  2. I think about Mark all the time. After his Music Fest at The Far Out lounge Maria, his wife, was handing out small canisters of his ashes to spread where we wanted. Pleased to inform that Mark holds permanent residence at the Disch down the 3rd base line. 🀘🏽 Miss you Mark.

  3. Can't edit, but I say all the foregoing as a child who was a massive Civil War buff, and a "fan of the Confederacy," based mostly on regional bias and being 8 or 9. I do not remember anyone, which seemingly would have been my parents, nudging me in that direction. But, I distinctly remember my parents reminding me that ultimately, the Confederacy was on the wrong side. I was too young to be a racist, and my parents did nothing to encourage me to be one. Later in life, I don't recall being fed anything historically inaccurate about secession or the cause of the Civil War, even in a great white ISD. But the whole lost cause mythology was there, omnipresent even at UT. Offering up historical complexities like states' rights, the role of the federal government, and the loyalties of US military officers to their states rather than their country/federal government. That stuff is all fine as far as it goes for a deep dive biography or an upper-division history class. But the fact that Confederate apologism worked its way into everyday discussion of the Civil War even among the uneducated is a testament to how effective a propaganda tool it was. And still is. I'm not a huge fan of bandying about traitor/treason regarding today's public enemies as I think it often overstates a case that is bad enough. But it absolutely applies to Confederate government officials and military officers. Jefferson Davis, traitor. R.E. Lee, traitor. Stonewall Jackson, traitor. Nathan Bedford Forrest, traitor and virulent racist. Hood, Bragg, traitors. Simkins, traitor. Littlefield, traitor. There's no way around it.

  5. I am going to try hard and not Cr this. But I think it needs to be said. Thailand is a key ally in SE Asia. Burma is tottering. I read the news today and I see all the other countries heading in with assistance. the US? nope. Where the fuck are the FAST teams? Oh yeah, USAID. Why has Farifax, LA County or Miami not deployed their rescue teams? Has the WASP been sent in to conduct coordination? We make fun of our country quite a bit. And rightfully so. When it comes to Humanitarian shit no one is better. We can drop in an ATC group anywhere and coordinate flights. Take over a port and get shit offloaded? Yep, we are damn good. And silence. In a previous time I would be heading to the area. Straight to the center? nope. That is where the experts need to be. We would be coordinating with all our allies, the USN, the USAF from a country near by. This really makes me sad. All of my friends feel helpless we are not heading in. Rant over. God protect those in the area. Except for the Burmese generals. Fuck those asian aggies.

  6. I would be half as happy for a Barnes title as I would be for a Texas title. I really liked and respected him. It was obviously time for him to go as things had run its course at Texas- but the way he pulled out of the tailspin he was in and built a shitty st the time TN into a national contender speaks well for him as a coach. Good luck to the Ricktator on getting back to final four #2.

  8. So, I don’t know if I’m alone in this but this offseason feels like an absolute beating. 2020 is the only offseason since the start of the Herman era that I remember being so unenjoyable. The Quinn vs. Arch stuff has been beaten to death but the people pushing it won’t shut the fuck up about it. I’d love to have a surly thread to keep up with offseason news and discussion, but I don’t want to be subjected to spillage from the 500 page Quinn bitch fest. Can we start negging discussion of last year’s QB room management on here? I’ve found myself logging in to my friend’s OB account recently. If that isn’t a cry for help I don’t know what is.

"I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time - when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness." --Carl Sagan

  23. And, you can attempt to mitigate their actions in certain ways that are not wholly invalid, but the fact remains that they were traitors, actual treasonous traitors, to the United States of America. The whole lost cause thing is pretty disgusting. It was, in essence, a set of oligarchs with a business model (slavery in cotton farming) that they attempted to make policy of the United States, at least for them, if no one else. The vast majority of southerners were a lot like magats: very little to gain for supporting their oligarchy leaders, but support they did, often with their lives. And the oligarchs were sore losers who spread their sore loserness among more common or garden southerners, creating a false nobility to the whole fucking mess. And most of them were virulent racists that encouraged virulent racism among the masses, although the masses had more in common with slaves than the oligarchy. And the lost cause mutated into Jim Crow, meaning the peculiar institution would continue to haunt this country for probably the rest of its existence, certainly to the present, at any rate.

  27. This has been weird with Golden. The former PFF guys (now Check the Mic) - who I like and think are pretty reasonable and aren’t hot-takey - were doing their top 10 WRs this week and had Golden pretty low, and the rationale was that nobody thinks he’s really that fast. Even argued that there must have been an error on his combine time. Now this about β€œfield speed.” It is funny because the entire purpose of the combine is to add objective information to subjective scouting analysis. If you’re going to dismiss some guys’ combine performance because it doesn’t confirm your subjective position, then you shouldn’t factor anybody’s combine performance into your evaluation. But these guys keep citing other players’ times and jumps when lauding them.
