  1. Obituary. Services 12PM, 12 May, Riverbend Church, Austin Thoughts and Prayers for the Ehlinger Family. AUSTIN, Texas – Arrangements for a Celebration of Life service have been set for Texas Football linebacker Jake Ehlinger, who passed away Thursday, May 6. Services for Ehlinger will be held at noon on Wednesday, May 12, at Riverbend Church Home for Hope, located at 4124 N. Capital of Texas Highway in Austin. In lieu of flowers, the Ehlinger family is asking that donations be made to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Those looking to do so can donate on a secure webpage by clicking here or by sending to Steve Vittornini at 478 Live Oak Lane, Spicewood, Texas 78669. University of Texas football player, McCombs School of Business second-year finance student, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity member, and a member of the Texas Silver Spurs, Jake was known for his larger-than-life joyful personality, grit, selflessness, and generous spirit of enthusiasm and encouragement. Jake never knew a stranger; whether you were meeting him for the first time or were a lifelong friend, he made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He had the biggest smile and never judged a soul, spending his life spreading joy. Jake was the middle child who was the glue of his family, with the ability to turn tears into laughter in a moment. He was his dad’s little buddy, and they shared an unbreakable bond. His father’s spirit was alive and well in every part of Jake’s life. Tragic life circumstances created a unique opportunity for Sam and Jake to uplift and empower each other. They were each other’s biggest fans. Their mother, Jena, as well as their sister, Morgen, were the loves of Jake’s life. Everyone will miss his giant hugs, but no one more than Jena and Morgen. Jake was a gifted and fierce athlete from the start and maximized his non-stop motor, no-quit attitude, and willingness to rise to any challenge. Captain of the Westlake football team and a well-respected linebacker at the University of Texas, Jake fulfilled countless dreams at both schools, including sharing the field with his brother, Sam, who played quarterback. Westlake Head Football Coach Todd Dodge said, “Jake Ehlinger’s legacy will live on forever in Westlake Football. His pure toughness and willingness to do anything for his team is unmatched in the years that we’ve been together at Westlake.” Longhorn Football Coach Steve Sarkisian said, “Being a Longhorn meant everything to him, and he truly embodied all that it means to be one. In the short time we were able to get to know him, he always was a joy to be around and gave everything he had in workouts, meetings, practice and in life.” Jake’s friends meant the world to him and were a lifeline of entertainment and acceptance. The family cannot thank his countless friends enough for playing Chess, watching movies, hunting, listening to music, boating, praying with him, and loving him. Before sports and his academic and social lives, Jake valued his family above all else. Nothing was more important than his mother, Jena Cissel Ehlinger, his older brother, Samuel George Ehlinger, and his baby sister, Morgen Adeline Ehlinger. To honor Jake’s legacy, we hope to go forward with even a portion of the joy that Jake brought us. Services for Jake will be held at noon on Wednesday, May 12 at Riverbend Church Home for Hope, 4124 N. Capital of Texas Hwy. In lieu of flowers, the Ehlinger family is asking that donations be made to Fellowship of Christian Athletes c/o Steve Vittorini, 478 Live Oak Lane, Spicewood, Texas 78669 or on a secure webpage at: https://my.fca.org/?=name+stevevittorini They will also let everyone know about other ways to honor Jake very soon. Thank you for your care and concern. The family is beyond grateful for your support. “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.” - Philippians 4:13 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” - Ephesians 2: 8-9 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” - Psalm 34:18 https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/austin-tx/jacob-ehlinger-10184093
  2. A reporter asked the same question. 🙂 The reporters asked Jim how a running back from Wisconsin got to Texas. "By plane," Koy said Bertelsen replied without expression. “And,” Koy said, “he wasn’t trying to be a smart aleck.” Below is a great, lengthy article on Jim's career worth the read. Has some great photos. Will post one below. It is oft forgotten he scored the tying touchdown in the historic 1969 Arkansas game. Worster and Street had the attention of the media. RIP Jim, Thanks for the memories ! https://www.hookem.com/story/sports/2021/05/07/bohls-jim-bertelsens-great-texas-career-says-all/4995161001/
  3. Check again. Just started on ESPNU.
  4. Thanks for the reply ! Also, concerned about defense and the wind's effect on the catcher's throws, popups, flyballs. TCU has stolen 80/100, we are 63/80. Potential for alot of running. TCU fielding .979, we .980. Texas leads the league in SH with 36, TCU only 4. Would expect that TCU has really worked on bunt defense. Playoff baseball !

Winds forecast from SSE today 11-14 mph and Sat from S 20-21 mph. No rain.
  6. https://www.hookem.com/story/analysis/podcast/2021/05/06/texas-athletics-tcu-coach-jim-schlossnagle-sam-ehlinger-nfl/4969748001/ If you have the time and can tolerate Bohls and Golden, above is a lengthy podcast interview with Coach Schlossnagle - sharp guy, very sharp. Good summary of TCU. Impressed with his knowledge of Texas players. Thinks TCU and Texas should be top 8. Note the number of times he says Omaha just in general conversation. "You don't bang (hit) your way to Omaha, you pitch your way." TCU has used 19 pitchers this year trying to find the right mix.
