  9. CJ Vogel The Longhorns and Sun Devils spoke with the media this morning to begin the Peach Bowl week of festivities in Atlanta. A couple of takeaways from the media availability time. *** – First, the entire Texas team made the quick trip over to the College Football Hall of Fame – including Lance Jackson, Michael Terry III, Justus Terry and new portal addition DL Cole Brevard from Purdue. The Longhorns will practice inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 12:45 ET. – Speaking some with Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt, it is easy to see where his swagger comes from. Leavitt exudes confidence and combines that with an always counted out chip on his shoulder. "I was just answering the comment to my fullest belief," Leavitt says. "I hope that every player on the field feels that they are the best. That is how it should be. You put all of this work in to get to this stage, so why would you not believe that yourself." For whatever the reason, Leavitt was only available for about the first 10 minutes of the hour allotted to Arizona State. I do not know if there was an additional television responsibility or if ASU was just looking to hide him a bit. For what it is worth, Ewers and Manning each spent the full hour on the floor taking questions. – Talking to Texas QB Quinn Ewers, he says the biggest thing he took away from the first trip to Atlanta was learning and growing more as a quarterback. Said you can't teach experience, you can only add it by learning firsthand. Ewers also spoke about QB Trey Owens coming along in his freshman season. – The belief is that WR Isaiah Bond will be completely ready for this game on Wednesday. Bond practiced with the team on Friday before the Longhorns departed from Austin. Bond says he is "feeling great and expects to play on Wednesday," vs. Arizona State. – I spoke some with OT Trevor Goosby who mentioned the learning curve of playing Mykel Williams, Jalon Walker, Shemar Turner and Shemar Stewart in his first real action that helped him get ready for extended snaps. Goosby says he prepares each week as though he will be starting and this week is no different, especially with RT Cam Williams questionable at the moment with a knee injury. – Texas DL coach Kenny Baker spoke very highly of his incoming group of linemen – Justus Terry, Josiah Sharma and Myron Charles. Baker says the Longhorns being able to fend off Florida for the signature of Charles was a big win for him and the Texas staff. Coach Baker told me one of the biggest reasons for the defensive line room playing at the level it is the buy in from Alfred Collins early on in his tenure. Baker mentioned Collins is a guy who is very well-respected in the locker room and once he was on board, the rest of the group followed quickly. – I tell ya what, there isn't enough time to speak about the words Tashard Choice has for RB Tre Wisner. There was a lot of praise for the humility and team-first approach of Wisner. Choice spoke about Wisner's vision and ability to get better as games progress. Choice says Wisner came in to Texas weighing 177 pounds. Wisner will play in the Peach Bowl at 202 pounds and Choice hopes he is able to get to 210 by the beginning of next season.

  10. tl;dr The 12 team playoff is awesome. The problem is the consolidation into oversized conferences purely for money. If they had instituted the 12-team playoff 25 years ago the money would be absurd at this point and college football wouldn't have these stupid megaconferences. Get off my lawn.

  11. So catching up on this thread... I actually agree with Elon and Vivek in the sense that we should be offering work visas to the best and brightest. Then again I'm biased because I came to the US on a F-1 (student visa), was recruited and got a H-1B > green card > citizen, yada yada. Was I the best and brightest best in my class? Probably not, but definitely in the top 10%. Looking back, I got lucky because in the mid 90s, everyone was going for an EE, CS or MIS degree and there was a death of civil engineers. From several economic podcasts, there are a lot of fucking brilliant foreign students doing PhD level research in the US that are looking to move to Europe because they don't think they'll get a H-1B visa. Retain the best to keep the US at the forefront of scientific research. Let the MAGA prom queens serve you wings at Hooters.

