Huge shout out to @BillyGoatHill for transferring his tickets for today's game to my wife. I was already taking my 4.5-year-old son, but my wife also got to take our 2.5-year-old son. It was both of their first games in person (however, we do watch most of them on TV). They got to experience one hell of an offensive showing, including the ultra exciting three-run walk-off HR, saw Jonah Williams continue to ball out, ate a ton of ballpark food they normally don't get to eat, ran the bases after the game was over, and even got to see Surly cult hero DDA in the flesh! I am an ever-increasingly sentimental person since becoming a father. I grew up going to the Disch often with my dad. The memories and pictures from today will last many lifetimes in my family. I cannot thank you enough, good sir.22 points

As a parent of a young child, I worry about that on a daily basis. We’ve worked hard to build a good life for ourselves and provide a good future for our kid here, but maybe that was all for naught. I’m constantly doing the mental calculus on what it would mean to start from scratch in new country. Leave our family and friends, give up our jobs, our home, everything that’s ever been considered normal to us. How bad does American life have to get before pulling that ripcord? I’m angry about the open oppression of minorities, immigrants, and trans people. I’m angry that our president talks about claiming Greenland by any means necessary and tries to rewrite history about Putin’s war on Ukraine. I’m angry that the orange man thinks tariffs are a viable economic strategy. I’m angry that education and medicine and science and the rule of law are under attack. I’m angry that our congress has rolled over and does nothing to slow the power grab of the executive branch. As bad as those things are, what really concerns me is the possibility of economic ruin, civil war, revolution, or just the general idea that America has forsaken its values. That’s not a future I want for my child. It blows my mind that I have to worry about that, but here we are.18 points

Flattie, I am not going to be an asshole in hopes that you hear me. I have said this here before but I guess it needs repeating. I am the first generation in my family to live their entire life with equal rights by law. My daughter is 16. We haven't even gotten to our 3rd generation yet. My mom joined the police dept a few years out of high school. Then she went back to school and got her nursing degree. Then she literally spent the rest of her life not taking care of herself so that I could get out. Mom died at 64. Not everyone is willing to dive on the grenade to further future generations but she did that and here I am. My mom never owned a home and I own a home in one of the richest suburbs in Houston, before that Woodland Hills CA, before that a golf course cul-de-sac. Now I am not rich, but my daughter has never known struggle. Most blacks are somewhere between my mom and me. Now you mentioned slavery which is a mistake a lot of conservative whites always make when having a little civil discourse about the black struggle. After slavery you had a huge backlash about blacks being free as soon as you know who got in office. Then came decades of taking away any progress blacks made. Debt Peonage. Jim Crowe. Racial Covenants. Redlining. Whites were violent against blacks on the regular. Then came the 70's and being physically violent against blacks wasn't kosher. So whites started attacking blacks through law making like stop and frisk. The US prison population was about 300,00 in 1970 and almost 2 million 3 decades later. Reagan instituted the 100-1 law where 5 grams of crack got you the same sentence as 500 grams of powder. Crackheads with 3 little rocks in their pocket were going away for years instead of getting help under the guise of "distribution". Again, any progress the black community made was being wiped out with swaths of people being put away for a ridiculous amount of years for having an addiction. Then came the 94 crime bill, the 3 strikes and your out bill, and gang injunction. Under gang injunctions if you were caught on the street after curfew. Jail. If you were thought to be a gang member and you were talking to another suspected gang member. Jail. If you were believed to be wearing what law enforcement saw as gang colors, or had suspicious tattoos. Jail. So you see buddy, they have never left us alone. It's 2025 and The President of the United States of America is attacking Universities for teaching about African Americans and punishing anyone with a Diversity program. But yeah......slavery. PS. As soon as white people started smoking weed regularly they decriminalized it. They also started trying to get people help when the opioid epidemic hit White America. Had that been us they would've increased the sentences.15 points

I've never really been into doomsday cults to begin with, but considering how most of these people vote, and what they've done, I'm completely out of fucks to give when it comes to religion. It's fucking insanity. Santa Claus for people who are scared of dying.13 points

My wife and I met with a nutritionist/dietician over spring break. We both could stand to lose 20ish lbs. We were in deep focusing on macros and different diets/fasting and she said stop all that. Get your steps in. Walk after dinner then nothing else to eat until breakfast. This is a big one. Eat breakfast lunch and dinner. 500 cals each. 1500 per day If you're off a bit NBD. But aim for 500 cals. She said I could have 1800 but 1500 works fine for me Eat breakfast. We weren't. Eat it, that way you're not starving at lunch and over eat. Same for lunch/dinner. Don't skip meals. If you have to miss a meal because of work or something get a snack to get you through and then 500 for the next meal. We keep Clif Bars on us. Focus on protein and veggies. Obviously. She said after a couple weeks your body will start to send you messages that your full, sooner. And damn if it doesn't work. I'm usually a 3 breakfast taco guy. Yesterday I was full at 2. I've lost 9lbs since March 12 and my wife is down 6. Don't make it more complicated than it is. If you have a bad day get back to the routine tomorrow. Something about meeting with her and her following up with us made it click and it's become second nature in about 5 weeks time. Good luck to everyone.11 points

