  1. Some context
  2. Things are moving very quickly
  3. Rybar reports that the Russians have dismissed Lieutenant General Sergey Kisel, the commander of Russia's troop grouping in Syria. Earlier, former Eastern Military District commander Colonel General Alexander Chaiko, implicated in the mass killings in Bucha, was sent to assist him. In effect, this acknowledges a significant blow to Russia's global interests, to which it is unable to respond for well-known reasons—highlighting its weak negotiating position.
  4. A fairly brief retrospective by Phillips O'Brien on the US's handling of the war, with particular shade being thrown at Sullivan. If an argument is going to convince the new administration to take a more pro Ukraine stance, I think it's one like this that frames it in terms of strength and weakness. https://archive.is/qtvRb
  5. Four Seasons is known to host all manner of characters
  6. Pretty good explanation from the WSJ. https://archive.is/H6oWh Russia’s War Economy Shows New Cracks After the Ruble Plunges
  7. Aleppo celebrates the liberation of the city from Assad's army. Aleppo is the second largest city in Syria. It is said that it was literally surrendered without a fight. Russian troops fled and were captured. Russia cannot send aid to the terrorist regime because it is stuck in Ukraine. Iran and its allies lost commanders in the war against Israel and their troops also fled.
  8. Official statements have now arrived. They report that "Ukrainian forces are carrying out widespread attacks on the Rostov region. So far, 30 UAVs have been destroyed and disrupted by electronic warfare systems." It appears the oil refinery effectively fulfilled its role as air defense.
  9. I almost posted a similar point. At the peak today, the Ruble lost over 9% to the Yuan compared to 7% for the dollar.
  10. Russian sources report that during todays “Pro-Turkish forces attack on Assad’s army in Syria near the province of Aleppo.” a group of Russian special forces was destroyed. Here's what Russian military sources say: “This morning in the Syrian province of Aleppo, in its northwestern part, the Idlib militants began their offensive. The cowardly creatures called "Sadiks" performed their favorite maneuver and began to flee not only on foot, but even on tanks. Once again, thus setting up ours. Unfortunately, there is a sad outcome for one of the Russian units. Photos and videos are already being published online. The events are reminiscent of February 2020, when the fleeing Syrians also set up four FSB Special Operations Center employees, who unfortunately died in battle.”
  11. "Okay, a 7% drop in value is enough for today"
  12. Helpful analysis from Bloomberg, but again the numbers are way off because it was written... earlier today. https://archive.is/sYQ11 ... It might hit 119 later today. Last month (https://archive.is/7HK3H) Bloomberg reported the Russians expected 96.5 in 2025... But "100 isn't so scary"
  13. Came here to post this but it keeps getting worse by the minute. Remember, it just crossed over 100 a week ago and that was a big deal. We might be in full collapse.
  14. A Russian helicopter crashed
  15. More to read on this: https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/11/26/ruble-tumbles-to-lowest-point-since-march-2022-a87138 Ruble Tumbles to Lowest Point Since March 2022
  16. Not really sure why, but it's up 80% over the last month
  17. A positive sign A top Senate ally of Donald Trump Mike Rounds poured cold water over the idea of negotiating a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, saying the Kremlin couldn’t be trusted and would see any peace proposals as a sign of Western weakness. ❗️"As much as I would like to believe we can negotiate with a tyrant, I suspect we may be deceiving ourselves. Do you believe that this tyrant, if you offer him a part of a free country, do you think he’s gonna stop? I wish I could say there’s an easy way out, there’s not." Another quote from the article: The impassioned comments from Rounds, which he stressed were not the position of the incoming Trump administration, still represent a starkly differing view in the Republican party from Trump’s vows to broker a peace deal with Russia within days of assuming the presidency. They also reflect a pro-Ukraine view that is widely-held in the Senate Republican caucus even if other camps in the MAGA world are pushing Trump to cut U.S. military aid to Ukraine when he takes office in January. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/11/22/trump-ally-dismisses-talk-of-ukraine-peace-deal-00191366
  18. Just a reminder and refresher as these events will inevitably come back up in discussions of peace
  19. In Rostov-on-Don, the hospital is overwhelmed with wounded soldiers, forcing many to lie in the corridors, with some even on the floor. Soldiers are frustrated, complaining that instead of constructing an additional hospital, local officials are preoccupied with preparing New Year decorations.
