Also, maybe a bit off the theme of the thread, but it works pretty well in cold weather. I'm no chef and no expert in Indian, but I've been working on a simple (and not authentic) Instant Pot recipe for Dal Fry, and I like the current iteration pretty well: 2 tbsp Ghee 2 tsp Cumin seeds 1 green chile 1 onion, chopped 1 can crushed tomatoes (roasted, 14.5oz) 1/2 lemon 2c dal (mixed) (i.e. 1c chana, ½ c moong, ½ c masoor) 5c water ½ tsp turmeric 1 tsp coriander powder 1 tsp red chili powder 4tsp salt 1 tsp curry powder 1 tsp garam masala ½ tsp mustard seeds ½ tsp fenugreek ================================================== Set instant pot to saute mode, heat ghee Add cumin, green chile, garlic, mustard seed When garlic starts to brown, add onion and saute until browned Add tomato and other spices, cook 2min Add washed dal and water, stir Change instant pot to manual, high pressure for 5min 5min natural pressure release Manually release pressure Add lemon juice and serve Adjust spice to your level as far as the green chile, or add other peppers of your choice. Throw it over some rice and toast some naan or porotta from Costco and it's a quick and simple weeknight winner around here, even for those who express dismay at the lack of meat. Plenty of leftovers, too.

Things that make you go Hmmmmm.

Y'all CU applicators please keep updating with your experience. It's on the short list for my Jr, visiting this summer (after a Red Rocks show, natch).

Do you have room to put the microwave in an under-counter location, or are you short of cabinet space? That's where ours is and I like it that way, but that was to make sure we had room for double ovens and a warming drawer below the cooktop, all of which I love -- but that was built for our use, not for resale. And I don't know anything about marketability these days, but I think pantries have become pretty standard, and if I were looking at a nice place on the lake, I'd rather see a pantry than a double oven.

Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, and Other Good Stuff

Thanks! Somehow I was not signed up for him on Bands In Town. Picked up a couple in Houston, hopefully I can make it, if not I'll offer them up to Surly. -

Just paid what was probably a stupid amount for my boys and me to see Stephen Wilson Jr. play about five songs as an opener last night. This was the first opportunity to see him here, so it was worth it regardless. Seriously tempted to pay for a Sunday at Two Step Inn to see him, Sturgill, and a handful of others -- but I so want to see him play a full show at an appropriately sized place. He's so fucking good. -
After stuffing the 4th-and-goal attempt, he goes up to the QB and says, "I'm Bill Norton! SAY IT!!!" Then he manipulates the QB's lips in such a way as to make him say, "Biiiilllnorrrrton".... it wasn't exactly like it, but it was pretty good for a guy named Klubnik!

I've settled in on Third Coast as my everyday go-to. Never been to their location (I'm out of town and get it shipped), but easy to find at CM. The Italian roast and Double French are my jam.

For the MS Paint aficionados, my son got me to watch all of these with him: The Big Lez Show Sassy the Sasquatch I don't really think I can explain them, but by the time we were done I really enjoyed both (and several other things the same guy has done). Sassy is actually pretty fucking awesome, and would probably be even better if watched in an "augmented" state. I've quit trying to understand his generation, it's a lot more fun to just enjoy the absurdity or whatever the fuck it is.

Sure, why not? We're already going to be up there to see Lord Huron at Red Rocks, and my younger son will be doing college visits to Mines, CU, and CSU.

Indeed, but 1) he's cheap 2) I need something for him for Christmas 3) it will further cement his popularity on the dorm floor, even beyond the coveted bounties of his illegal air fryer.

Hi Surly Snowsports Mafia, I'd like to get my son a setup to wax the ol' board, if you know what I mean, since he's up in CO for college and thus on the mountain all the time. I'm a summer mountains kind of guy, so totally lost here -- anyone have a recommended kit or manufacturer to look at? Thanks, obviously I'm not a golfer.
-
He's pretty fantastic, learned about him from my son. His (really long) album is impressive, esp The Devil and Billy, IMO. He's in Austin in December opening for Koe Wetzel who I don't know, but we're going just to see him.

I would be good fodder. Generally terrible fly fisherman. Never fly fished salt (and sucked at it as a kid with red rubber worms). Would be more interested in watching my son catch something than hauling in hardheads myself. Would contribute to the beer fund. This sounds suspiciously like the department golf tournaments I always get suckered into gracious invitations for.

Toyota Innovative Driving Development Import/Export Series, imo

That setup was my first nice rig, and a way nicer reel than I'll ever need, but I knew it had to be mine for sentimental reasons. Which is why they love me at Living Waters. The older one doesn't know it yet, but he's getting this for his 21st: Thinking about pairing it with a Scott fiberglass 4wt to keep the Montrose gang together.

Haha, before we left I thought, "Damn, I gotta trim those nails." Then I thought, "No, I'm gonna need them to tie delicate high quality fishing knots pick apart my horrifying 'wind knot' disasters."

My younger son just had his fall break and wanted to go visit his brother at school in Colorado, so I gladly obliged. We missed the peak of the aspens, but it was still gorgeous and, like most trips up there, left me questioning the life decisions that keep me in Texas. Numerous gratuitous trout pics are in the fishing thread.

I haven't fished for guads a ton, either, but they're a lot of fun and seem to fish a little more like trout in moving water. LMB don't seem to fight a lot for their size and serve as a good origin for the "dead fish" expression IMO. Sunnies are just pure stupid anger and aggression and are fun after a bad day at work. As for me, my younger son just had his fall break and wanted to go visit his older brother at school in Colorado. Didn't take much arm twisting for me. I was surprised that the water temperature was still just fine for wading boots with neoprene socks, no waders needed. Things have been kind of shit lately, so I really needed this day, and therefore I'm going to make you scroll through all the fish pics: Nature pics in the post a pic you took thread.

Whenever a natural disaster occurs, Brent Venables can be depended upon to pull into town with a horse trailer loaded with expired groceries and baby formula to sell for a 2000% markup.
-
Brent Venables will eagerly steal signs from another team or the pen with the big plastic flower attached to it from the checkout counter, but doesn't want a poke badly enough to cheat for one.

A niche comment, but for those with kids interested in Colorado schools, if they happen to be a registered member of a Native American tribe with historical ties to Colorado, they qualify for in-state tuition. We heard about that from CSU when the older one visited, but did not realize that it applies to all state institutions in Colorado until later. Would have saved me some last year, but better late than never. Here's a list of the eligible tribes: I expect this will further inspire the younger one to look hard at CU/CSU.