It’s becoming very clear that you: a) don’t understand any of this, and b) you’re attempting to repeat something you heard elsewhere, something that was also untrue to begin with, but you have such a poor understanding of the issue that you can’t even properly paraphrase somebody else’s incorrect assertion.9 points

🙄 tell that to all of the fat athletes and skinny alcoholics. you know i’d love to give you my sleep disorders and sleep schedule, watch your health deteriorate, watch you balloon back up to being a fatty again, and then have you tell me more about how it’s a choice. FTR, i was fit and athletic for the first 15+ years of my life before taking the rx drug risperidal caused me to gain 120 lbs in one school year. since then my weight and health have been a rollercoaster, and three different times since i was 16 i’ve lost 100+ lbs through positive changes in my diet, sleep patterns, exercise habits, hours of sunlight and human interaction, etc. i love that shit. i’ve always been wired to go after as much if that as i can, my whole life. and yet and still, every single time ive lost the weight ive gone and gained the weight back, in no small part because of such severe sleep issues that i lost my dream job and haven’t been able to work in 10 years. i’ve been on disability for 8 years and, barring divine intervention, ill never work again. i was 6’1”, 200 lbs in 2014, going on hour-long runs first thing every morning, and going to my dream job every day, where i got to be outside and active most of the day. today, after years of chronic isolation and severe sleep deprivation (and it goes so far. whine just deprivation), plus a litany of other mental health issues, and series of injuries which no doubt could have been avoided were i in better shape, i now find myself at 395 lbs and in considerably poor health, despite being someone loves nothing more than exercising and who was never overweight to begin with before rx drugs ruined my body. people like you who lose weight and then declare that being fat is a choice are dumb. like, actually stupid, for believing that. “i did a thing, therefore everyone else in the world has no excuse not to be able to do the same thing. i chose not to be fat, therefore anyone can.” yeah. dumb. and another thing- you’re really gonna sit there and say, “being fat is a choice” about the millions of poor, uneducated, umpteenth generation fat kids whose parents fill their kids’ gullets with mcdonald’s, skittles, and mountain dew? that’s those kids fault? that’s their choice? give me a break. you lose weight one time and suddenly you’re the expert on all things weight related. that’s rich.9 points

I'm going to tag onto this post as it is constructive and in a positive way. Another couple of things to remember (and this was also mentioned) is that your children are looking to you for social behavior and while you are aware of your flaws (which is good!) as they grow into adolescence (and with a 10 year old that is closer than you think) they are VERY aware of them. Daughters and sons want attention from their fathers and these years right now are IT. Meaning as they hit the teens and begin to bond with peer groups and want more privacy for teenage thoughts and dreams, it gets more difficult to express the emotions bubbling beneath the surface in positive ways. For both of you. While my spouse was an engaged father with our children when they were little--swapping off reading aloud, bath time, etc as they got older, we had a conversation about those nearing teen years and how more than ever, this was a good time for Dad to really step up and be there as a person of character for them. Forget the patriarchal society that we live in (if I hear alpha male one more time, my rolling eyes will fall out of my head) and just going with things like 'how does one resolves disputes, how does one learn about compromising, or forgiveness, or walking away from a bad situation or when to stand one's ground.' None of these things have to be about being male, per se, but how to be a human being. How it's okay to cry, to be weak, to ask for help, to confess to feeling overwhelmed or lost or angry. How some of these can be used against one (revealing too much information to untrustworthy acquaintances) and how to navigate that in relationships--personal, professional, and just out and about in the world. One of our children is pretty introverted. Like the OP, my spouse is quite drained after work but something that helped us was me commandeering the evening meal prep so that the two of them could take a walk. It wasn't a terribly long walk, but five to ten minutes into that walk and the words would just spill out of him. To this day, they still take a walk together whenever this (now adult) returns home and you wouldn't think such a small somewhat uncool thing would matter but it did and it does.8 points

Trust & Estate atty here. I had to send a demand letter to the moneychangers at USAA before they would release the funds they were holding in multiple accounts of one of their deceased customers. I opened an estate for the decedent and represented the duly court appointed personal representative. My client was trying to do as much as possible to save money on attorney’s fees. They were delaying and stalling him at every turn, claimed they could not release the funds (7 figures) unless he converted them into a special “USAA estate account.” They sent him a raft of forms to fill out and he went back. Nd forth with ever changing USAA account reps for eight or nine weeks without them sending him a nickel. They msigically were cooperative after I reminded them how the law works. Wired the money to my client’s estate bank account within 24 hours. Motherfuckers.8 points
