no way people really give a shit about this, right?" But boy was I wrong. They polled prospective voters and those voters said "we're tired of this shit." They knew what they were doing, and it worked. Identity Politics is a losing game. The path forward to protect and expand the rights for marginalized groups will probably require first obtaining a political mandate by gaining the public's trust on handling the meat-and-potatoes issues that do resonate with the broader electorate, and then passing legislation enshrining those rights for marginalized groups, even if the general public isn't necessarily comfortable with it. Dems need to stick to the meat and potatoes issues that resonate with voters and tune out the social issues that give middle America the ick. Jobs, economy, diplomacy. It sucks, but it's true. My very real concerns about Trump's legislative and personal-retribution agenda are somewhat mitigated by the fact that he's too fucking lazy to do any real work, although spite is a great motivator. My concerns is who will be the person(s) setting and executing the legislative agenda. Donald Trump is not a fascist because of his political philosophy. Donald Trump has no philosophy. He's a political nihilist. (I mean, say what you will about the tenets of national socialism. At least it's an ethos) He will support anything that he believes is popular and will get people to vote for him. He's the very definition of a puppet. The question then becomes, who is he going to let put their hand up his ass and make him dance? But he is a fascist in the sense that he believes the presidency gives him absolute authority. And his stacking of the Supreme Court and their ruling that the executive office is immune to prosecution only reaffirms that belief. How motivated will be to go after his enemies, and what will that look like? I truly don't know. I'm also very nervous about diplomacy. This man is so unstable. It's terrifying that he could literally order a nuclear attack at any time. Also, hey Ukraine - you're fucked. You should probably start walking west if you live there. As a straight white man, I try to reflect upon, appreciate and understand the incredible privilege with which I've been blessed. My life wasn't dramatically impacted by the first Trump presidency. And if my daughter were to need access to exercise what I believe is her right to get an abortion, we have the means to facilitate that. But I do feel for marginalized groups that will be affected by those setting the legislative agenda. Buckle up buttercup. It's gonna be a terrible fucking ride. It'll be like when those people boarded an architectural boat tour in Chicago on August 8th 2004 only to have Dave Matthews Band's tour bus dump 800 pounds of human waste all over them as the bus passed over the Kinzie Street bridge.14 points

As others have said, this is pretty hypocritical, yes? I don't think you want to do a comparison between what Trump said about Kamala and her supporters and what she said about him and his during this campaign. Why is it that Republicans--especially since Trump--can essentially say the most heinous things imaginable with no repercussions, but one insult by a Democrat and it's "they need to tone down the rhetoric! Stop calling us names!" I honestly don't have a good answer for this. Maybe you do.14 points

I will fall to my knees in gratitude. Dead serious. Shit, I heard a snippet of his remarks last night, and he mentioned that we need to heal. If he makes ANY meaningful effort at trying to heal the toxic, destructive (and I believe fatal) division in this country, I will be incredibly grateful. I will always think he is a horrible, broken, shitty human. But someone like that can be capable of doing good things, whether accidentally or on purpose, I don't much care. And don't get me wrong, I have NO hope that he will do much of anything good, and even a few small things that may be good will be vastly outweighed by the pain and suffering he will cause. But if he does X thing that's good, I'm more than happy to acknowledge it. I'm sure there are some serial killers out there who are really nice neighbors and are considerate and don't park their car in the street to block their neighbor's driveway and such. That's nice. It doesn't make up for the fact that he's a serial killer, but at least he's a decent neighbor. But knowing him and his character.....yeah, wish in one hand and shit in the other.13 points

I don't know man. When so many of the ads were just straight up transphobic shit and panic over immigrants and that worked it is hard to think well of my fellow countrymen and women. But hey I am not running for office. What is the lesson? If you know pass it on to people who are. I thought we needed to be more pro-union, bring in more jobs, stop busting pot users, build infrastructure, and all that. But clearly not. So what do I know? I clearly don't know shit. No Democratic politicians should be listening me.13 points

But it could be that simple. The average American actually doesn't know anything about the economy. They are woefully misinformed about how our government actually works, and a vast majority of them have never stepped foot outside this country, so have no concept of the larger world. We have an illinformed electorate and this is the result.13 points
