  1. He didn't say top 3 with Michigan, Stanford, and Harvard. He said top 3 "besides Michigan, Stanford, and Harvard." So obviously A&M is top 3 if you do not count Michigan, Stanford, and Harvard.
  2. In both cases, an additional Texas team was moved up a rung as well. So although the remaining Big 12 teams were worse off than they would have been had A&M and then Texas stayed, another Texas school (TCU and then Houston) were much better off afterwards. I think the fight would have lasted longer, especially when Texas announced they were leaving, if not for the fact that UH was likely to benefit.

  4. Virginia Tech wouldn’t be in the ACC if not for Virginia politicians forcing it.
  5. I very well may be mistaken. I am just going by what I read about the lawsuit and the fact that the interns my company has had from there have suggested that they really play down the previous association with Wesleyan.
  6. It helps that they did not really take over Texas Wesleyan, they just bought the physical assets and the accreditation and dropped everything else about the school including its history and former students. The former students even sued and A&M because they will not let them say they are A&M law graduates. Starting from scratch in terms of reputation as the only public law school in DFW made the rise much easier.
  7. It looks like the Big Ten is coming for that sweet 10:30 time-slot.
  8. He's right about one thing - they are definitely more unified. There is nothing more unifying than realizing that none of them have any other options.
  9. I am not sure I understand why you would control for Notre Dame playing Stanford every year, unless you think that is not likely to continue. Obviously that helps Stanford and the Pac 12's TV numbers, but it will also presumably help them in their negotiations with TV providers. If you are trying to compare the TV value of football program inventories between conferences, playing ND every year would seem to be something that the TV providers will pay more for.
  10. And to be clear, losing USC/UCLA is obviously a huge loss for the Pac 12. I am just noting that (1) it is not as big a loss as the Big 12 losing Texas/OU and (2) it is not inconsistent to suggest that the Big Ten's monetary gain from adding them is much greater than the Pac 12's loss from losing them.
  11. Except the Pac 12 does not make money from their conference network in the same way as the Big Ten does (no one does). Obviously USC is a big loss because, as was shown in Mandel's numbers, they are the biggest draw in the conference (although not nearly as big a gap as Texas/OU in the Big Ten). But the Big Ten will get at least 17.9 million a year more just by being able to charge the in-footprint rates for the Big Ten network that they are already charging in the states that have Big Ten schools. The Pac 12 Network is already charging in-footprint rates in California (to the extent the network is available for each service provider). Again, this is why adding Rutgers to the Big Ten was a huge money-maker for them, when no other conference wanted them - including the ACC.
  12. I'm not sure you can necessarily say that because they were a hugely valuable addition to the Big Ten, they must be a huge loss to the PAC 12, at least not on the same scale. USC/UCLA were a huge addition to the Big Ten because it means they can charge a lot more for the Big Ten Network in California (in state vs. out of state). It is the same reason why Rutgers and Maryland were hugely valuable additions to the Big Ten, even though they were not hugely valuable to the conferences they were previously in.
  13. The 10 rings one is something. I guess they plan on winning some Peach and Fiesta Bowls in the future.
  14. I am wondering if the thought is that the Big 12 would take a little less money (which could then go to ND) in exchange for these valuable network TV slots surrounding Notre Dame games.

  16. I wonder if the Big 12 would be willing to sign a bigger deal with CBS that has the weekly CBS game as well as several CBS Sports Network games. If so, I could definitely see CBS agreeing to that in order to bolster that network.
