  1. An apartment is also less responsibility than a house. Taxes are not separate from your rent payment. You don't have to repair anything, maintain your lawn, or clean your pool. All of that is done by someone else. It's a convenience.
  2. And how much do they get back on their tax return? If they have children, they get back more than they paid into SS, Medicare, and Federal withholding. I used TurboTax as an estimator and a single parent with 2 children received almost $9,000 back.
  3. Because they are unskilled? How much do you think they get paid to pick produce? Minimum wage. Who thinks they can support a family on that? No one. People think they SHOULD but that doesn't mean they can. Health and education is important and it is wise to invest in our children. The health and educational programs in the US are lacking, so we should add even more people for them to support?
  4. This is a good argument. However, what does the US do after they allow unskilled immigrants in and then they start having children? They will need medical care, food stamps, and housing. So now we have people to fill those jobs, but we have to support them if they have children because they are unskilled and they are paid accordingly.
  5. Mexico welcomes only foreigners who will be useful to Mexican society: Foreigners are admitted into Mexico “according to their possibilities of contributing to national progress.” (Article 32) Immigration officials must “ensure” that “immigrants will be useful elements for the country and that they have the necessary funds for their sustenance” and for their dependents. (Article 34) This sounds pretty reasonable to me. I agree thay we should be better than these other contries, but allowing everyone in who seeks asylum is not the way. Unfortunately a lot of people think the US should just let in anyone. I like the proposed point system. It ensures that the ones who are more likely to contribute are given priority.
  6. First, why are they not seeking asylum in any of the other countries they pass through on their way to the US? Second, what is wrong with them staying in Mexico while awaiting their court date? Right now Mexico gives them a temporary visas but they sure as hell do not want them to stay there.
  7. Keep them together on the Mexican side of the border until their court date comes up. Also, releasing them into the US and telling them to show up to court a year or two later is ridiculous.
  8. I wish everyone who was able-bodied and mentally fit that was on government assistance would choose to join the military. They would still be taken care of, but they would earn it. Not just get money for not making wise choices at the expense of those of us who did.
  9. And they net thousands of dollars. Let's use turbotax for an estimate. Single mom, with 2 kids, makes $20k a year, pays $1k in federal withholding. Tax refund of about $8964.
  10. Why? I didn't want to live like that, but many people do. I worked my way up to manager while I went to school, then finished my electrical engineering degree and landed a great job. So i should pay more money so that they can continue to abuse the system? No thanks. I play plenty already.
  11. You do realize 40% of people don't pay anything, right?
  12. When I worked at HEB for $8 an hour, I saw how easy it was for people on foodstamps. I was eating ramen and sandwiches, they had baskets full of food. They also had nicer clothes, jewelry, and the newest phones. When they needed to buy something that foodstamps didn't cover, they used their EBT card.
  13. Great. Let's tax everyone at 15% and do away with tax credits. That should be fine since tax isn't a punishment.
  14. There is none. Why try to better yourself when you can just live paycheck to paycheck and get foodstamps and medicaid? And when that isn't enough you can pay no taxes and even get some money back!
  15. They did but without consent.
  16. I was just stating my position, not saying yours was different. There are some on here that want to tax the people who made wise choices to pay people who didn't.
  17. I think a flat tax would be fair also. So we agree on that. But when people say that I should pay more because I made better choices than someone else, and they should pay nothing (and even get money back), that's when I have issues with it.
  18. They want to get what they have earned. Getting a college education in an in demand field, gaining experience in your field, learning a trade, or landing a high paying job should not be a reason to be taxed more. Being able-bodied and mentally capable, but never getting an education after high school, taking a low paying job, not learning a trade, not taking advantage of Pell Grants, not joining the military, and living beyond their means should be a reason to be taxed less?
  19. I support them being paid more than $2.13 an hour. But I bet the first ones to bitch about making their pay $10 or $15 per hour would be the servers themselves. They would be making less, and they would have to claim all of it on their taxes.
  20. Cool. Thanks for the answers. Maybe they'll build one here in S.A. one day.
  21. The thing that is shitty is that a lot of companies want to hire mostly part timers so they won't have to provide insurance. So these people work, but not enough to cover their expenses.
  22. More than 40% pay no income tax. So they are paying nothing while others pick up the slack.
