  1. Because maybe it won't be divisive if people know the facts and the context of it. Or maybe it still will be. I haven't seen any of our athletes say: 'I'm offended because it was first performed at a minstrel show'. (I could have just missed it, and I could certainly understand if they were). I have heard two people say they are offended because the think the song refers to, or is adapted from a song, warning slaves that the eyes of their masters are upon them and they can't ever escape. I don't think that is anywhere close to factual. Some could still be offended by the association to a minstrel show- but there is a large degree of difference, to me, if our school song was intended to warn/intimidate slaves vs being first performed at an event I find egregious. I find the fact that we HAD a minstrel show more offensive than any songs that were performed there. It would not surprise me to learn they said the Pledge of Allegiance, sang the Star Spangled Banner, said a group prayer, or were served tea at the same event. I would find none of those things offensive on their own based on their inclusion in the show. The show itself, now that I find offensive.
  2. BT, you keep saying that nobody matters in the conversation except the black athletes. I reject that contention. They certainly have an important voice in the conversation, but they aren't the only voice that belongs in the conversation. As someone else said, the University is a large community. And truth matters. It's right there on the main building. "Ye Shall Know The Truth And The Truth Shall Make You Free". Others on this thread are trying to parse out and make sense of that truth for themselves. I'm glad you have it all figured out for yourself, but the issue is not 100% black and white (no pun intended) for many of us. Facts matter, context matters, intent matters.
  3. I graduated from the University 25 years ago and remember the pride of accomplishment I felt singing The Eyes at graduation. It has since always been something that makes me proud to sing, to still feel connected and part of a greater community. Traditions are an important human element to bind us to our communities, and in the world today we have less and less of that, IMO. The lyrics, as I interpret them, served to remind me to try to be better, to know I am a part of something bigger, to do the right thing and represent the University and State of Texas well. I don't know, this one feels very misplaced to me, and I will surely miss the tradition - I feel like we've lost something here.
  4. This happened to me - pissed me off. I bought a digital combo safe and took it to Cothron's and had them install a mechanical dial lock - thinking I wanted something that would work basically forever and not have to mess with batteries. Fast forward 7 years and I can't get in the damn thing. Had to call a locksmith to open it. Silly me for thinking an American made combination lock would last in a temperature controlled setting basically forever - I thought that tech was basically worked out. Had them replace it back with a digital the second time. Anyway, no advice other than what's already been posted. Go past the numbers, bang on it, etc.
  5. I mean, it's not the worst thing a person could do, but stressing out wild animals for sport is slightly above neutral on the shitty - not shitty scale. Ever gotten stuck in an elevator for longer than an hour? You aren't gonna die or anything , but being trapped still sucks.
  6. Or in my case, I'm feeling much better now. Is it safe for me or the wife to go to the grocery store (taking precautions with prior hand-washing, masks)? Or do we need to take more extreme measures to not risk spreading something and try to get a friend or neighbor to deliver us groceries - or order for delivery. I don't have the information to make an informed decision.
  7. ARC doc in Austin would not test me Friday on the tele-health call. That was with an "elevated temp" that had been running for 4 days at that point. Basically said even if I got the test it wouldn't change their recommendation that I stay home and rest unless I developed more serious symptoms. I get that, but still think it's BS. Testing people even with mild symptoms gives us more data, and it would certainly change people's behavior. Somebody who knows they have COVID is going to be more cautious than someone who doesn't know - even if they don't require medical treatment. Case in point - you guys not knowing whether to trade your kids and whether you need to quarantine or not.
  8. My fever finally broke after 7 straight days. Went to bed Sunday with it, and it broke over night. Monday I felt better than I had in a week. Temp popped back up in low 99s Monday evening and was gone in the morning. Felt pretty decent again today (Tues) and same thing, temp popped up slightly in the evening. We'll see what tomorrow brings but hopefully I'm close to shaking whatever it is.
  9. Utee94, murf, When you guys get allergies like that I assume your nose is clogged, sniffling, blowing constantly, etc.? Or is it not like that?
  10. Anyway, my update. Paid for a useless tele visit w an ARC doc Friday where they didn't know what might be wrong but prescribed Zyrtec despite me having no significant congestion. My symptoms haven't really changed, still the low, persistent fever. Still none of the scary lower respiratory symptoms, so that's good. But the headaches have become excruciating at times. Like nothing I've ever experienced. Always on the right side, and the skin of my scalp is almost painful to the touch, like the nerves are inflamed. They're the kind of headaches that really throb when you stand up or move around. I've stayed well-hydrated, so don't think that's a factor. Anyway, we'll see what day 7 brings. Hopefully this thing will start winding down soon.
