  • COVID-19 vaccine discussion

    Texas Jeff

I thought it might be helpful to have a separate topic related to the vaccine.  If this is too much duplication, mods please delete this thread.  I thought it would be good to talk about who can get the vaccine, where they can get it, what side effects people are seeing, and in general what is going on with distribution.

The CDC has published vaccine distribution guidelines, and if you care, they are worth reading.  They are dividing the timeline into:

    • Phase 1 - Potentially limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine doses available
    • Phase 2 - Large number of vaccine doses available
    • Phase 3 - Sufficient supply of vaccine doses for entire population

Who you are will determine if you are eligible for a vaccine in the various phases.

    Phase 1 is divided into a Phase 1a and a Phase 1b:

    • Phase 1a - Mostly healthcare workers
    • Phase 1b - Other essential workers, people with higher risks, people over 65

If you are eligible to get the vaccine and they have in in stock and you want to get it, it is important to go get it.  Both of the first two vaccines can spoil, so if a dose is sitting there and you aren't there to get it, they might have to throw it away.

Both vaccines require two shots.  It is important to go get that second shot.

Who fits in phase 1b and who has to wait until phase 2 might be a sticking point.  The "people in higher risks" category includes a lot of folks, maybe more than you would think might be in that category.  Hopefully we can quickly get to phase 2 so that we don't spend too long arguing about who is or is not in Phase 1b.

Anyway, I'm interested in everyone's experience with the vaccine and especially getting the word out for those that can go get it, so that every dose ends up in an arm rather than in the trash.

That hasn’t been my experience. The highest ranking person in our office hasn’t gotten it because he “never gets sick” and he feels the vaccine was rushed. He’s sharp and a good leader. Definitely not a Trumper.

There are trends in the unvaxxed population but it’s not a monolithic block. Something like 40% of healthcare workers aren’t vaccinated.

My buddy is a radiologist for a sizable group in Houston. The head doc in his entire group is openly unvaccinated. He’s skeptical of the new technology. He said he would make fun of him, but he doesn’t want to get fired.

Also an extremely successful orthopod here refuses to get vaccinated. He’s a bit different though. Rumor is he has talked blocking 5G at his house. He brings a lot of money in though so I would bet he won’t be forced to comply

Overwhelmingly, this seems to be surgical subspecialist and people who don't deal directly with Covid patients. Maybe they should pull a shift in the ICU or ED.  The radiologist frankly shocks me. It's hard not to be a believer when you have looked at hundreds of Covid pneumonia chest x rays and CTs of the chest.

    Seriously strange, considering the past.

Nobody except Abbott wants to stop you in your car to check your papers. In talking about having to show them to do fun stuff. I wish it hadn't come to this, but it has.

I agree.  Aside from the political back and forth, in which I have admittedly participated,  how do we get past that and have a unifying message of need/ concern/ action that folks can support?   Hell, even on here, supposedly a bastion of education and forward thinking, there’s a shit-ton of finger pointing and disdain for ‘ that other sumbeech.’

How do we get to ‘ Take the vaccine because it’s the right thing to do?’

Is coercion the only path that gets us there, and it might be… unfortunately.

the vaccination rates for an enormous swath of the country despite all the information we have on their effectiveness points to yes.

Same. Apparently he clarified that he invented the platform, not the vaccines themselves. Not sure if that’s splitting hairs or what.

I did read a short op ed of his (before realizing it was him) that questioned the goal of vaxxing everyone vs just vaxxing the vulnerable. The idea was to let the immune systems of the not-vulnerable do their work to create a more hostile environment for mutants. It was an interesting read at least.

Yeah but all 4.5 billion could just fall over dead 10 years and 6 months after getting the vaccine. And you won’t know it until 10 years from now!

Are boosters easy to get right now for people who've already been vaxxed? Wife (no pics) & I got Moderna, but my boys got the Pfizer. (apologize in advance for my ignorance)

Talk to your doctor about a booster. The only thing I've heard is that high risk people (olds, etc.) may need a booster.

Also, it appears the Moderna is better against Delta only due to being a higher dose (1 mL vs. 0.6 mL). if that's the case then just another Pfizer may be the solution for most, but I'm no doctor.

nevermind that we are blessed with choice even in our vaccines! You don't have to get an mRNA vax! There's J&J available! For fucks sake.

For those of you struggling with people who won't get vaccinated, look at these heuristics:

    • Law of Small Numbers

    • Availability Heuristic

    • Confirmation Bias

    • Priming

    • Cognitive Ease

    • Coherent Stories

    • Confirmation Bias

    • Conjunction Fallacy

    • Overestimating Rare Events

I know that's a lot to digest, but I see all of these in the folks I know who are anti-vaccine.  I see a lot of small numbers, availability, priming, and conjunction fallacy in particular, but the others come into play as well.

What sucks about Anti-vaxxers is that there is real stuff that needs to be studied.  But you can't say anything perceived as negative about a vaccine because you know the nutters are going to run with it as the key most important irrefutable data point.

It's a remarkably similar strategy to another disinformation campaign that's tearing the country apart.

again, anti vaxxers aren't the reason someone can't say something negative about the vaccine or posit that something needs to be looked at in regards to the vax based on some data.

Anything involving the Weinstein brothers (Eric & Bret) starts to fall into questionable beliefs. They're both highly educated but they seem to latch onto weird ideas. And with Eric, you fall into the Peter Thiel world with his billions to financially back any ideas.

crimson: it hurts, please let me come live in your workplace for a week.  i will do whatever you tell me and take whatever you tell me to save my life.  please let me live in the hospital for a week and please save my life.

crimson: hmmm, i'm still "wrestling with this."

while my dialogue is flippant and dismissive of your thought process prior to getting sick, i genuinely want to understand why it is you still think it was something worth wrestling with when all the people that you put at risk to save your life told you what you should have done.  can you please elaborate on what it is you are wrestling with? it might be instructive.
