  • I thought it might be helpful to have a separate topic related to the vaccine.  If this is too much duplication, mods please delete this thread.  I thought it would be good to talk about who can get the vaccine, where they can get it, what side effects people are seeing, and in general what is going on with distribution.

The CDC has published vaccine distribution guidelines, and if you care, they are worth reading.  They are dividing the timeline into:

    • Phase 1 - Potentially limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine doses available
    • Phase 2 - Large number of vaccine doses available
    • Phase 3 - Sufficient supply of vaccine doses for entire population

Who you are will determine if you are eligible for a vaccine in the various phases.

    Phase 1 is divided into a Phase 1a and a Phase 1b:

    • Phase 1a - Mostly healthcare workers
    • Phase 1b - Other essential workers, people with higher risks, people over 65

If you are eligible to get the vaccine and they have in in stock and you want to get it, it is important to go get it.  Both of the first two vaccines can spoil, so if a dose is sitting there and you aren't there to get it, they might have to throw it away.

Both vaccines require two shots.  It is important to go get that second shot.

Who fits in phase 1b and who has to wait until phase 2 might be a sticking point.  The "people in higher risks" category includes a lot of folks, maybe more than you would think might be in that category.  Hopefully we can quickly get to phase 2 so that we don't spend too long arguing about who is or is not in Phase 1b.

Anyway, I'm interested in everyone's experience with the vaccine and especially getting the word out for those that can go get it, so that every dose ends up in an arm rather than in the trash.

pretty much exactly what I want except they are not covering COVID yet and there is no real-time display of availability.

    They do now, BTW.

Though they just show you if they have vaccines in stock, not if they have appointments available based on my quick check of a walmart just now.

Are you not willing to leave Westlake to get your shot? You are likely going to have to drive somewhere else in Austin, as they are going quick.

CVS has opened up appointments two days in a row so I would check back daily.  Elgin still has availability if you're willing to make the drive.

I think that we are about to see the flood gates open.  Maybe not within a week, but by end of March there are going to be lots of options imo.

Well, this first dose thoroughly kicked my ass. It felt like my mid/late March COVID experience yesterday and today. I felt worse yesterday but could not get out of bed this AM. Debilitating fatigue, head fog, etc. I *think* I'm starting to break through late this afternoon, though. But that sucked. I hope my second shot doesn't bring more of the same. (A buddy who got his second at the same time/place I did Tuesday sells surgical equipment. He said some surgeons he was talking to said I might not even need the second shot based on my reaction to the first, since it's just a booster. But I won't go down that road because if somebody requires a vaccine to do something, I won't be "fully" vaccinated.)

So a surgeon doesn't know that the two shots are exactly the same?    It is actually possible you don't need a second.  Same for a ton of people but its not a booster.

thought I read that if you already had covid, then a second shot was unnecessary.

I missed the part about you having covid and I assumed he was using the term booster shot as a lesser dose. I guess that could be a valid theory

they send out a text with a link, '1800 extra spots available asap'. they're not asking many specifics other than name / address / email / cell. as long as you get that QC code, you're golden.

in houston, they opened smaller vaccine centers 100% focused on the elderly, people without cell phones and people without vehicles. the city also moved teachers into priority for group 1A/1B.

Anyone know of a “last minute” appointments for Collin County alert system to take shots that may be wasted?

Wife and I are 31, in shape, healthy, etc and don’t want to bend the rules to take an appointment, but also don’t want anything to go to waste.

Just poking around I found several openings and only didn’t book because I couldn’t bring myself to check the “meets 1A/1B” box.

Got the shot around 11 or so on Tuesday. I felt slight upper body aches that afternoon/evening but took Tylenol/Advil and seemed fine when I went to bed. I woke up early Wednesday (2 AM or so) and had full-on body aches and chills. I felt pretty crummy all day Wednesday and took Tylenol/Advil a few times. I was feeling a little better by the evening but was really, really tired. Went to bed much earlier than usual and then just couldn't get out of bed this AM. Was weak and fatigued all day today but around 5-6 this evening started feeling normal again. I'm still tired but I no longer feel sick.
