  1. I am so damn fortunate to have such good friends. My family is now settled into my dear friend’s parents house in Hancock Park that I grew up hanging in when I was just a boy. They just moved his 93 year old dad out and were starting to prep it for sale, but my dear friend (I was his best man and we’ve been friends for I guess almost 50 years) insisted we move in and his siblings were equally adamant. We don’t have a kitchen as they have it ripped up but who gives a shit. Our animals are settled, we have a place to sleep, and we’re in a great place. We may be weeks before we can go home. And I had another lifelong friend and his wife who we love dearly bring us a bunch of clothes because we have just a few things. We hav e it so much better than those who lost their homes that I feel guilty. But my job is to take care of my family and my friends allowed me to do that. And it’s kinda cool to be back in the hood I used to ride my bike around and see all my friends. I had two other dear friends on this street when I was a kod. Damn our family is exhausted from this.

  3. Happy for this dude. He cared about academics and so did his mother. He got his degree. He turned out to be more of a project than early help, but he ended up being dominant at times and will likely be a top 60 pick. Now he can go get paid.

  4. Listening briefly to OTF, Gerry said Williams might come back if his knee injury prevents him from trying out for the NFL in March at full strength. But then Gerry read a Hims ad and after I heard him say the words “erection” and “ejaculation” I had to turn off the podcast.

  5. IMO, Facebook has done more than any thing else to create the nightmare we're living in. This political climate does not exist without Facebook.

  6. the only problem I had all night was the 2 inexplicable plays. 1) Complete prevent idiot shit before half leading to score from Henderson. 2) 2nd and goal from the 1. 2 completely unjustifiable playcalls in any world. Not even hindsight is what makes those bad calls, they were pure dogshit. Texas is coming back strong or even stronger next season. Early enrollees just got to campus. Sark will figure out how to stop getting cute inside the 5 and put points up.

  11. All of you offering to help gives me faith in humanity. You don't know these people. Shit you don't know me. But the complete and utter devastation our community suffered is absolutely incomprehensible. By no means should you feel obligated, but if you want to help and want to make sure it goes to people in need and not scammers or charities that eat half of the donations in "administrative costs" here are 2 GFMs of people who are very close to us. One is the family of my daughter's best friend the other is one of my son's good friends. Both lost their homes and are really just lost right now. This surly community of assholes can sometimes just blow me away. Hell, this was the first place I shared my cancer diagnosis after telling my wife. It really helped me emotionally. https://gofund.me/e4dcdad0 https://gofund.me/5bd31237 Love to you all.

  13. 100% business above everything else. The guy is a real piece of work. He's known about the ill effects of his platform on Teen Girls, uses enragement for more engagement, has let accounts of the rich and famous get away with a lot more than regular accounts (take the Neymar incident from a few years ago). And now he's going on about the rules on Facebook and masculityity because clearly this is the model of masculinity if I ever saw one I could complain about the fact that when I browse FB I see more ads and posts from stupid accounts than any content from my friends and when I do see it, the content is like 2-3 days old. WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?! I think it's time we have a thread about this fucker and dump all over him and his shitty platform.

  14. This was a fine thing to say at the time Texas hired Sark, but that's an extremely outdated take at this point. The best thing about the team the last two years have been the defense, talent acquisition, and culture. If anything, Sark is showing that his primary value is running the program. His play calling and the offense as a whole is not what has been carrying this program to new heights. The offense's performance, especially against top 10 teams, is what held the team back from winning a title this year. Sark's #1 trait right now is absolutely his ability to be a CEO/run the program. Sark doesn't need to be calling plays in order for his offensive system to be part of the reason he's a great HC. Sark can still have the team run his offense, script the first 15 plays etc. without being the play caller. Play calling is overrated. Very few people are so brilliant or terrible at it that it makes a big difference. Sark is somewhere in the middle, but he could also find someone who's about on par with him or possibly better at play calling. If he does that, it could free him up to focus on game management, in-game adjustments and better overall execution, and that could be a step forward for the program.

  16. My Xmas gift from the kiddos was a note.... "It's in the mail on the way to Austin, but it's coming from Ukraine so it will take a little while. Destroyed BMP from the Battle of Kyiv, chopped up and recycled by creators from Bucha. One of those pieces is now yours." Pretty solid fucking Christmas gift.

