One of the biggest myths people somehow swallow is that there is some huge difference between government and corporate employees. Both groups are just people doing a job. Like any large body of people doing a job, 10-20% are going to kick ass at what they do, 10-20% are going to suck shit at what they do and the rest are all going to be somewhere from slightly below to slightly above average at what they do. The venue for the work makes absolutely no difference.18 points

Reporting back as ordered... As per the recommendations, I got the classic double double. Since we were in New Mexico, grilled chiles made the most sense. The folks with me got fries so I went with rings. Gave the Mex Hot Chocolate shake a try. And now the review... Fries/rings were OK. Not undercooked as I'd feared, but not outstanding. Just good. I liked the spicy ketchup, although I was a little bit disappointed. I was expecting something similar to siraracha ketchup or one of the habenero varieties I've had... This one really didn't have a kick that I noticed. It was good, and certainly better than the "fancy" regular version, tho. The milkshake was good as well... Didn't really taste the chocolate as much as the cinnamon. I agree with the person who said that it tasted more like egg nog. As for the burger... Look... I love me a good burger. And I always try to consider apples to apples- none of this $.75 slider comparing to a $13 Five Guys bacon cheeseburger. I'll also admit to being a big fan of In-N-Out (living in SoCal for about 12 years). With that in mind: This may have been the best chain burger I've ever had, and definitely the top at this price point. Super juicy beef, and it was still a little medium on the inside (not gray like most overcooked fast food offerings). Relatedly, this led to my only critique of the experience... The WB napkins are the worst, and I'm thankful to have needed a whole tree worth of them to deal with the glorious mess. While I would have preferred a different cheese than American, the peppers added a perfect texture and taste to every bite... Looking forward to grilled jalapeños and bacon on the next one. In summary... Really appreciate the Surly hivemind helping me out, but now I hate not having a store anywhere near where I live. Staying with a theme...17 points

Have you been paying attention to the gutting of DOJ and dropping basically every corruption case on the books? SDNY has completely been ransacked over their refusal to drop the Eric Adams case. Buddy we are off the goddamn rails. The courts are for sale and do not follow precedence any longer16 points

I hope your son will stay in. The goal here is to make officers like your son leave in disgust and make soldiers like the one quoted stay. That is also what’s behind the purge of the civil service, it’s nothing to do with efficiency or saving money for the taxpayer.15 points

my favorite reply: Biden's puppeteers were using government hiring as a way to hide some of our awful economic numbers from taxpayers. In top of that, they were straight falsifying numbers. Then, they were planting mines that Trump would have to deal with by doing things like hiring unnecessary people to saddle Trump. It isn't sad that those people are losing jobs. They never should have been given jobs. Biden's puppeteers caused the issue. Trump is solving it. This is why, no matter how fat the leopoards get, nothing will change.14 points

My BIL, who might actually be the most interesting man in the world, worked a summer seasonal job as a park ranger in Yellowstone four years ago. This is a man who has a PhD, is a master wooden boat builder, built his home by himself, has fished salmon in Alaska professionally, served in the Peace Corps and has been a Fulbright Scholar in India amongst other accomplishments. He lists his summer in Yellowstone working the entrance gate and interacting with visitors as one of his favorite experiences. Our national parks are a treasure that should not be trifled with.14 points

Hey guys, if you have a problem with the way rich and powerful people have lobbied and bought their way into a system where they are literally free to do anything they want with no consequences, just write a letter to your bought and paid for rich person politician, and ask them real nice to hold the people who own them accountable. Yeah that's working juuuuust fine. You have to strike fear into these people. It's unfortunately all they know.14 points

