  4. Nope. i just tried to get back to our house this morning and they have a hard closure just south of us. No residents allowed in. Apparently there were looters in our neighborhood last night. My next door neighbor confronted a van and asked if they lived there and they said no, they were just checking it out. He said they better check it out somewhere else and they left. But hearing reports of peoples homes being robbed. The only justice for that bullshit is swift execution. If you are caught with stolen property, immediate death.

  5. Spent the last few hours driving around picking up supplies, dropping them off at local churches that are bringing up donations. We’ve got U-Haul’s full of stuff heading up to Pasadena area and all the evacuation shelters everything from board games to pillows, charging cables, clothing, things that these people are gonna be without for the next few months.

  8. Oh, and just one more thing before I shut up for a while, re: the dry hydrants. Just working large structure fires like, for example, an apartment fire with a whole building or multiple buildings involved, you can have water supply issues if you have too many hydrants flowing in that area. In very general terms, the more hydrants you open up, the less volume and pressure you'll end up with on each hydrant. Now imagine maybe hundreds or maybe even thousands of hydrants opened up all over the place over a broader area, with numerous firefighting agencies all working with them at the same time, literal chaos as you try to chase current fires and new fires popping up all over the place, triaging the fires so as not to waste resources on lost causes, trying to make sure everyone is out and evacuating and at the same time rescuing those who need it, dispatch absolutely swamped with radio and telephone traffic, not enough radio channels so they're all jammed with radio traffic making it very difficult for even the most basic comms, etc ... I don't envy those folks at all. They're going through the wringer.

  12. I think I mentioned that when there were fires in San Diego many years ago, I took several days off at work and evacuated horses all over the county (had a truck and horse trailer, which was also used to haul beer to the old hornfans tailgates). A few of our horse friends did the same, and we all went caravan style. A local tack and feed store became central dispatch. The TV news and radio would tell people that needed help to "call Mary's", and once we were done with a run, we too called Mary's, and got the next assignment. The horses were hauled to the Del Mar race track, where volunteers on the ground would take the horses from us, get them in stalls with feed and water, etc. There we many times when I didn't know who's horse I had in the trailer...in those cases I'd tell the ground crew where I'd picked up the horses, and they would note it. After a few days, it calmed down considerably, and, upon arrival and unloading at Del Mar, Mary's told us that there were no other evacs needed at that time. So, we took a well-deserved breather, and somebody; a grateful horse owner IIRC, produced a cooler full of beer. So, we were just sipping our beers, and I walked along the stalls checking out some of the horses. The ground crew would use tape to mark the stall with the horse's name and place of origin, and "unknown" on the stalls of the strays. Anyway, we're walking along the stalls, the wife is feeding each horse a carrot, and I'm calling them by name and saying hello to them. Usual horse-type names..."Hello Billy Bob"..."Hello Bandit"..."Hello Charlie Brown". And then I come to a stall where the horse isn't hanging his head out. The tape on the stall reads "Emu". Hmmm. That's a funny name for a horse. So, in the fog of my exhaustion, I stick my head in the stall saying "where are you Emu" and of course, IT'S A FUCKING EMU ABOUT TO PECK MY FUCKING EYEBALL OUT. Scared the shit out of me but I avoided injury. Fox 32 is absolutely not a So Cal station. Fox is 11 in L.A.

  13. If these dipshits really thought that they ever lived in a world in which the University of fucking Texas couldn’t join any conference it damn well pleased, then that’s 100% on them. They act like it’s a kids’ best friends club. Grow the fuck up, yokels.

  14. An important note for this game for those who didn't read Connelly's preview "Perhaps most importantly, will Texas be able to get off the field on third downs? Despite the receiver talent, Ohio State converts just 23.3% of its third-and-longs (7 or more yards to go), 85th nationally. Texas allows just a 15.2% conversion rate on third-and-longs (sixth). Five of Howard's nine interceptions have come on third down as well. It's hard to push Ohio State behind schedule, but when it happens you must take full advantage." Get Howard to 3rd and 7+

