  1. per this TMZ report, ringleader Singer told the parents their money was a donation to the athletic programs, not a payment to individual coaches. And that the FBI asked him to lie about it: https://www.tmz.com/2020/02/26/lori-loughlin-case-new-evidence-federal-prosecutors-rick-singer-lie-bribes/
  2. this is the livestream from last night. Host was interviewing a friend of the victim's as she realizes that the cops were searching another of their friend's house, the hosts put two and two together on the fake pregnancy, and then they learn that the victim was dead. Revelations start around 2:04:00
  3. my favorite is ESPN expecting us to suffer through a 30 second ad to watch a 10 second highlight.
  4. How was this guy not in jail? Out on supervised release in December 2018. Allegation of rape in April, heroin possession in May, and resisting arrest, domestic violence, assault against a cop in August.
  5. I think many are forgetting that she was interviewed shortly after the shooting. My guess is she disclosed that she heard him while still outside during that interview. If you know it's going to come out anyway, wouldn't you introduce it on direct?
  6. I planned on watching this series in the week between release date and the first games last Saturday. But finished it the first weekend. I was hooked, again. My favorite quote of the season: “Seems to me, everything you know about serial killers has been gleaned from the ones who’ve been caught"- Ed Kemper.
  7. or you could have asked him before posting.
  8. when we step away from all the other stuff, there is some good shit that draws us together: Tiger at the Masters; Game of Thrones anticipation; Avengers at a packed theater; playoffs in your city- there is a lot that binds us. No matter how small my role, I feel a part of it with others. And that doesn't suck.
  9. Not much of a superhero fan but took my son. I was blown away by the special effects. (I'm sure there's a better name or phrase but that's the best I can do). The progression from cartoonish CGI to this movie in a relatively short time is stunning.
  10. thanks for the update. We are on pins and needles for your friend's unsent photos.
  11. That's quite the list of data points! How many does it take to qualify for "their kind"? Two famous people who until this week lived decades in the public eye without a whiff of scandal (as far as I know) raised a spoiled teenager and broke the law to get her and her sister into USC. What the parents did was illegal and immoral and I assume they will be punished. Going from there to "oh I know their kind and trust me they're perpetual sinners who can't change and see themselves as victims"? Nope, not based on what's known so far.
  12. You gleaned all that from reading the indictments and a few of their emails? Or from watching a couple of Youtube clips by an 18 year old?
  13. I get that thinking, but isn't the tax side of this pretty ugly? Assuming they knew their "donations" were fake but deducted them anyway, that's a sizable fraud number that I don't think the judge can ignore. Also I find the $1 million bail number insanely high. Here is a serial killer whose bail was initially set at $1 million after being charged with 2 murders: https://www.12news.com/article/news/crime/judge-will-determine-whether-to-deny-bail-to-accused-phoenix-serial-killer/75-511605185
  14. Someone complained about a thread being divisive? On Surly?
  15. sent you a pm
  16. I'm curious, too. That deal stinks. Our recent airport management is...interesting. Remember when the city didn't want to bid out retail/concession space at the new Love Field terminal around 2010? "Oh we have to reward the existing tenants (mainly Eddie Bernice Johnson) and not have open bidding even though traffic is going to skyrocket because they stuck with us in lean times post-911". WTF? Rawlings seems desperate to be able to point to any money going to south Dallas. Prudently spent, or not.
  17. after more digging, I identified the problem font as Roboto Light. Apparently that little shit causes problems for some users on Chrome. Went into windows settings and deleted it. Now I can read shit again. The font still looks a little different on Surly from before the problem started, but the brightness is restored.
  18. out of the blue, the posts on this board and many other sites starting showing up almost unreadable for me due to a change in font. At least I'd call it a font problem in that it's really faint. Thread titles are normal darkness. It's the posts that are not. Using Chrome on a PC. I've done some digging but am not having much luck at understanding how to fix it. Anyone run across this lately with a quick fix?
  19. pointless musing, but of all the family, does Paige face the greatest legal risk in terms of spying? They're all screwed, but Philip and Elizabeth are Russians sent here to do what they're doing, while Paige was born here. I guess since we weren't at war with the Soviets she hasn't committed treason, so it'd be considered espionage. I could see the US trading Russian spies, but wouldn't Paige be stuck here in prison? She's the only traitor in the family, assuming Henry hasn't gone rogue.
  20. solid eulogy. Glad you got 88 years and that she exited with dignity intact.
  21. Had to watch late last night after a party. My dumbass thought the episode ended as Stan was at the scene of the Teacups' murder. It was only upon reading Sepinwall's episode recap this morning that I realized I missed the ending. I'd been wondering if Philip might have to choose between killing Elizabeth or killing Stan/letting Elizabeth kill Stan. But with the Teacups out of it, I'm not sure how Elizabeth and Stan will cross paths working. Could Stan finally show some meager competence for the first time in 6 seasons? And at this point Philip has to be wondering if Elizabeth has ever given one shit about him- even the secret wedding could have been a long play. Will she tell him that right before she kills him to really twist the knife? Love that we have no idea which way this will go.
  22. interesting that Elizabeth lied to Philip about the nature of Paige's mistake with the naval security officer, but acknowledges to him that Paige doesn't catch on as quickly as Elizabeth did. So she wasn't entirely trying to hide her concern about Paige from him. But then in the final scene, Paige is a disaster: obviously fiddling with the rearview and side mirrors, running to Elizabeth, calling her mom. Elizabeth has to know that Paige isn't ready yet, but is she too blinded by the cause to do anything about it?
  23. I disagree. What's your evidence that they were looking for a target? Letting the guy off with a warning the first go round? Initially trying to talk to him calmly while he complains about harassment? To me that does not equal "everything to escalate that situation" and "looking for a target". We'd all be annoyed at getting a warning for jaywalking in a mostly dead neighborhood. But we'd also have enough sense to know that if the cops saw us do it again in a matter of minutes, there will be consequences. The victim did plenty to escalate the situation. That doesn't excuse the cop; he was fired and is rightfully facing serious criminal charges.
  24. Really? I know hardly anything about criminal law, but I'd like to think that witness testimony under oath and subject to cross-examination carries more weight than police interviews. And that it's up to the jury, and not the prosecutor, to assign weight. Surprised that a prosecutor can instruct a jury in that manner.
