  1. Apparently there are about 1000 signalized intersections within the Austin city limits. Of course each intersection has multiple stop lights, so we're talking several thousand stop lights spread over hundreds of square miles. It sounds like a pretty big job. Here's a link to check out if interested... https://data.mobility.austin.gov/signal-timing/
  2. I did my civic duty and voted today. I saw a quote earlier today as well that I believe is relevant to this discussion that I want to share. "A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in."
  3. It's definitely been warmer than normal, but like you said not too bad all in all. What I'm not thrilled about is the lack of rain. October in Austin averages nearly 4" of rain, the third highest monthly total of the year. I can't seem to recall much if any so far this month.
  4. $3.50 a month? That's roughly 1/3 the cost of a 6-pack of good beer. That's a tough one...
  5. I just saw Liberty Hill beat Travis 86-0. Liberty Hill rushed for 481 yards. Brutal.
  6. Obviously fiction, but not particularly unrealistic...
  7. username checks out
  8. Damn, I didn't realize Houston was a city of 10 million people, or a metro of 23 million. I also didn't realize Houston is considered a leader in mass transit which other cities should attempt to emulate. Learn something new every day.
  9. I can't actually bring myself to vote for him, but Bob Stoops would be so ludicrous it could possibly be awesome. Imagine the Longhorns destroying blowU and winning the big 12 pretty much every year. Unfortunately I can't quite envision such awesomeness, as it's never been reality. Maybe ole Goiter Bob can come to Austin, and take us to the Promiseland.
  10. You reap what you sow. This is but one consequence of sprawling further and further into the countryside in a low density, auto oriented fashion for the last 70 years. But the anti transit people love their sprawl, and don't mind the multi billion dollar infrastructure extensions into the hinterlands.
  11. Thank you for fighting the good fight. I don't have the energy anymore to try and convince people to support mass transit when they absolutely hate the city of Austin, Capital Metro, and urbanism. Maybe this will be the year where they no longer can vote in the numbers to prevent our city from investing in the future.
  12. Ehlinger has 684 yards and 10 TDs in the last two weeks. 76 points scored in two losses. And some of y'all dipshits think the QB is the ptoblem?!?
  13. Ehlinger accounted for 399 yards and 6 TDs. The good guys scored 45 points. Sam has his flaws, but to lay this loss on his feet is fucking stupid. He is our best QB in over a decade by a wide margin, and it's a damn shame that we do not have the coaching and players surrounding him to take advantage of finally having a good QB again.
  14. Y'all thought Terminator was fiction. We have 9 years....

  16. Aren't we all?!?!?
  17. So I just saw 99° on the weather forecast for this upcoming Sunday. In mid October. What in the fuck?!?
  18. And I wonder how much shutting down schools, offices, bars, etc. while everyone is still going to HEB, Walmart, Home Depot, eating out, etc. with bandanas on their faces has really slowed transmission. I suppose we will never know, but at this point I have my doubts.
  19. Yes, as that means roughly 1 person dies out of every 750 whom have contracted Covid-19. That seems.... not very bad. I am aware death rate is not the only factor to examine, but it may be time to realize we may have overreacted just a bit. We are nearly a year into this pandemic now, and it seems clear to me this is not anything near as terrible as the Spanish Flu, nor the Black Death. Maybe it really is just a new, slightly worse strain of the common cold?
  20. No doubt $500/month is on the low end, and you can easily spend twice that amount. But even $500 is a lot of money for someone living paycheck to paycheck who's struggling to pay rent, utilities, and keep food on the table.
  21. Drone footage of the progress at Giga Texas.
  22. Funny you consider it clueless and elitist considering I lived myself without a car for an extended period of time in my adult life, and the fact I was too poor was the primary reason. Spending $500 a month or more for car payments, insurance, maintenance, etc. is not something a "poor" person can afford. Or alternatively driving around in 15 or 20 year old cars that can't pass inspection, or will inevitably strand you when it breaks down is not a recipe for success. Or one can choose to forsake owning a car, choose a location to live served well by mass transit, and which has stores and services that are nearby so you can actually walk somewhere. These places already exist in most cities of any size, including Austin. Are there enough of them for everyone? Nope. Are they too expensive typically? Yep. Should anyone be forced to live such a lifestyle? Hell no. But hopefully the changes to our land use and urban planning which give people a choice will continue and even accelerate over the coming decades.
  23. In truth, the "poors" shouldn't own an automobile anyways. I don't mean that in an insulting way either. It's just cars are expensive to buy and maintain. That money could be better spent on housing costs, or food, or savings. I understand though, given the way we have built our cities, with such segregation of uses and spread out over vast areas. Hopefully with better zoning and land use, along with public transport more people will at least have the option of living without a car, regardless of income.
