If you camp in cool to cold weather then I do not recommend this. Those home type mattresses have no insulation. The camping ones will have either a synthetic promaloft type stuff, down, open/closed cell foam, or foil.

Car camping, I typically have a bulky, large / rectangular sleeping bag that's fully zipped open & a sleeping pad under this.  But yeah, I def. get the notion about ground warmth, etc.

  2. Another item, the Ureka! is a 6 person similar to the one South Austin posted above & it was always my "wing" on the R, Monster's on the L & in the center, I had a single chair like the one pictured so it was easier & more comfortable to get dressed, the side pouches held my wallet, a flashlight & misc.  The other available space in the center was for bags, gear, misc. other crap.  Our Scout uniform shirt would hang from the back of the chair on a coathanger (used for evening activities & we always travel as a group in our Class A's).

Also not mentioned yet was, again - car camping & weight / bulky packing isn't a big issue - look @ interior height & make sure you are able to stand up inside for the majority of the center area.

  3. Also, you might also want to look @ air mattresses for general car camping comfort.  Again, fully functional for sleepover guests, whatever, if you don't decide to like camping.  For inflating mine,  I used miln0880-20_N1-19.jpg

on the blower side & it fully inflated a double height queen sized mattress in approx. 20 seconds.  The ones with the built in inflator are crap.

  4. Car camping, meaning you won't be walking much more than 50 ft. to "lug" gear from your vehicle.  You can go heavy, no big deal.

Footprints can get pricey.  I suggest a good, heavy tarp but  don't take Zork's advice from above - if you wrap the tarp up the sides of the tent, you'll simply trap water that runs down the walls of the tent.  Take that tarp & fold it under itself & then make sure the outer edge of the tarp is a couple of inches under the wall / edge of the tent.

Keep your eyes on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.  Always a great deal to be found there.  My 1st tent we got for using on Cub Scout campouts was a used Ureka! for $ 85.00 with fly (no footprint, I got a large tarp).  The heavy tarp will smooth out any minor irregularities from the ground & definitely be durable to last for years of use.  On the other side, if y'all decide to not keep up with camping then you can simply use the tarp for other functional things.  I did a smart & knew the tent wouldn't easily fit back into the bag it came out of, so I purchased a large clear tub with lid & fit the tent, tarp, stakes, fly & extra cord + stakes in there.  Saves on hassle.

Oh, & whatever you get, you will absolutely, 100% want to ALWAYS flip the tent inside out before you leave the campsite & ALWAYS hang it out to dry when you get home.  Leave it hanging inside out for @ least 1 day on the back porch, whatever, because nothing is worse than a smelly tent that's been packed away for 6 months & you can't ever get the smell to go away.

Damn. Reminds me when North Loop and I pulled down a dead tree in his back yard. Pretty sure I got a concussion, and I'm lucky assuming a a hack-berry stump didn't go through my brain.

I'm located in Dripping Springs; you provide your own hoses, cannula, etc.

These boogers retail for around $ 640 & I assume that's without any  insurance applied... I cannot help you with that.

We are located in Dripping Springs, so delivery is going to run $ 100.00 flat rate & possibly  more depending on your location relative to mine.  Details will be worked out via PM or text, so start with a PM if you're interested & we'll move to text or phone calls from there.

I'll let this thread sit for awhile & if needed, cross post on HELP! if traffic is low.

  7. Monster is going to be an Honorary Page for the Texas House of Representatives near the end of February; this is through Representative Zwiener's district.  He's gonna need a jacket & tie.  Considering his age (burfday was beginning of January, he's 12 now), I'd rather not go in on a full suit.

Odds are probably slim to find him something nice via Goodwill, but I don't want to go to Dolce & Gabana or Gucci for someone that's gonna be aged out of it in maybe 6 months.

Again, thinking a decent looking sport coat, maybe khaki slacks & blue blazer?

I'd also like him to go with a real tie, not a clip on.

    Shag thoughts?

FWIW, he'll be doing the PM session & the split second I asked if he was interested... he was interested.

There must be over a hundred Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts here at the Mabry camp out.

Based on their agility at night, on a cloudy/moonless night at that, and apparently excellent nightsight, we are good for the zombie apocalypse.

I’m sure I used to run full-tilt in the dark like that, but it’s still damned impressive.

  9. For a pro install (privateer, not working for a shop), I referred @Steel Shank to a guy I know in San Marcos & he did a great job.

Does work well above / beyond Fry's, Best Buy, "your local shop", etc.

I think he registered on Shag but isn't over here.  He's a BassHead & does competition level work if you want that & can also do the simple stuff.  You get his rec's, buy from Crutchfield & then bring all the stuff to him.

The prob. for you, PHD, is location - BC to SM.
