  1. Interesting chemtrails on the beach, with lots of Google automagic.
  2. That's the first Swayze picture I hate.
  3. Sorry, shitty cell service
  4. DavidSW is awesome. I was nervous as hell trying to take a wrapped watch through TSA, but they got behind and started rushing people through screening, so it didn't get a second glance. New customs process in Cancun is awesome. No trouble at all. Thanks, y'all. She absolutely loves it, and respects the rules.
  5. For anyone interested in these lines of thinking, I must strongly recommend Stephen Barr's Modern Physics and Ancient Faith. Someone on the old board recommended it, I wish I remembered who. I cannot pretend to have completely grasped either the theology or the physics, so I can't speak authoritatively as to the accuracy of either; however, I thought it was a very measured and well reasoned discussion which makes some very profound points. I also liked it because it quietly stands against the anti-intellectualism that has come to characterize modern 'religious debate.' I think this is a great read for both Christians and non-Christians who are able to refrain from dismissing these subjects out-of-hand (from either side), and to really put some thought into it. It's meant a lot to me.

    Telluride

We went a couple summers ago. It's absolutely beautiful. We had a great time, though I think we found that the Durango/Gunnsion vibe is a little more our speed. Found a lot of these places with help from the old board (thanks a lot, Kevin): Siam Thai: Fantastic food, cool spot. One highlight was a bluegrass band playing Marty Robbins' Big Iron on the porch of a Thai restaurant. Brown Dog Pizza: Lived up to its billing. Great place, nice beer selection. Smuggler's Brew Pub: Good, but nothing to really distinguish itself from any of the other billion brewpubs in Colorado IMO. Chop House: Didn't get to go here, as no reservations were available while we were there, but it's supposed to be good. Butcher & Baker Cafe: This place was hyped up everywhere, but this was the worst restaurant experience I had in Colorado. Smug, pretentious, and insistent upon itself, from the way you order to the service which couldn't be bothered to help. And how the fuck does a place with Butcher in the name make it so hard to get some fucking bacon??? Hard pass. Telluride Brewing Company isn't in town proper and thus not walkable, but had really great brews. Didn't see any food. We stayed at the Hotel Telluride, which was very cool. They had a gorgeous lobby, and it was a great place to hang out in the evening. They usually had someone playing music, and my boys had a blast playing chess in front of the huge fireplace while dad enjoyed a beer from the bar. We also rented a jeep from Colorado 145. Hadn't done that before, but it was a great experience. We drove up to Bridal Veil falls and did Imogene pass. My boys had a blast. If you decide to drive around to Ouray/Silverton/etc., one cool thing we found was the Old Hundred Mine Tour, staffed by former miners who have some cool stories to tell. Enjoy your trip!
  7. Hope #OccupyLF is enjoying the one. You've earned it.
  8. I'll add that, while I don't know what goes into screen designs these days, my Pixel 2 screen doesn't conflict with polarized glasses.
  9. And so it begins.... Again.
  10. Yes. S&C is the outlet for Backcountry.com, which is also awesome. Sometimes Backcountry has the same or similar price, and has free shipping for orders over $50, so it can be worth checking. I've bought a lot of stuff from both, and have had nothing but good experiences.
  11. Buy Costas at Steep & Cheap for enough of a discount that they aren't irreplaceable. I have had a couple of the polycarbonate lenses smear or scratch more easily than I would have liked, but I've generally been pleased. The glass lenses are awesome but pricey, even at a discount. If you put stuff on a credit card for points, check if you get a reward bonus through your card portal -- I get 5-8 points/$ at Steep & Cheap.
  12. I still have a lot to figure out in terms of placement and setup. I was using an Optoma HD143 I got for something like $450 on Amazon, with a Camp Chef screen I've had in a box for over 10 years after buying it on Woot for somewhere just north of $100, I think. I hooked a Chromecast into it to stream Netflix, Google Play stuff, LHN, or whatever. I have a boombox hooked up with an AUX cable for sound, hoping Google will soon figure out how to sync audio streaming from a video Chromecast to audio sources. My expectations were, to be honest, quite low for the price of what I'd put together, but they were well exceeded. The screen is not super portable, difficult for one to move, and looks like a moderate PITA to set up/disassemble on a frequent basis, but for the price, I can't say it wasn't a good deal. The picture significantly exceeded my (low) expectations. It was clearly viewable by 8pm, and as good as a TV by nightfall.
  13. Maiden voyage of the projector. Worth it.
  14. I went on my son's school trip to the Capitol, which was probably the first time I been since I was in elementary school. Google did a nice job with my Pixel shots. Haven't touched the DSLR in ages, but we have a Colorado trip coming up, so I'm hoping to dust it off and get some good shots.