  20. Hey all. Figured I'd give you the weekend before sending in my postmortem. Texas had a great gameplan and played exactly the way they needed to. They were one of the few teams in the field that could drop so much into coverage and still get pressure on Howard - your secondary is legit and they made this game close. In fact I think the two best defenses in CFB were on the field Friday night. IMO Ewers played an outstanding game, outside of his inability to escape pressure in the pocket. His little last-split-second flip to keep your 2nd scoring drive going likely would have been the play of the game had you pulled it out. I know you're ready for the Manning Moment, but Ewers and Sarkisian have brought you back to prominence and I'm thankful for that. On that note, I agree with the criticism of that late goal-line pitch play (we had just tried a similar thing earlier on 3rd and inches, and also failed) but overall Sark has done an unbelievable job of building the program and hopefully you all are enjoying the ride. He's done WAY better than I anticipated when he was hired. With his recruiting I expect you'll be playing on this stage on a regular basis going forward.

  21. Who could have guessed that a guy who made an algorithm to rank the fuckability of his female classmates might be a piece of shit? It's wild that their recent changes to remove fact checking are directly driven by their need to grow engagement. They WANT everyone to argue over the basic fundamental facts of a situation - it drives engagement and clicks and ad revenue. Not to mention that sweet monetizable user data to boot. I had faint hopes of a US version of the GDPR cutting his knees out from under him, but it was folly to hope as much. Dude has too much money to worry about silly things like laws and the consent of his subjects/users/products now

  23. The fact is that Blue has announced he's leaving for the NFL. The discussion should be what Texas will do about it. Fuck off with speculating about the combine or pointlessly arguing when someone will be drafted. Here, nobody cares. It's boring. No high fives for guessing Blue's 40 time to the hundredth of a second. I know it's a terrifying prospect, but I'm going to neg this shit from here on out. That's right: neg. You're all on notice.

  25. Sigh. Have reached that point with the old man. Right before we left for Germany a couple of weeks ago, he had a slight fender-bender. But his story about it, and how it happened, was confusing. Then, one of my wife's friends (who lives down the street from my dad) called her to share with her that she had concerns about his driving - he'd seem confused in their small sub-area, had gone out an entrance drive, etc. So, I was going to have to have a tough call with my old man when I got back. Well, I was back in town and up and running yesterday (even though I feel like shit - brought back a respiratory infection with me). Got in touch with my dad....and he took the lead. Said he had more to tell me about the accident. Turns out, it was his fault, he tried to change lanes without looking adequately (which happens), but he voiced that in just the last month or so, he feels like his vision and reflexes have declined....so he probably shouldn't drive. So he'll need my help to get the car into the shop for repairs, and then to figure out what to do with it. And then, "I guess I'll need to start taking Uber." I told him that YES, and that's GOOD AND FINE. So, tonight, I'm going to make sure his app is set up, and maybe we'll even take a test trip to dinner and back. But it's hard, of course. He's an independent man, and stubborn like all of us. But god bless him, he's an engineer, and he sees shit pretty matter-of-fact from a safety standpoint. And when he realized the data said he shouldn't drive anymore, he made the decision himself. I'm really proud of him for that. But what killed me was him telling me that he was so sorry for asking for my help, and imposing. He and my mom always tried to NOT be a burden, to NOT need my help, so he's sorry that's changing. I told him to stop that -- and that one of the things I've realized is that needing help doesn't mean you're a burden, or you're imposing, or you're a problem. It means you're part of a family and a community. I need help sometimes, and it's hard for me to ask for it and accept it because I'm a problem-SOLVER to the core of my being (he's the same way). But we need to get over that shit. It's okay to need help, and to ask for it. It's what we do. I'm headed over there tonight to see him. I feel pretty shitty about how little help I've been since my mom died. This shit is hard.

  28. @Sbbruin my heart goes out to you and your family and your community. I don’t personally know anyone in the surly community, but you gain a certain respect for posters after years of being present here and you certainly fit that profile. I’m not a huge go fund me guy, but this is the time that the platform makes a ton of sense. If there’s a certain cause or family that really needs the help, please point us in the right direction. I want to throw money at the ones that need it and deserve it and not to a group that ultimately will distribute it in a way that I have no clue where it ends up. So sorry that you have to live this hell, but it’s inspiring to watch you take it on with the attitude you are handling it with. Godspeed and praying the next days are better than the last.