  11. I've had scores of colds. What I have now isn't one. There are tons of people, it appears, who become infected w coronavirus w minor or no symptoms. We really don't know that much about it yet, nor do we know how widespread it is because we can't get tests. But it seems to transmit pretty damn easily. I didn't post my symptoms to get attention, I posted to exchange information w others who may have had similar symptoms or maybe get advice/perspective. And because even w mild symptoms of whatever, it's a little scary to have a fever you can't kick running for now 6 days straight in the middle of a pandemic. You lay in bed for days sick at this time and at some point you start thinking what-ifs about it turning worse and seeing your kids grow up and shit like that.
  12. I haven't consulted a doc yet, but think I'll do that tomorrow.
  13. Yeah, smell and taste are ok.
  14. Sorry about your Grandpas' situations Aggie and Hate. That really sucks. Day 4 of whatever I have has sucked ass. Fever the same, constant around 100 give or take a few tenths. But the fatigue has set in with a massive friggin headache all day. And I've mostly lost my appetite which was ok up until today. Still no cough, chest pain, or breathing difficulties; so that's good. I'm considering giving in and taking some Tylenol, not sure I can take the headache much longer.
  15. Thanks utee94. I've never really had allergy problems, knock on wood - 25 years in Austin. Normally I'd take some Advil and likely feel ok enough to function w the symptoms I'm having, but I've been hesitant to knock this fever down in case it is Covid, figuring the fever is helping my body fight it.
  16. Entering day 4 of being super achy w a low fever and headache. Highest I've measured so far has only been 100.9. Most of the time it's been in the mid 99s and dropping to normal sometimes in the day. No cough, breathing seems ok. SpO2 pretty steady at ~98%. No other symptoms except I feel like crap w lots of muscle aches. I'm mid 40s. I'd think it was something else but w everyone locked down it seems unlikely other stuff is widely spreading? We've been self isolating since mid March in my house w just trips to the store and being pretty careful wiping everything down we buy. I cleaned out some clogged sink drains over the weekend and touched a bunch of gunk and dirty water. At first I thought maybe I got a bug from that, but seems less likely now too.
  17. Not the best quality, but here goes..
  18. Well.. nice to me anyway. It's just a standard black strat with a white pick guard. 1989-90 model, made in the USA. Serial number : E 966 XXX if that means anything to anyone.
  19. I played electric guitar as a kid, but for the past 20+ years only acoustic. I have a nice old Strat sitting in case I'd like to play, but haven't kept up with guitar electronics since the 90s. I (think) I'd like to get a small amp and some sort of multi-effect processor, just for messing around at low volumes. Something that can give me basic effects and different sounds from blues to metal, etc. What's a good way to go?
  20. I had a work trip pop up so I have a single ticket I can't use for Tool Tuesday night (1/21). Section 92 Row 9 Seat 11 (Mezz) Face value: $95 I'll sell for $75, paypal or venmo, I have the PDF of the ticket so can email it.
  21. Penalties were: Clemson 7-65, LSU 11-118. I'm didn't watch closely enough to have an opinion , but the box score doesn't look slanted against Clemson.
  22. CTJ, what you're saying doesn't make much sense. If the money's in order, he's despised by all the major factions, and there's someone 'great' lined up; what's the upside to keeping him and turning over the staff? It's already going to hurt recruiting this year, and again next if he's fired then. And we have to pay a bunch of staff buyouts again. The only way it makes sense is if CDC still believes in him. Which itself doesn't make sense if he's forcing him to can his staff.
  23. I have unlocked phones, and also a couple of old ones - so that part is not a problem. You are correct through, ATT does have a daily plan - I missed it when I went searching for pre-paid options: https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/voice/sku4940399.html So is it truly only $2 per day (+data) only on days you use it, or is there a monthly fee? It looks like maybe a 2$ monthly fee for the "plan"?
  24. Possible I am misspeaking. He had data.
  25. I recently switched from AT&T to TMobile. Had been an ATT user for 15+ years probably. Everything about Tmobile is better - plans, billing, services, transparency, etc. - EXCEPT the reception. The two places I've traveled that are outside a metro area so far have had crap to non-existent reception (Fredericksburg and Dimebox). I never had problems with ATT, and specifically in Dimebox my buddy had 5g data where I didn't even have voice service. Is it possible to get a pre-paid "burner" sim that works on the ATT network I could pop in an old phone as a backup when I head to the sticks? I see they sell ATT pre-paid SIM cards, but it looks like they still require some monthly paid account and the minutes have a short expiration on them. There must be some options though. How do the criminals and poors do it?
