I don't care how much minor success one might have had in local or regional music, waking up to the idea that Bill Berry is your band's drummer has to be a kick.

That keyboard/mandolin player runs/owns a bakery business that supplies bread to restaurants in Atlanta.

  2. I have always marveled that he has stayed out of the business for so long.  Just set up shop on his farm in Watkinsville and enjoyed life.

I may have mentioned this before, but shortly after his aneurysm, I ran in to him in a café in Greensboro, GA.   I was the only one in the place who recognized him.  As I was leaving, I stopped by his table and said, "I just want to see how you are doing and let you know that people are thinking about you."   He asked me to sit down with him and his buddy.  They were in town to play golf.  We talked about life, weather, kids, travel, golf, health, where we were from.  We never talked about music.   And REM at the time was very favorite band and still is the most important band to me, personally.  For me, they changed music....pretty much were responsible for the "College Radio" sound. At the time, I have 10 CDs in the changer in my trunk, and they were all REM.  All the studio records up to that point, plus several bootlegs.

A couple of weeks later, Buck and Mills were on a national radio show (can't remember the name) and the question was "How do people in Athens treat you now that you are hugely famous."   Mills said, "They just treat us like neighbors.  In fact, Bill was recently telling me about running in to a guy at a café who checked on his health, and they talked for half an hour and never talked about music."

  3. In December 2019 I was in Nashville and had to go to Leiper's Fork to pick up some things from a blacksmith.  It happened to be the same weekend as the annual Leiper's Fork Christmas parade.  If you are ever in the area, do yourself a favor and attend this spectacle.    One local outfitter was using a pontoon boat as a float and were throwing rods and reels to the kids under 12.

That year, the grand marshals of the parade were Kid Rock and Loretta Lynn.

  4. You know what doesn't sign in automatically to your Spotify account?
    Tube amps.
Don't get me wrong. I have bought my share of modeling amps. I think they sounds great, for a bit, but then I plug back into a tube amp and think, "There it is."
I bought this amp because I'm 1000 miles from home for no idea how long and just needed a little practice amp to keep me sane after my two parents go to bed. Caring for them all day and half the night sucks me emotionally dry every fucking day. And like mentioned. It is an issue with app, not the amp.

  5. If you pick up a Spark amp, be VERY CAREFUL when signing in to your Spotify account.  It somehow associated itself with a free Spotify account I had years ago.  I had completely forgotten about it and I can't even find it anymore to sign in to it....but fucking Positive Grid did.  And there isn't a way to cut the connection so I can sign in to my paid Spotify account.  I even deleted the apps, set up a new account under a different email and it still connects to the wrong Spotify account.

I've contacted them..they have offered some suggestions, none work.  Seems like a simple thing to fix.  One issue is once you set up the Spark account on the app, you can't even log out.  This is kind of disappointing.

  6. Straight On is an incredibly underrated song.  From the drum sound, thru Ann's jump into the song, to the harmonies.....and the driving bass.  I love the sound of that acoustic that is mixed in sporadically and that harmony solo......   LOVE that song.   and I LOVE the syncopated, funky feel of the ending outro.

  7. Holy shit. This Spark 40 is a shit ton of fun. I can't believe how good it sounds. Haven't gotten to really turn it up yet but the presets are fun to work through.

I fucked and attached it to the wrong Spotify account and can't figure out how to detach it but I'm researching that and will spend tomorrow going thru YouTube videos about this toy.

When I get back home, I'll be sitting in with a local songwriting on guitar at open mic nights and I think this thing will be perfect.

  8. I'm in Texas again, helping with some family shit. Brought my hollow body Gretsch to pass the time. As therapy, I've been looking around on various music sites for some new wish list items.

    My candy arrived today.

  9. i keep trying to come up with stage names for the Koffs. LIke there's Joey, Johnny, Deedee Ramone, etc. But all I can come up with is Jack. Maybe Nabo if anyone is into literature or underage girls.
Nabo Koff is really funny. I looked him up after he was named checked by The Police.

  10. I re-imagined my pedal board in anticipation of our show tonight. Everything on the bottom i switch off and on during songs, by spacing them out it'll take less concentration to avoid accidently hitting 2. I use nothing on the top with Vary Mary or Dirty Years, but I can run them inline or place the modulation effects in the loop when I do. I can also give the Reverb and Delay to a vocalist when needed.

Tonight I'm running the Orange Gretsch into a EVH 5150 iii that I've been practicing with all week. Great amp.

The 5150 iii is a contender for my new head, but I'm able to dial in all the gain I need to get my sound from Channel 1. Channels 2 and 3 are a lot of fun, but I dont know that I'd ever need them unless I start a metal band. Actually, I have some material written for a future project that could use Channel 2.

I want to spend time with a JCM800 and an Orange Rockerverb 50. I think these are the 3 im down to.

What is the pedal with the face?

How do you like the Pitchfork? I have a Harmonist and hate it.
  11. I guess nylon string guys doing flamenco shit but... man if I had a penny for every time I've used anything about maybe the 16th fret on an acoustic to make actual music I don't know that I'd have a penny.
Plus, I think you lose some low end.
