  1. I’ve managed to avoid Cooper’s for the last couple of years, thankfully. Only go there for visitors that want to try the hype. Only good meat is the big pork chop, but the beans are nice…………. I ate at Hard 8 in Stephenville once. Once. Their business model is evidently based on feeding drunken junior aggys from Tarleton, desperate deer hunters, and ignorant 281 travelers from the Metroplex headed for Fredericksburg. Reminded me of the “BBQ” in Amarillo I was subjected to as a mere child. Hard 8? Hard pass.
  2. The original Chili’s, just north of Walnut Hill, east of 75 on Greenville, was like a religious experience in 79 or ‘80 or so. You could drink your way to the table (line ran around 2 sides of the building, bar the whole way) and never be out of handshaking distance with a bartender. Their chili was actually pretty good. I’ll still hit a small town (Brownwood, Plainview, etc.) Chili’s for a salad. The last Black Eyed Pea I ate at, in Fort Worth on Hulen, was pretty awful.
  3. There’s a website called “The Fedora Lounge” that has a long and interesting thread on work boots, also worth a look if you’re considering a custom hat, cowboy or otherwise. Personally, I despise those crepe soles on an outdoor boot-slick-perhaps fine for concrete. YMMV. General consensus seems to be that Red Wings are fine boots but hell to break in/mold to your feet. Also lots of discussion on sizing variations fro brand to brand.
  4. Looks like the Red Wing #1155 Pecos. Wearing mine as we type…….comfy as bedroom slippers (with inserts for my high arches.). Tough going as nails, and very low-key ranch/oilfield boots; they drive my wife crazy with no toe stitching, so I wear ‘em as often as possible-
  5. I sort of hate to send up the @RandolphDuke bat signal, but can this be true? LSU athletics “gives back” $10,000,000 to the academic side each year?
  6. Brownwood has been a BBQ desert for at least 30 years. Overcooked, dry, and stringy is the Brownwood way. If you have to eat there, go downtown to The Turtle (no ‘cue) or drive to Coleman and eat pizza at the place downtown. I fondly remember the Underwood’s of my youth in Wichita Falls, Brownwood and Lubbock-now, just say no. Yet the place is usually busy……..
  7. I’ve carried a hip pocket flask (or two) to family events for years…high proof Smirnoff is workable.
  8. Order a Popeye’s turkey now, pick it up on the way out of Dallas; also a bottle of Tabasco or Crystal. Pour entire bottle of hot sauce over turkey in bag to enhance marinade. Leave the leftovers with them…….
  9. Because I don’t want a lemon twist-I want a Gibson. Gin:vermouth 6:1 ratio, no bitters, stir to cold, serve over fresh ice with 2 cocktail onions. Tastes vary, but others can keep their pimiento, blue cheese, jalapeño, and pickled garlic olives. I like the tangy cocktail onions…………….
  10. While in pharmacy school at The University, our Saturday date night was 2 Burrito Supreme(s) at 99 cents each and split a medium Dr Pepper. If I had picked up a few ManPower hours that week, I’d add a Pintos’n’Cheese (79 cents?). We knew how broke we were. What a long strange trip it’s been.
  11. Plenty of pigs in Mills County, mostly the western part-although I’ve seen 2 road killed (?) ones within the city limits of Goldthwaite in the last month. You’ll have ‘em soon enough.
  12. I think you’re wrong about that, Grasshopper. My first dealings with the DEA were in roughly 1980, and they were very well staffed and _very_ interested in small-time doings on both the legitimate drug distribution side (mine) and the illegal side. Building their chops,I guess.
  13. I’m no coach, but I’ve watched or attended about 6000 games in the last 60+ years. A series is nothing; we should toss him in for a whole 3rd quarter as a change up and see what happens. Might wake up our QB1 and QB2. What’s to lose at this point? No invite to the Meinecke Muffler Bowl?
  14. This! I thought our quarterbacks were solid and talent in the wide receivers room………………
  15. Our OL may get our QB’s killed pathetic
  16. Centralized CVS record keeping. Any CVS should be able to fill out a new one for you-but go in to ask when it’s slow and be patient/
  17. Yeah, not sure I understand the disdain for Subway; out here in the culinary desert of West Texas, they usually have the best lettuce, spinach, peppers, etc. in town and are the only choice for a sandwich. (There are those triangular manufactured things from the truck stop). Never had any gastric upset, or actually known anyone that did-could happen, probably a dressing neglect problem. OTOH, I’ve eaten meals from several mom’n’pop meat and three places in the equivalent little towns that left me dehydrated and trembling for a couple of days. You eat out, roll the dice.
  18. Nah, wherever jabbed you can fix a new card rapidly. The pharmacy where I used to work has to enter the info into FIVE different databases, including the CDC. Accessing the info without HIPAA clearance is another matter……….
  19. Well, our new coaching staff seems to have aggy’d up this season, so………………..
  20. I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Easy, fast, and will put a shaving edge on any decent steel. Not in the same league as oiled emery cloth on top of plate glass with a dinosaur foreskin strop loaded with red rouge, but it’ll do for my kitchen needs.
  21. Oh, about the same as always. Piles and piles of money to the enforcers, no positive effect at the street level.
  22. I’m an old fart-fuck ‘em and their pc. And, Texas over blowU in ‘63 brought tears of laughter to my young self.
  23. Sorry, no offense meant; it’s always fascinated me that we aspiring graduates were never taught the difference between “alumnus,” “alumna,” and “alumni.” Maybe I can get the Exes to send out a blast email………Hook ‘Em.
  24. “Alumnus” is the singular……..
  25. Bowlsby is a fool. Contracts were made to be broken. The B12 would be better off to send us on our way immediately. Also, some of my attorney family members (bleh!) say that the GOR isn’t actually an enforceable contract anyway, more like one of those “gentlemen’s agreements”………..
