  1. It really hit me when different friends, from a few different friend groups, told me they were honestly worried about me. It was over a few months, but at some point it really started to hit me. Going to jail, waking up strange places, a couple of ER visits, not going home for days at a time, doctors' warnings.....none meant a fucking thing to me. But when a couple of coworkers mentioned it, then a couple of day drinking buddies, then even a couple of bartenders start telling you they are worried about it....it starts to make a dent. About a month ago, I stopped in to an old day drinking spot and told one of the bartenders THANKS for looking out for me. She had cut me off one time....just said, "I don't think that's a good idea". At the time, I remember thinking, "I must be really fucking up if she doesn't want to sell me and my new buddies here a few more cocktails". She kind of laughed at first, then started tearing up. She didn't remember it but told me it meant a lot to her that I told her about it.
  2. I was hoping for so much more from that.
  3. I must have been under the influence of something since I had two of the exact same guitars sitting in my living room.
  4. She has nothing else going on. I imagine other folks have other gigs. But she is staying busy running around though.
  5. Damn...when did she grow the Karl Malden nose?
  6. Also, how weird that his name was pronounced EL-ick...not Alex, the way it is spell. Pretentious fucks.
  7. For me, the three song trilogy on "It Had To Happen" is just pure greatness. No More Buffalo, 12 O'Clock Whistle, 60 Acres. I can't listen to one by itself...the three go together Yep. And on No More Buffalo......... "Those are combines kicking up that dust...." What a line.... I'd point to the horizon, to the dust of the herds Still hovering in the air Somebody said it ain't any such Man you wish so hard you're scaring me 'Cause those are combines kicking up that dust But you can see what you want to see
  8. That Mandy podcaster is getting better with her voice and the thing goes along. She does a great job of sorting thru this shit hole of this family. The first episode was unlistenable and she threw a fit about it early on, but she has lessened on the vocal fry/Kardashian voice. The most annoying thing she does now is "my fiancé" this and "my fiancé" that. . She appears to actually do research and reporting rather than reading websites then just talking about it. The most maddening part of the whole thing is how the local cops seem to blatantly leave info out of police reports, seemingly to protect this so-called family. I kind of seems like the wife may have left the dad. Mandy was talking about some discrepancies in the family's actual home address. I'm kind of guessing dad was pissed at mom for leaving (maybe because she found out he was a fucking thief) and at the spoiled brat for being a spoiled brat and just took them both out.
  9. Maybe Grandpa is fed up with the level of dipshits in that generation and is just getting rid of them.
  10. I think he went with him mom but spent a lot of time in Archer City. Too many references in songs. Or maybe one little memory just sticks with him. I seem to remember reading that he spent some time on Dallas, assumed with his dad. All of the stories on Complicated Game have such intricate details. And "Don't you be yelling at me while I'm cleaning my gun". What a way to start the song. "6 O'clock Whistle" is my life story growing up. The only difference is my grandmother took me down Scott Street in a Buick Wildcat, not a Dodge. But everything else is spot on. Having to go with her while calves got worked, waiting in the car at the beauty shop, driving thru a certain part of town and being told to lock the door, riding behind the mosquito truck as it sprayed DDT, bitching because grandad new what time lunch was so why was he late, watching her putting saccharin tablets in her tea.... I told him this once and he just looked at me like he had no idea what I was talking about. He had just plopped down next to me at the bar before an Isbell show. Bartender thought he was a homeless dude.
  11. Experience Required: Bouncer at Magic City at plus Cooking Experience Optional.
  12. Just add: In Levelland...."I can hear the marching band, doing the best they can to play Smoke On The Water, Joy To The World". Holy shit. I can attest to the fact that if you were sitting on at the Texaco station in Archer City (from Talkin' At The Texaco) in the mid-70s , you could hear the high school band playing "Smoke On The Water".
  13. Holy fuck. I could go on and on about McMurtry's lyrics and Rachel's Song" is LOADED with them. "It opens with a great line about the 'eastbound C&O being dusted with a half inch of snow'. His new one has so many as well. He mentions details in songs that only someone who lived the life in the song's subject understands what he is talking about. I'm actually going back through his albums and picking these things out...I'm just infatuated with the way he can pull this off. He does it with every character he develops in his songs. From the new one, this one sticks out to me: Jackie: "She leased all but the trap, ponies can't graze a thing. Another bobtail full of coastal aughta last until spring" And @Celery Man Listen to "Levelland". Didn't see it mentioned above. The lyrics are fantastic and Grissom blisters his way through that one. He is also all over the new one though I don't think I would start with the new one to get familiar with him.
  14. I have 14 of 15. It stays on my board and works wonderfully. I get more comments and questions about that than anything else. We do a version of "Ain't No Sunshine" were I open with a really nasty sound, playing the melody through for a couple of times, then the singer comes in. I use the SS with a little tremolo and compression. Into my slightly dirty small Vox amp, it is about the perfect tone.
  15. 914-714=200. It is 200 better.
  16. $5,000? I went for the single shot
  17. "Don't pick up anything you can't lift"
  18. Details please and thank you.
  19. I'm going to post this here because of that white LP. ...probably my dream guitar..and he KILLS that Skunk Baxter guitar..... I LOVE the way he plays along with the horns at 1:24. What an amazing cover. And Cousin @Steel Shank Her name is Ksenia Buzina.
  20. Yep. I read this in a news release and my heart sank. I couldn't tell if this applies to just the music store or also all of his other businesses. “Sweetwater has a strong track record of sustaining long-term, scalable growth by identifying and capitalizing on new market opportunities,” says a news release from Providence Equity.
  21. Everly Brothers with a couple of other guys on guitar. Those 'family' harmonies...like them and the Louvin Brothers.....so tasty.
  22. On the same tribute album where Kelly does 'Memphis', Syd Straw and the Skeletons rolled out this version of Harper Valley. This is a great album if you can find it.
  23. This will ALWAYS make me laugh.