  16. Depending on the carrier, they'll likely just say we can't afford the claims at a certain point and declare insolvency. If they're admitted carriers, they're backed by a state fund that promises to pay claims. It will take forever to get everybody paid and it will not be pleasant. Depending on the exposure of a carrier like State Farm, I don't know what we're looking at. Much of what is burning now is high-end stuff. The luxury carriers have really dialed-back capacity substantially in the last five years but they're still on a lot of high-end residences in SoCal. I'd be shocked to see any kind of government bailout beyond what is guaranteed by any state fund. The carriers themselves will be insolvent. Just about all of this. AIG basically pulled out of California entirely. They were WAY over-exposed in CA. The company said it needed to take like a 60% rate increase in one year just to get their heads above water but couldn't. By the time they got that 60% over nine or so years, they'd be even further behind than before. So they said fuck it, we're out. Looking like a smart decision tonight. The FAIR plan is all some of the properties can get. There are limits. My understanding is that the state guarantees to pay all claims no matter what. But, residential properties are limited to $3M per location (not sure if that's for the dwelling or if that's TIV for one residence -- dwelling, personal property, other structures, etc). I worked on two opportunities for primary-Dallas residents this past fall. They both own homes in Montecito/Santa Barbara, which has been basically uninsurable for anything other than the FAIR plan. One property we quoted at $15M for dwelling and that was probably shooting pretty low. Quoted the first guy's annual premium with Chubb Custom's special carve-out capacity reserved for our firm alone was like $225K or something with a $500K wildfire deductible ($10K for all other perils including fire that starts within the confines of the home). Not sure what his FAIR plan premium was but it wasn't anywhere close to that. This guy is a billionaire several times over and somebody many on here would recognize. We pared things down -- cut the personal property entirely and increased deductibles and got the annual premium down to $175K-ish but he still didn't want it. If his house burns down, it's a rounding error in his portfolio so he passed. He'll still own the dirt but at some point, that loses value after events like this. (Somehow he got his property designated as "commercial" which gives him $6M in coverage vs $3M for residential. The second guy is loaded too but nowhere near the other guy. His place is worth $5.5M or so. We quoted $5M with the same deductibles and his annual premium was $92K. I asked if he'd send me his FAIR plan, which he did. He's paying about $12K annually for $2.7M for his home and about $3M TIV. I was going to go back to Chubb and ask to remove some stuff, increase deductibles but I doubt they will even respond in the wake of the last 36 hours. Needless to say, he didn't take our first offer. Maybe he's more inclined now with the current fire situation. Maybe not. California has probably passed Florida for hardest place to find insurance with this wildfire event. Florida is even more of the wild west. So many carriers there you've never heard of just trying to time things right -- sell a bunch of policies and hope and pray for some quiet hurricane seasons. If they time it right, they cash out before having to pay big hurricane claims. If they time it wrong, they just go insolvent and a bunch of folks are left holding the bag.

  21. Nobody does. And if they did, they'd be massively overstaffed for everyday work and everyone would complain about how 'easy' their jobs are and what a waste of money they are. Hell, they already do. I ran into it on this board not long ago. ETA: And tbh, it would be near impossible to even assemble a firefighting force and resources, equipment, etc etc to be able to effectively combat something like this - much less sustain it. It's simply going to require help from the weather. Anyone who suggests otherwise or that this is the result of anyone 'fucking up' is a moron and a despicable human being not worth anyone ever listening to about anything. No cr. IMHO there is no realistic policy that would prevent something like this, short of keeping people from living in areas like that.

  23. From today's ESPN+ article on the game: "In general, the Longhorns are the most likely of the semifinalists to suffer a negative play and the most likely to make up for it with a third-and-long conversion." And that is why Longhorn fans' life expectancy is lower than most.

  25. When I was younger, this kind of declaratory statement used to really aggravate me. It still does, but not as much as it used to as I came to realize that the majority of people making these kinds of statements are either intellectually deficient or misinformed. Or both. So I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are simply misinformed. Every department/agency has what is called a PIO (Public Information Officer). He or she has been designated as the mouthpiece for the agency when high visibility incidents occur in that agency’s jurisdiction. They have been beaten over the head by city lawyers, HR, and their superior(s) with what to say and how to say it. 98% of the time they are a desk jockey position; not someone that is currently assigned to operations and engaged in daily tasks. If you’ll notice, they almost always have on a white shirt and/or white helmet (and it’s not dirty). If it is dirty, it’s because they borrowed it from someone else. Thanks for coming to my TED talk

  27. I've always thought the Big 12 breeds the most creative/cutting edge coaches, for whatever reason. Texas always got other teams' best shots, and they would scheme specifically for Texas--with trick plays/tendency challenges/etc. that reflected some pretty high level coaching, even if the athletes on the field left something to be desired. I think we saw similar coaching from Dillingham last week--the fake punt, HB pass, and defensive stunting that we were not prepared for. For that reason, I think it behooves everyone to pay attention to the Big 12, as a lot of the most successful CFB concepts have come out of the conference in the last 25 years.