  15. Bummer. I was pleased with Breeze as far as reasonable pricing and clear usage information. Probably unsustainable. Are any of the alternatives to Power to Choose any good, or are they all variations on theme of steering you to certain providers?
  16. So as a bit of an interim follow-up, anybody ever travel with a gift watch? I have acquired via davidSW (thanks @cabowabo!) said desired watch for my special lady friend. We're going to be at a (nice) resort in Mexico for her birthday, at which time I was planning to give it to her. This entails bringing a (nicely wrapped) watch through TSA groping/screening (on my carry-on), then through customs in Mexico, and finally back (and most easily, I assume) on her wrist to the US. So what could possibly go wrong here? My most likely concern is that TSA flags it on our exit and unwraps it, ruining the whole surprise (I am secretly filled with righteous rage at this point, since fuck the TSA). Customs inspections in Mexico (CUN) is almost literally a coin flip (button press) for inspection -- and I'm assuming if I have some documentation of ownership, I should be OK? I'm least worried about return to the US, because it'll be on her wrist, obviously with no surprise left to screw up, and her name's on the warranty card which is of US origin. Any experience?
  17. Having similar issues. As best I can determine, shit hits the fan when I'm reading a thread, switch to another app, and come back later. Tapa will reload the thread I was reading, but then when I try to go back to unread/subscribed/whatever, it shows no threads available. I have to log out and wait a while, then restart the app and log back in. Doesn't happen with any other boards, but I'm still blaming Tapa because I can. BL, does the site get any revenue from those of us browsing on Tapa? It'd kinda suck if we paid Tapa for the ad-free app and that diverts any ad revenue from the site. I don't see what incentive there would be for site owners to add Tapa, other than a bunch of assholes clamoring for it.
  18. A lot of it depends on how long you're planning on being in the house. If you're going to resell any time soon, keep an eye on putting stuff in that will help resale value without doing anything too over the top that you won't get money back on (or may be too specific to appeal to buyers, like pink marble countertops). We just finished building, so I'll toss in a few things: Carpet: I don't remember a lot about this, but the pad quality makes a lot of difference in comfort and wear. Flooring: Everything has its drawbacks. I've had engineered hardwoods before and didn't like the look or feel. I've had real hardwoods and hated it when they got fucked up. I've had wood-look tile in a rental and hated the feel and grime accumulation in the grout. We went with stained and scored concrete this time, but it's so highly variable in how it turns out that it made my wife apoplectic at several points. One thing we almost did was the new wood-look vinyl planks. Sounds cheap and shitty (and some is), but some of it looks really good, and it's supposed to be very durable and repairable, especially if you have dogs. Countertops: I wanted to try soapstone, but nobody around here had much experience with it. We went with granite. Pricing goes up with grade (essentially the pattern, I think), and thickness. Don't get a dated edge like bullnose. The new engineered quartz stuff is popular, but was too modern for us, and it can get as expensive as granite. Cabinets: your wife will tell you what you want. Do deep, heavy duty drawers for heavy/bulky pots and pans. After we were done, the trivial things that pleased the shit out of me the most were: -- Heated floors in the master bathroom/shower. Really not that expensive to do before the tile goes down, really expensive to go back and do later. Protip: don't forget the shower bench. -- Trash drawers errywhere. Put one anywhere you might do food prep. It's so nice not to have to drip messy shit all over the kitchen floor trying to get to the one trash can you stuck in the pantry as an afterthought. -- Don't forget to add electrical outlets by the terlits for Surly 1% bidets. -- Solid core master bedroom door. Keeps noise from the kids out, noise from your mom in.
  19. Thanks, y'all. It's got a bubbler line run to it, so I'll try to figure out which zone it's on and give it a little more love, though the rest of the yard/beds look to be doing fine from a watering standpoint. Hopefully it just needs a little more, or this is just a normal stress reaction. I just kinda panicked because I kill things, and these were expensive things.
  20. What's up with my bur oak? It was put in about 6mos ago. The other one is similar but less pronounced. /ignoramus
  21. Some of the great places JW, Brisket, and others posted on the old site: El Farol: great tapas Maria's New Mexican kitchen: Great Christmas anything, huge margarita list Geronimo: Fancy joint. The elk tenderloin is indeed fantastic. Take your special lady friend. Kakawa Chocolate House: Schmancy chocolaitier. Cool chocolate drinks. Definitely take your special lady friend. Ten Thousand Waves: I don't generally dig spas, but absolutely and unquestionably take your special lady friend.
  22. Flattened glazed donut 'tortilla,' egg, cheese, chorizo. It's off 290 west of mopac. Here's the menu: [emoji327] Shinyribs: Donut Taco Palace - YouTube
