  1. He’s also bringing a lot more baggage to this job than he was to Texas. Heading to your alma mater to put together your dream job staff not far removed from being close to a championship is a bit different than heading to Ole Miss after being fired from your dream job for being arrested for felony domestic assault. Some of those guys may also feel somewhat personally betrayed.

  3. It looks like he'll be getting a little bit more in base pay (and 7 years).
  4. I know it is all under the larger Nike umbrella, but I'm not sure a Jordan deal would work with the Kevin Durant portions of our current Nike deal.
  5. New shit has apparently come to light...
  6. To be honest, if Eskimohorn is arraigned for felony animal abuse, I’m probably going to believe it’s true, even if the farm animals change their story after the fact.
  7. This is probably true, but that’s really the problem. The win over a 5 seed as a 4 seed is by far his biggest win in the tournament since he beat a 3 seed as a 2 seem in the sweet 16 in 2008.
  8. I mean… that’s not what the Supreme Court said. They might say that if they eventually take a case raising that issue, but they have not yet.
  9. U Penn I think.
  10. I will be interested to see how affected Beard is by his felony domestic violence arrest. I’m not as sure as others that he will just brush it off and get Ole Miss to the top tier in the next couple of years.
  11. No one is saying make the decision entirely about next year's team. It's more of a bonus. Any legitimate candidates are probably a crap-shoot, you might as well pick the one that has a good team set for year 1.
  12. Eh - I think it's more that no one cares what coaches let their players do. I think teams still care when their coaches commit violent felonies, but admittedly there is not a ton of evidence on that subject either way. My guess is that if Beard had come out after the incident with a statement like he did after the charges were dropped (i.e., apologizing for letting everyone down), he would still be coaching at Texas. Instead, his lawyer wrote a bunch of crazy letters to UT admins and he ended up getting canned.
  13. That's why he brought DJ Durkin on the staff, to control the injuries.
  14. What is the Texas bball coach hiring equivalent to Marquette post-time out? Are we going to hire Patrick Ewing now?
  15. If Notre Dame were eventually to join a conference, I agree it would probably be the Big Ten. However, that is not likely to happen, even in the medium to long run and certainly not before 2036, when their agreement to not join any non-ACC conference is up. Even if the ACC gets watered down in some way (like if Clemson and FSU leave), I doubt that matters much to Notre Dame. The only thing that would force their hand is if they do not think they can get a decent schedule because the major conferences are not playing enough non-conference games, but everyone will make room for Notre Dame games, because Notre Dame games are immensely valuable.
  16. I’m sure there would not be much angst on Surly about whoever they hired to replace him.
  17. I think if he makes the final four or higher, he will get the job. I think that's the right decision for a variety of reasons, but mostly because I do not think they can fire the coach that just led the team to the final four. I also think if he fails to make the sweet 16, then he will not get the job, and I would also agree with that decision. The question is what happens if he loses in the sweet 16 or elite 8. My personal opinion would be they should keep him if Texas' makes the elite 8 and lnot if Texas loses in the sweet 16, but it's a really tough call and I could see Texas going either way.
  18. I'm just speculating that televising separate pro-days at Bama, Georgia, Texas, OU, Florida, LSU, etc. will make the conference and ESPN more money than joining them all up into a single SEC pro-day, like the Big 12 is doing.
  19. It is a great idea for the Big 12 (and Pac 12), but I'm not sure it makes sense for the SEC. Does ESPN/SEC Network want to give up broadcasting all of the school specific pro-days in order to have one event?
  20. Agree to disagree I guess. Do you really think that all of the writers and reporters discussing why hasn't Texas fired Beard yet would have stopped doing so if Texas just never did anything? They would be writing about it even more. And once RT started winning, the players would be asked about RT vs. Beard and whether they thought Beard would/should be back and when. It could even lead to factions on the team - with some wanting Beard to return and some feeling betrayed and wanting RT to keep the job. I do not see how that is less of a distraction than what we have now.
  21. LOL at the thought that the distraction on the team would be lessoned if Beard was currently still suspended.
  22. Do you really think the calls to hire RT would be lessoned if Beard he was having all this success while Beard was currently indefinitely suspended? There would still be the same articles, just with the added component of criticisms of Texas for not firing Beard. Not to mention the fact that Beard's lawyer would have been even more annoying saying that Texas was being unfair in suspending his entirely innocent client.
  23. I think it’s pretty clear from the letters between UT’s lawyers and Beard’s lawyer that it was not CDC’s decision on whether to fire Beard. I understand why Beard’s lawyer took the tone he did, but I think the lack of contrition and lack of any suggestion that Beard felt bad about the situation is what ultimately doomed his tenure. The Beard Ole Miss strategy is clearly to pretend that his Texas time never happened, but that would have been a lot harder for Texas to do.
  24. Oh good - now we get to argue about who everyone's two rivals should be. I'm assuming it will be OU and A&M for Texas.
