  1. Had a former high school football teammate that was murdered in a bar fight when he was about 22. Also had a co-worker whose sister was murdered in front of her children by her estranged abusive husband in New Bruanfels. They were separated at the time and she had a protective order against him. She lived out in the country and had a long drive up to her house, but he parked where she couldn't see him when pulling in, and blocked the path so she had to stop. Then he walked up to her and shot her while she sat in her Suburban, with her kids in the car, begging for her life. The husband fled and was later tracked down on his family's farm and was killed in a shootout with a US Marshall. The one that really fucks me up though, is that a girl that I dated a few times when I was in college, later went on to be convicted of murder by omission. Her boyfriend was abusing her 4 year old daughter, both physically and sexually, and the child eventually died from the injuries. She knew he was doing it and didn't do anything to stop it or to protect the child. At first, I didn't put 2 and 2 together to realize that it was the same girl that I dated many years earlier, because by then she hardly looked anything like she did back then. I remember when it happened because it was a pretty big story in the Houston area, but I didn't realize it was someone I knew. A friend of mine had to tell me it was her several years later. It was like a kick to the nuts.
  2. I wouldn't be sorry if I was him. Fuck anyone who was offended by that. Such a stupid thing to worry about.
  3. I wish I had seen this earlier so I didn't have to "back quote" from a previous page, but I wanted to let you know that you aren't alone in a lot of those issues. I turn 49 next Sunday. I haven't had thoughts of harming myself, but I do sometimes find myself having thoughts of worthlessness after a friend or family member does something minor to me that upsets me. I'll end up taking whatever slight or offense and mentally blowing it way out of proportion in my own head. Sometimes to the point that I consider giving up my relationship with whoever might have upset me. After experiencing this for a while, I've kind of trained myself to recognize when I'm doing it and try to mentally step back and reevaluate things and be more rational, but it's really frustrating and upsetting. Also, the memory loss thing is really tough. For me it's mostly short term, small stuff, but I pretty much have to write everything down or that info is gone in minutes if not seconds. I hate it. I even have to set reminders on my phone so that I'll remember to go back to work after lunch, or home at quitting time. One time, after leaving work, I found myself about 45 miles in the wrong direction before I realized that I was supposed to be going home. That kind of stuff doesn't happen to me often, but it happens. I'll buy something 2 or 3 times because I forgot I already bought it. I've even gone to the same movie a night or 2 later because I forgot I had already seen it. 20 years ago, I could retain mountains of data without much effort, but now so much of what I've done in the past is just gone. It really is frustrating, and to compound it, my neurologist basically told me that there wasn't much they could do for me other than continue to track the progression of my issues.
  4. That's a very sad read. And it's scary for me too. I played tackle football for 6 years and suffered many injuries, including multiple concussions. Now I struggle to walk and move about. My orthopedist calls me the Noah's Ark of injuries because I have 2 of everything. I was a defensive tackle and played the position very physically, including using my helmet as a weapon every play. Back then, I was taught to put your facemask in the opponent's earhole when making a tackle and I also used my helmet inflict pain on blockers to help shed the block. I would come home from games with severe headaches that wouldn't go away. To go to sleep, I would lay on my back and hum loudly because that was the only way to get the pain to subside. I thought little of it at the time, but now I have severe memory issues, much like was described in the article. I used to have a great memory with the ability to retain tons of details. Now I can't remember what I had for lunch an hour later. A few years ago I had a MRI and was diagnosed with cerebral atrophy, which is a marker for dementia and possibly CTE. I loved the experience of playing and still love the game today, but if I had a son, I would be super hesitant to let him play football now. I'm sure with the information we now have, we can create new technologies and new techniques to mitigate many of the risks, but I'm not sure that even that is enough to make it worth the price you pay down the line.
  5. Yep. Me too. That's about the point I started realizing that everything sucked. I wonder how much longer this will last. I'm tired of everybody and everything. *edit - And I'm really thinking of buying a new 2021 Corvette as a 50th birthday gift to myself. Even if I have to rob a bank or two to afford it.
  6. I had a co-worker that passed almost the exact same way. He was a normal, healthy guy who was serious about his diet and fitness. Worked out daily. Then one day he looked like he wasn't feeling well. The last time I saw him was as I was leaving the office and he was coming in. I held the door and noticed he didn't look well, so I asked if he was okay and he said he thought he had the flu or a virus or something and was gonna go to the doctor the next day. That night they rushed him to the hospital and by the next afternoon he was in an induced coma because all of his organs were shutting down and they didn't now why. A few days later, he was gone and they still hadn't figured anything out. After his death they discovered the lymphoma. It was so sudden. It's a crazy way to go out, but at least he didn't suffer very long like happens with other cancers.