  17. Went through this exercise finally. As I've said elsewhere the 12 team setup is perfect, the problem is the stupid oversized conferences. If we had the 12-team playoff 25 years ago everything would be great. Here are some past seasons using the 12-team playoff setup and final BCS rankings. I am going to show each season with the current guarantees then each season with my proposed solution of guaranteeing the top 4 conference champions Top 8 seeds (so either a bye or home game) instead of Top 4. I am going to focus on seasons relevant for Texas because I'm wasting my time doing this, wasting your time reading it is your decision (conference champs in bold): 2000 Holy shit yes in 2000 we make a 12-team playoff after getting skullfucked 63-14 by Oklahoma. Current guarantees: #1 Oklahoma versus winner of #9 Kansas State @ #8 Nebraska #4 Washington versus winner of #12 Texas at #5 Virginia Tech #2 Florida St. versus winner of #10 Oregon at #7 Florida #3 Miami (FL) versus winner of #11 Notre Dame at #6 Oregon State Changed guarantees: no change, #1-4 in rankings were conference champions. Summary - Big Ten left completely out as Purdue was the 6th rated conference champion and were outside the Top 12. This playoff kicks ass as all of these will because the conferences were still split up so we get awesome interregional matchups for the first time and guaranteeing the top 5 conference champions something makes more sense when there are more conferences. 2001 Current guarantees: #1 Miami (FL) versus winner of #9 Stanford @ #8 Texas #4 Illinois versus winner of #12 Washington St. at #5 Nebraska #2 Colorado versus winner of #10 Maryland at #7 Tennessee #3 Oregon versus winner of #11 Oklahoma at #6 Florida Changed guarantees: #1 Miami (FL) versus winner of #9 Stanford @ #8 Illinois #4 Oregon versus winner of #12 Washington St. at #5 Florida #2 Nebraska versus winner of #10 Maryland at #7 Texas #3 Colorado versus winner of #11 Oklahoma at #6 Tennessee Summary - Surprise SEC championship game winner LSU is left out of the playoff as they were 13th in the BCS. First controversy but try not losing 3 games. Sound familiar? Current setup gives Illinois a bye, my proposal replaces that with a much stronger Nebraska team. 2002 Current guarantees: #1 Miami (FL) versus winner of #9 Notre Dame @ #8 Kansas St. #4 Washington St. versus winner of #12 Penn St. at #5 Southern Cal #2 Ohio St. versus winner of #10 Texas at #7 Oklahoma (!!!) #3 Georgia versus winner of #11 Michigan at #6 Iowa Changed guarantees: #1 Miami (FL) versus winner of #9 Notre Dame @ #8 Kansas St. #4 Southern Cal versus winner of #12 Penn St. at #5 Iowa #2 Ohio St. versus winner of #10 Texas at #7 Oklahoma (!!!) #3 Georgia versus winner of #11 Michigan at #6 Washington St. Summary - Texas playing in Norman in either setup. Florida State misses as ACC champion, but hello they were 9-4. 2003 Current guarantees: #1 LSU versus winner of #9 Miami (FL) @ #8 Tennessee #4 Florida St. versus winner of #12 Georgia at #5 Oklahoma #2 Southern Cal versus winner of #10 Kansas St. at #7 Texas #3 Michigan versus winner of #11 Miami (OH) at #6 Ohio St. Changed guarantees: #1 Oklahoma versus winner of #9 Miami (FL) @ #8 Tennessee #4 Michigan versus winner of #12 Georgia at #5 Ohio St. #2 LSU versus winner of #10 Kansas St. at #7 Florida St. #3 Southern Cal versus winner of #11 Miami (OH) at #6 Texas Summary - MACtion in the playoff! Roethlisberger in Columbus in the current setup but visits Austin in the proposed setup. This is the first really good one showing the wisdom of guaranteeing top 8 instead of top 4 for the 4 top ranked conference champions. 2004 Current guarantees: #1 Southern Cal versus winner of #9 Boise St. @ #8 Virginia Tech #4 Utah versus winner of #12 Iowa at #5 Texas #2 Oklahoma versus winner of #10 Louisville at #7 Georgia #3 Auburn versus winner of #11 LSU at #6 California Changed guarantees: #1 Southern Cal versus winner of #9 Boise St. @ #8 Virginia Tech #4 Texas versus winner of #12 Iowa at #5 California #2 Oklahoma versus winner of #10 Louisville at #7 Georgia #3 Auburn versus winner of #11 LSU at #6 Utah Summary - 8 conference champions in the playoff! What a great one this would have been instead of having only that asskicking Southern Cal gave Oklahoma. Proposed setup would have let Aaron Rodgers run his mouth directly to Mack Brown in a quarterfinal if they beat Iowa. 2005 Current guarantees: #1 Southern Cal versus winner of #9 Auburn @ #8 Miami (FL) #4 Georgia versus winner of #12 LSU at #5 Ohio St. #2 Texas versus winner of #10 Virginia Tech at #7 Notre Dame #3 Penn St. versus winner of #11 West Virginia at #6 Oregon Changed guarantees: #1 Southern Cal versus winner of #9 Auburn @ #8 Miami (FL) #4 Ohio St. versus winner of #12 LSU at #5 Oregon #2 Texas versus winner of #10 Virginia Tech at #7 Georgia #3 Penn St. versus winner of #11 West Virginia at #6 Notre Dame Summary - While this playoff was obviously completely unnecessary, I made the Big Ten declare a champion between their co-champions and in my revised history they were smart and just went with the higher ranked team in the BCS. 2006 and 2007 - Skipped because who cares 2008 Current guarantees: #1 Oklahoma versus winner of #9 Boise St. @ #8 Penn St. #4 Utah versus winner of #12 Cincinnati at #5 Texas #2 Florida versus winner of #10 Ohio St. at #7 Texas Tech #3 Southern Cal versus winner of #11 TCU at #6 Alabama Changed guarantees: #1 Oklahoma versus winner of #9 Boise St. @ #8 Penn St. #4 Alabama versus winner of #12 Cincinnati at #5 Southern Cal #2 Florida versus winner of #10 Ohio St. at #7 Texas Tech #3 Texas versus winner of #11 TCU at #6 Utah Summary - Same thing as 2005 with Big Ten co-champions. Would have been great a great playoff again with eight conference champions. 2009 Current guarantees: #1 Alabama versus winner of #9 Georgia Tech @ #8 Ohio St. #4 TCU versus winner of #12 LSU at #5 Florida #2 Texas versus winner of #10 Iowa at #7 Oregon #3 Cincinnati versus winner of #11 Virginia Tech at #6 Boise St. Changed guarantees: no change, #1-4 in rankings were conference champions. Summary - Another 8 conference champ playoff, and another awesome college football spectacle it would have been.

