Wife was putting stuff under the deck before the big rain hits us and says we have a rat snake taking refuge under the mower deck. I’ll try and get a picture if I remember after the rain stops. @deadshank it’s raining like nobodies business in Strong City. Is Missus Shank there? Wife and I were there for the rodeo parade but left before it started because of the downpour.
Local radio hints at the current ORU coach being the top of the list. I haven't googled him yet and can't remember his name.
So far I have been very impressed with AD Saal. I liked his Basketball hires but this move seems a little rushed. Hibbs was interim but he let it be known that he would be willing to continue. He had some nice recruits lined up. We have some deep pocket donors but I think they are getting tired of being asked for money to make people go away. I'm not one of them but I know a couple and that's the sense I get.
No, Todd Butler had Arkansas ties but some of the rest of the staff were former Shockers. Brent Kemnitz was the pitching coach and I forget who else was involved. I thought Loren Hibbs did a very good job with Wedge's kids and should have been retained but I suppose his age worked against him a bit. Seems like a dumb reason to me but that's all I can figure. After agreeing to only be the interim coach, the head coaching bug bit him hard and he really wanted to continue. Time will tell if the new AD did the right thing, I guess. Thanks for the response.
Wichita State let the entire Baseball staff go this morning. The AD made it sound like the next staff won't have any connection to the Stephenson years. There has always been a connection to Gene since the program was revived way back when. This was a little surprising because there was some modest improvement shown this year, 3rd in the AAC, more all-conference players than any other school, etc. Add in that he also hired new Men's and Women's Bball coaches and I thought he might leave baseball alone. @Beau Vine @shadow_operative2.0 Who is out there that would be a good hire for a non-P5 program and the Shox in particular?
I had a Rat Snake that kept coming back to my deck. I documented it with pictures on this thread a long time ago. Turns out there was a hole in the soffit that a sparrow had decided to nest in. I got rid of the nest and patched the hole, took the snake far away and the problem went away. I'd guess there is an attractive nuisance, somewhere near the garage, at play.
First time I saw her was at the Homecoming concert at Wichita State in the early 70s. Black Oak Arkansas opened for them. She danced all over the stage sans panties and I was smitten. RIP Tina.
Check out my blue suede shoes.
Friday at a friend's wedding in JAX.
It's been a rough ride at times but I can't think of anybody I would rather have had at my side. Or anybody else that would have put up with me like she continues to do.
Jason Isbell says it best in "Vampires"
"Maybe time running out is a gift
I'll work hard 'til the end of my shift
And give you every second I can find
And hope it isn't me who's left behind"
This is what makes Surly.
I too have had the talk with Bear , and you, Brat, Hulla, Bruin, Cactus, Wild Turkey, Imma and countless others. Hell of a resource for such a group of assholes.
I've read all of the links posted about MAC and it really saddens me that I I never had the luck to have a "talk" with him. I'm jealous of all of you who knew him.
RIP, MAC.
A shortish track with a couple hundred*cars on it should be messy.
There was some amazing driving through traffic all day long, especially in the last 30 minutes. Being a Penske fanboy, I was hoping that they could catch the Caddy but there was too much traffic to shuffle through in the last few laps.
*hyperbole
I'll be driving through Marathon this coming Tuesday evening. I'll buy your supper and drinks if you will stand by the road with a piece of cardboard that you have scrawled with "Muledick!".
Kenny, that first paragraph hit me like a ton of bricks. We are prepping for our 50th Anniversary celebration in a couple of weeks so we have been doing lots of reflecting and reminiscing lately. Obviously there was a course correction somewhere along the way but there were several uncomfortable conversations with my kids and my wife about the first quarter of our marriage. I was a selfish asshole, no other way to say it. Thanks for the post.
ETA: I'm still an asshole.
I've tried to add something to the conversation several times and deleted it. I don't know what to say. My heart goes out to those of you that were lucky enough to know MAC. He will finally find some peace. He will be missed.