  7. My guess is that it went something like this: After we blew their general into a million pieces, they talk a lot of shit about how they're gonna destroy us. Then after mourning the general long enough, they decide to shoot a bunch of missiles at bases populated at least in part by American troops, but in doing so, actually only destroy a couple of tool sheds with those efforts. Us, expecting them to attack, are monitoring the situation, and when they do, we respond almost instantly using stealth and maybe other secret aircraft, proving that we already have air superiority over their airspace. Perhaps even buzzing their presidential palace or other important Iranian government facilities, just to prove that we can be up your ass in an instant without you knowing it. Then, after being freaked the fuck out by planes with USA painted on them almost giving them all free haircuts, they pop off a couple of SAMs at the next thing they see on the radar. Boom, down comes a passenger jet with almost 180 people on it.
  8. Saw it today and enjoyed it, but thought the overall story was better the first time as Return of the Jedi. The big final battle scenes were cool, but all of the stuff after that with Kylo at the end was just dumb. What? She loves him now? She doesn't even know him and she's kissing him? The slut! As a part of a long drawn out story line it had plenty of holes, but I still enjoyed it. And seeing the X-wing and the part where they made you think Chewy died both choked me up a little bit. I just wish the film industry would get back to taking chances like they did on the original Star Wars and other great films of that era like E.T. and Raiders, etc. I'm really getting tired of the same actors in the same franchise over and over again. No one in Hollywood is even trying to be original anymore.
  9. We should fuck shit up and drink all of the beer.
  10. Babies don't start at 1 years old. Neither do decades.
  11. It would be foolish for Texas to change their defense at this point. Maybe simplify the scheme and mix in more 4 man fronts like they did against Tech, but a wholesale change would probably be disastrous. If anything, they need to spend time focusing on fundamentals. You know, tackling, gap responsibility, pursuit angles, shit like that. That alone would go a long way towards making the defense better.
  12. I work in the film & TV business and this reminds me of the time I was shooting a rap video on the East side of San Antonio about 20 years ago. The rapper, who I don't recall, and label both recommended that we hire security for the crew and gear, so we hired a couple of off duty Bexar Co. Constables. They told us that they'd protect us up until sundown, then they were leaving and suggested we leave too. I asked why and they said that's when the bullets start to fly. Sure enough, as soon as it got dark, they left, and not too much later we heard gunshots, so we wrapped and did the best with what we had. As a side note, I learned that if you're on the set of a rap video, don't ask if anyone has a gun. They all do.
  13. He lived on 390 in Gay Hill.
  14. He lived in a huge house up on a big hill outside of Brenham, about 5 or so minutes from me. He and/or his wife almost ran into me at least 3 times in the past couple years because they would just pull out onto the highway regardless of oncoming traffic. I wasn't so much a fan of that.
  15. Me too. Growing up in Brenham I was always Oilers #1 and Cowboys #2. Then Jones came along and ran off 2 great Longhorns in Landry and Schramm and I was done with them.
  16. That fucker coaches RBs at Blinn now.
  17. Shit, we practiced the starburst return at my high school back in the mid to late 80s. Never used it, but we always had it in the bag for a big moment.
  18. Shit I hate links to texags. They always read like posts from middle schoolers fighting over a video game or something.
  19. Jimbo's salary breakdown this year Per win: $1,071,428.57. Per P5 win: $1,875,000.
  20. CSB. About 20 years ago, my older brother was in a terrible car accident and sustained several injuries, including his heart stopping a couple of times on Life Flight. About 6 months afterwards he was suffering from a lot of headaches and dizziness and confusion and eventually they diagnosed that he had a subdural hematoma from the wreck and needed surgery to relieve the pressure on the brain. They told us that putting him under was an option, but they preferred to have him awake because the anesthesia could cause some more swelling. So he was wide awake while they drilled a hole in his head and poked around on his brain. He said he was chatting and joking with the surgeon and crew the whole time. Crazy.
  21. I think you should go to the media. And by go to the media, I mean I think you should post naked pictures of your wife . . . if she's hot. Other than that, seriously, call the cops. No idea what small town you're in, but if it's big enough to have a grad school nearby, it's probably gonna be big enough to have a more diverse police force so that you're not dealing with a good ol' boy network. That shit needs to be documented. Also, IMHO the best way to deal with stupid shit like that is to always shine a light on it. Don't let those fuckers do that shit in the shadows. Make them famous if you can. Make sure the world knows who and what they are.
  22. Can't speak to the climate, but federal law (Telecommunications Act of 1996) prevents HOAs from prohibiting satellite TV dishes. I freaking love LHN. I get to see tons of baseball, basketball, whatever sports I'd never get to see. Plus lots of cool stuff like All Access. IMHO the LHN is one of the best things to happen for Texas sports fans in my lifetime. I don't get the animosity for it.
  23. Interesting. I can tell you with absolute certainty that Brenham has scrimmaged 2 opponents a year since my time. And they have played zero week games almost every year it's been allowed also.
  24. I played my HS ball from 85-89 and it was always 1 intersquad and 2 vs other teams. It has been that way since too. I don't know how far you're going back, but that's 30 plus years it's been done this way at least.
  25. Uh . . . in high school in Texas you're allowed one intersquad scrimmage and 2 against other schools before the regular season.