  19. Even if Mack is β€œtheoretically” right about how it’s unfair not to have an NIL salary cap to create parity, why is he whining about it and making it an issue like he’s Jeff Traylor at UTSA who can’t compete? This is Texas. Don’t fuck our shit up by using our own media outlets like OTF to whine about disparity when the current NIL playing field is clearly to our advantage right now. Go whine about NIL at some G5 school like a Karen and quit using Texas athletics as your soapbox to bitch about NIL to the media. Clearly Mack is on a crusade against NIL because he thinks it’s the reason he sucked ass at UNC and not because of his shitty coaching. Mack is only hurting us by bringing this issue into the spotlight using guys like OTF to give his voice a platform.

  20. Chat GPT, why is the Quinn Ewers quarterback thread on the surlyhorns.com blog so contentious and do you have any suggestions on how we can improve the toxic interactions? The Quinn Ewers quarterback thread on SurlyHorns.com has become contentious due to several factors: High Expectations and Performance Scrutiny: As the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, Quinn Ewers is under intense scrutiny. Fans' high expectations can lead to critical discussions, especially following losses or perceived underperformance. Diverse Fan Opinions: Sports forums attract fans with varying perspectives. Disagreements over Ewers' performance, leadership, and future with the team can escalate into heated debates. Anonymous Posting: The anonymity of online forums can embolden individuals to express opinions more bluntly or aggressively than they might in person, contributing to a toxic environment. To improve interactions within the thread, consider the following strategies: Promote Constructive Dialogue: Encourage users to share opinions respectfully and focus on evidence-based discussions rather than personal attacks. Implement Moderation Tools: Utilize moderators to monitor discussions, address violations promptly, and maintain a positive environment. Encourage Empathy: Remind users that players are human and that constructive criticism is more beneficial than harsh negativity. By fostering a respectful and supportive community, the quality of discussions can improve, leading to more meaningful and less contentious interactions.

  21. It's funny how when Mack returned to UNC, the narrative was, "we love it so much, Sally is from here, we've always wanted to come back and retire here..." yadda yadda. Mack spends five years there accomplishing nothing of note, gets pushed out the door for Belichik, and immediately leaves the state. On brand.

  28. So I've been making a holiday tour to visit various relatives in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and North Texas. In Oklahoma, staying at an aunt's, and had a decent-sized gathering, (around 35 people), and one of the dishes was chicken and I jokingly asked if it was safe - they had just killed something like 100,000 chickens within a county or two of where we are staying and it was still in the news. Perhaps I shouldn't have joked about it given the economic impact and that some relatives were in agriculture. On top of that, OU had just imploded against Navy, so I was not a popular person. One of my cousins pointed at me and said "no matter what happens with this bird flu stuff, I'm not going to participate in your pandemic" and my dumbass response was something about "is that like OU deciding not to participate in the SEC?"
