  • I thought it might be helpful to have a separate topic related to the vaccine.  If this is too much duplication, mods please delete this thread.  I thought it would be good to talk about who can get the vaccine, where they can get it, what side effects people are seeing, and in general what is going on with distribution.

The CDC has published vaccine distribution guidelines, and if you care, they are worth reading.  They are dividing the timeline into:

    • Phase 1 - Potentially limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine doses available
    • Phase 2 - Large number of vaccine doses available
    • Phase 3 - Sufficient supply of vaccine doses for entire population

Who you are will determine if you are eligible for a vaccine in the various phases.

    Phase 1 is divided into a Phase 1a and a Phase 1b:

    • Phase 1a - Mostly healthcare workers
    • Phase 1b - Other essential workers, people with higher risks, people over 65

If you are eligible to get the vaccine and they have in in stock and you want to get it, it is important to go get it.  Both of the first two vaccines can spoil, so if a dose is sitting there and you aren't there to get it, they might have to throw it away.

Both vaccines require two shots.  It is important to go get that second shot.

Who fits in phase 1b and who has to wait until phase 2 might be a sticking point.  The "people in higher risks" category includes a lot of folks, maybe more than you would think might be in that category.  Hopefully we can quickly get to phase 2 so that we don't spend too long arguing about who is or is not in Phase 1b.

Anyway, I'm interested in everyone's experience with the vaccine and especially getting the word out for those that can go get it, so that every dose ends up in an arm rather than in the trash.

It will be interesting to see the efficacy. Would you rather go get one shot at 75% efficacy or two shots at 95%? Where is the line? I think if it's 85% or higher I probably pull the trigger on the J&J one if I had the choice.

As long as data also shows it also essentially negates the risk of any serious illness, I would jump all over a J&J at 75% instead of holding out for Pfizer.

If the 1 shot can be given at a higher rate, the population as a whole is better with the 75%. Pursue both.

Wanna hear some bullshit? My grandmother in assisted living got vaccine last Tuesday.  Started feeling sick over weekend and got tested and confirmed Covid positive today.  Apparently quite a few residents tested positive.  There is speculation the vaccination gathering ended up being a damn super spreader event in the facility (that is at least what the Dr. treating them speculated but I don't know if he's just guessing or has knowledge it was a shitty setup).   Regardless if it was that or something else, talk about some shit luck.  She's supposedly feeling better today but preventatively being hospitalized.  Just ridiculous to get it right after vaccination after locking down for so long.

I'm surprised that someone can just do a pop-up no announcement everyone included clinic.  Only a few Travis Co places have that kind of vax.

St Davids had 3225 in stock out of 4450 doses they had received as of a few days ago.  They were the only place in town with more than 1000 shots in stock other than maybe the DSHS warehouse.  Sounds like maybe they are trying to give it out.

I think APH was the primary there - there were people answering questions in line while we waited about 45 minutes. Lots of stations inside with APD/AFD & other orgs assisting/giving vaccines. I overheard an APH (I think) supervisor saying tomorrow was scheduled from 2-7 with an appointment required. No idea if they're actually going to turn anyone away - nobody was asking about appointments or pre-conditions tonight.

yeah I don't know how long it lasts once they get it.  They had lot numbers on a card they gave you.  maybe they have more showing up.  between people that want to wait and the non 1Bers maybe there isn't enough people coming in.  the line wrapped around the building but at 6 foot distance it's not that many.  It was pretty efficient took about 1.5 hours

I'm just happy we have this thing and how fast we got it.  Its pretty much a miracle of science and a lot of hard work long hours by folks.  the roll out was never going to be perfect but if we've hit nursing homes and key healthcare IMO anyone under 65 can wait a bit unless the existing condition is bad.

we'll get there and I think it will be sooner rather than later.  some thought we wouldn't have a vax for at least 2 years when this started.

Bad news on JNJ.  Nothing regarding efficacy (numbers won't be known for a couple of weeks) but according to a NYT article I stumbled across, apparently they have had significant production delays.  JNJ won't release any specifics but doesn't sounds like they will have production capacity to materially contribute (i.e., over 10MM doses) available until March.  Possibly only 3 or 4MM ready in February if authorized.  I haven't seen anything new regarding increased capacity for Pfizer/Moderna, but I guess the upside is this is giving the state/local authorities plenty of time to figure out how to ramp up last leg of vaccination.   If somewhere around 4/1 is the magic date where there is a shitload of supply, we better be in a position to get lots of needles in arms.

I registered at the Austin Public Health site even though I am not 1B.  I am not expecting an appointment for months.  I thought it was good to just raise my hand and say I would like it, so that they can get some numbers showing where the demand is and be organized if they receive more vaccine.  This is something that they could have done months ago but at least it is in place now.

I am OK if they somewhat steer the vaccine, for a while, so long as they are sticking to the 1B guidelines and they are trying to find people that live in this area.  They should ensure distribution across all areas of the region, all economic conditions, etc.  Spread it around.  Too much targeting will become unfair and inefficient.

Most importantly, they should get the vaccine into willing arms as fast as possible.  The bottleneck should be elsewhere.