  7. Elder's stats from his first start. Hoping for better, will see if how he develops and if they leave him in High A. As mentioned, not normal for a pitcher to begin in High A. https://www.milb.com/gameday/braves-vs-dash/2021/05/04/643104#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=643104
  8. Braves didn't worry about velo when they signed him for 850K, about 4.5K over slot value. They like that sinker/slider and the other great tangibles. Thanks and keep us updated.
  9. Called the TCU ticket office. Game was cancelled by mutual decision due to travel. TCU just returned from Morgantown and IWU from Thibodaux, La playing Nichols (long bus trip). Sounds as if TCU wanted to rest before Texas series, and also not take chance of affecting their RPI. They went from #2 to #3, jumped by Miss St.
  10. For good reason. Tech is good. Very competitive playing with a MASH unit after losing 3 key pitchers (key starter Birdsell) a key player in Neuse, and others. Been to the CWS 4 of the last 5 years. One of best coaches in college baseball. They may implode down the stretch if the injuries finally show, but give them credit. Sometimes we have to tip our hats !
  11. Did you all see Coach Bartlett get thrown out of the game ? Argued what looked to be an an obvious safe call at 1B. Perhaps she thought the ball was not controlled by the 1B. Not a good look, especially the little curtsy she did before going in the dugout. Not sure of her impact on the team thus far.
  12. Good point ! Re: 122 pitch outing against OKSt last Sat. Ty's pitch count was 80 entering the 6th where he threw 42 pitches. Not good. Should have been relieved instead of completing the 6th especially after the doubles. We led 4-0 entering the 6th and OKSt rallied for 3 runs from Ty. Have to protect your arms at this point in the season. Pierce has to trust the bullpen. Can't let your ace throw 42 pitches in 1 inning.
  13. Listened to audio. Check tape delay, but in 1st inn w/2 outs, ball hit to K Washington in CF which announcer indicated was catchable resulting in double and opened scoring. MW opted to bring Rhodes in to play 3B. Not sure K Washington has played CF ever, at least this year. We know the issues she had earlier in LF. Not a fan of this musical chair defense when you are last in the league. OkSt had 3 DP's to counter our 7 singles and 1 HR. As mentioned above, could not get the key hit. Is A. Washingotn injured ? Edit: Just saw replay. Tough play, would have required remarkable catch by K Wash. Rhodes may have been able to get a better jump considering she has been regular CF. But definitely not as described on radio.
  14. Especially at this time of year. 4th year, may have graduated in Dec or scheduled in May. Respected her for not transferring and being a team player. Per reports, highly recruited and successful in travel ball. Type of pitcher that could come in and give the opponent a different look for a few batters or innings. Always good to have a 5th pitcher for the tournament. Though now improved, Covid made for a more stressful season with testing requirements, lack of social interaction with teammates, etc.
  15. OU wins first game, 7-1. Baylor had a 1-0 lead thru 3 and then Mendes with a grand slam. Sounds familiar. The OU series was terrible for Texas Softball. Sry, I just can't get over it. Just be competitive. Since the OU/Baylor series was earlier postponed due to Covid (Baylor), seems they will only play the DH. https://soonersports.com/sports/softball/schedule/2021
  16. Wish we had a midweek tuneup after the less than stellar pitching Sunday. Ok St has 2 road games this week, Tue @Wichita State and Wed @Tulsa. Pivotal series for 2d place in conf and RPI.
  17. Well said ! Any myself and many others appreciate this thread from the many knowledgeable contributors. Best thread on Surly - no bs, antics, just professional analysis.

  20. A great one ! Thanks for posting. Thoughts and prayers for Steve and his family. As a UT senior in 1979, McMichael anchored the front line of a defense that ranks among the best in school history. He had 13 tackles in that year’s win over Oklahoma, making 1978 Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims his personal assignment. He caused 11 fumbles and had 30 sacks for the Longhorns. McMichael is a member of the Longhorn Hall of Honor, the Texas High School Sports Hall of Fame and the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame. https://www.burntorangenation.com/2009/12/7/1189774/steve-mcmichael-tough-guys-get
  21. Contact Drew Bishop, Baseball Director of Operations, 512-471-9900. (that is the number listed in the staff directory). Drew was a teammate with Chance. Before, Vinny, Equipment Manager, would have been your guy. Not sure why he left. Let us know know if the current staff is helpful with tradition. https://texassports.com/sports/2013/7/29/GEN_0729135557.aspx?path=general
  22. True ! And leadoff batter for Texas St was LH (though they PH). Next 2 were RH top of the order, 4th time thru the lineup seeing Hansen. Pitch count (92). Some closers do better when they don't start the inning. Less time to think. Regardless, great for everyone for the team to come out of the dugout and greet him for an outstanding performance.
  23. Not jd, but review the RPI (Texas 13, TCU 4, 5) Winning the OKSt series on the road should move us up, perhaps to top 10. I think our RPI is hurt by our opponent's winning percentage. Fairfield (20-0) is a MAAC school in Conn that plays teams like Rider, Canisius, Iona, Quinnipiac, etc - I have no idea why they are #1. 24. Jaiden Fields (Mach's post above) is Justin Field's sister. OU ahead of Georgia 12-0 after 2.5 in game 2 of the DH. At least Georgia (28-11) was prepped for game 1. 🙂