I get it. I feel like I have been pushed to this place to live in a country that I do not recognize and identify with anymore. I used to actually believe we set the aspiration of being the beacon on the hill for others to follow. I used to believe the rhetoric about how we were all immigrants (excluding the natives) and how we made this country better. I thought we had the same idea to make the country better for everyone and those around us, but that we had different ideas on how to do it. I used to naively think, Nazism could never happen here. I used to think we we were on the side of human progress. Then I learned. I got older. I still naively held some of these beliefs. All it took was a mediocre looking redhead to infiltrate the NRA. All it took was a few stupids to put their own self-interest above the country and party, only to find out their longevity within that party would be shortened. All it took was a known script from past authoritarians to reshape people into being horrible to one another. Demanding papers of others, while wearing a flag pin and a cross, and pushing people to drown in a river. To find the most vulnerable people and say "fuck em, die" instead of trying to welcome them. To repeatedly vote to create and normalize horrors of school children being slaughtered while we pretend to not know what the solution is, who caused it, and why. To repeatedly hear people demonize the ones who are sensible, trying to help (pandemic medical staff), to hold honest, educated people to higher standards than we hold the most powerful people in the world. To embrace and celebrate the profits of unhealthy food addictions, pharmaceutical drug addictions, and decreasing support for education in this country. To cravenly resist the rise of the oligarchy, as we witness the gilded age II surpass the original gilded age, while in the throes of the age of fraud. So your experiences with the flag are different than mine. It was a background image mostly, but a symbol for both what I believed in, and also a banner for those who struggled, fought to change, fought to live, and fought to defend this country. But that is all stained now. It is a piece of cloth with words we don't give a fuck about, meanings we don't give a fuck about, and standards we don't even pretend to have. It is not a hope for the future, it is a symbol to smother the powerless and to bash into those who believe as naïvely as I did.12 points

The Japanese didn’t start out with a death cultist mindset. But all it took was a little push and normalizing of it to get it going. Celebrate heroic (ancestor)figures like Minamoto Tametomo who first started the suicide instead of capture and the rest of them followed suit. The non-stop anti-trans ads and accusations creeps into people’s minds. Just as propaganda does. The history books are filled with examples of this, heck we only recently had a massacre in Myanmar that was caused by these lies being perpetuated. Would you like me to go on with examples?12 points

Anecdotal, but last week a soldier in my son’s class made some horrible obnoxious racist remarks, and when told he would be reprimanded laughed and exclaimed “no disrespect, sir, but a month ago I would have. Now that would be illegal.” He’s right. And that’s a painful pill.11 points

The one thing every European agrees that the US does better than every other country is our national parks. Why are we attacking park rangers who make maybe 25k? What's the point. How do all these layoffs increase efficiency because that's not what that word means.10 points

as someone who spent 30 years in the public sector in high pressure, high stress, and high visibility positions, in executive and political agencies...my heart seriously breaks for these people. not only losing their careers and incomes and ability to provide for their families but also being demonized and laughed at by the musky magats. i cannot even imagine how awful these poor people feel. it's just evil.10 points

Holy S! I love all of y'all. My son got in. We were sweating. 3.85 GPA and 1410 on SAT (I think; don't quote me), but in an IB high school, he was "only" top 8%. He'll be in RTF. I'm so happy for him. He's slightly on the spectrum, so extremely quiet and shy. I've never heard him raise his voice or even cuss. He's had at least 8 job interviews over the past 3 months with no offers. I'm under the impression that his demeanor was a hindrance. And NOW.... a true Longhorn. Holy shit! My son is a Longhorn!10 points

In another thread over on TexAgs this week, a regular poster was lamenting the loss of contact with their daughter after she got into a big fight with them over politics - but really, it was because “she chose the gay lifestyle” and they were spending all their time trying to beat her over the head with scripture and pray the gay away. A few replies pushed back about unconditional love and trying to be accepting - but the majority were in agreement with the OP. The tell was how many of them also admitted to being estranged from kids or other family members - all because they were being assholes and could never admit any other non-far-right-wing viewpoint was valid.9 points

So, let's assume that reducing government employees and associated expenditure is a good thing. What might make it a good thing? Reducing the cost of government? Reducing the ability of government to "interfere" with daily life? Assuming either of those things is actually good, then we might expect a reduction in the deficit or lower taxes. We may see the latter, but probably not further than the already irresponsible 2017 cut, which was mostly ineffectual for the little guy. Does anyone actually think we'll see a deficit reduction? I suppose the level of government "interference" is impossible to assess, but I bet you will see a decline in the quality of government services that is more objective and more subjectively felt outside corporate boardrooms. So, even if you think cutting government employees and expenditures is good in some abstract sense, I don't think we're actually going to see any of the follow-on effects that really test that proposition. He's not transparent at all, that's a misuse of the term. What he does do, and what Biden failed to do, was bloviate excessively about his alleged accomplishments.9 points
