  1. Started off strong, lost the appeal after a bit, but the TV hit got a chuckle again.
  2. I agree with this, the hammer is denser at the point of impact to allow for the greater transfer of energy. I'm not saying wind resistance is the only factor, it's just one factor (however small) that would result in a lower velocity. A 5 pound hammer will travel at a greater velocity than a 5 pound snow shovel, causing more force, but I agree that the greater factor in this is the dimensions of the hammer to allow for a more concentrated transfer of energy..
  3. The force between the two cars is equal, but you're bringing a different variable to the equation. The bumpers help absorb the force. It would be like setting up a test where you hit someone with a hammer and then hit him again while he has a helmet on and you ask me which caused more damage. That's not the argument at all. The comment was that a hammer weighing the same as a helmet would cause the same damage assuming that the same person is swinging both, which is false. The two objects can't have the same velocity if swung by the same person for a variety of reasons, one of which is wind resistance. With any reduction in velocity you get a smaller amount of force. It goes behind that though. A hammer is more dense at the point of impact to allow for a greater transfer of energy. The force from the side of a helmet displaces the energy over a greater area, which results in a less damaging injury.
  4. Tell me how the tensile strength of bamboo factors into the force it can apply to an object? Bamboo is an incredibly strong material, there's no doubt, but given a stalk of bamboo at equal length to a steel pipe....which is going to apply a greater force given the same velocity? The steel applies more force because of it's mass. You could argue that the greater mass of the steel could result in a slower velocity, but honestly this whole bamboo argument is pointless. How does a bullet relate to Garrett's dumb ass swinging a helmet? Is he going to swing the helmet at the same velocity of a bullet? Does a bullet have the same wind resistance as a helmet? Does the bullet have the same mass as the helmet, and even if it did is that mass less dense than the helmet? I've never said that a small object can't have force, in fact I've said the opposite. A hammer may way the same as a helmet, but it has smaller dimensions and can cause greater damage for a variety of reasons. If the velocity is very high of course a small object can cause a lot of damage. What if you slow a bullet down to the speed of a helmet swing? You probably aren't even reaching the second layer of the epidermis.
  5. It looks to be that way (edge of the helmet vs. the side), but the dispute was a hammer vs. a helmet. The hammer will still do more damage, even if the mass is the same because there's less wind resistance which leads to greater velocity (among other factors). I'll not dispute that the edge of a helmet could cause more damage than the side of it, you and I are in agreement.
  6. Force = mass x acceleration, not stiffness. The force can be more damaging depending on the object though and how that force is applied/concentrated into a small area. Get a gelatin ballistics head, hit it with a hammer, then hit it with the side of a helmet and tell me which does more damage. Even if the same person is swinging both items with the same strength you're going to have more damage from the hammer for a variety of reasons. For one the molecules/mass in the hammer is packed in more densely which results in less air resistance and greater velocity. Another reason would be that the force of the hammer is being focused to a small point to maximize it's energy transfer, while a helmet is broader and the force is spread out more evenly. Think of it as a slap vs. a punch. The hand's mass doesn't change, but the velocity changes because of wind resistance of the open palm and arm vs. a punch coming like a tightly packed cylinder straight ahead. You wind up with more force from the punch.
  7. If Garrett connects with Rudolph's head while swinging a hammer with a solid, steel head he's going to get a major contusion and some serious damage. Instead he's hit with a hard plastic helmet and he's throwing his hands up in disbelief instead of being knocked out on the ground. The two aren't comparable. While I haven't taken a hit from a hammer, the steel rod at the end of a dumpster would be pretty close and I've experienced that. I've experienced the helmet hit too, and the result isn't remotely the same.
  8. I'm glad you didn't miss that softball I tossed up for some levity, especially since two other posters already swung at it. Bless your heart.
  9. He didn't take a hit with the crown of the helmet though, he was hit with the side of the helmet, the part of the helmet with the most give. I haven't taken a hit from Miles Garrett, but I have taken a hit with a helmet. Hurt like hell, but it wasn't anything like taking a shot to the forehead from the end of a dumpster. The helmet left a small bruise, the dumpster created a giant goose egg that left me concussed and sipping broth for a few days afterwards. Again, Rudolph was not doubled over in pain after the shot, he was throwing his hands up in disbelief. I agree, the injury doesn't take away from Garrett's guiltiness, and I think he shouldn't be back on a field until 2020 at the earliest, I'm just arguing that a lot of people are throwing around death as a strong possibility when it's more likely a freak chance with one hit. The Haynesworth cleat stomp was more dangerous, and yet he too should have been suspended more games.
  10. A helmet is hard, for sure, but the plastic shell is thin and has some give to it. More so on the sides and definitely less so on the crown, but it was the side or edge of the helmet that hit Rudolph and not the top of it. Science says power = mass x velocity. Garrett can certainly generate a lot of velocity with the helmet, but there's far more mass with velocity behind a player coming full speed with a helmet to helmet hit. He's putting his whole body into it, and there can be no give with the helmet while the head is inside. Garrett can certainly hurt a man with a helmet, of that there can be no doubt, especially if he had used the top of it. I'm still advocating he miss the entire season as well as games next season, which would be more than what Haynesworth got for cleats to the unprotected head of Guronde. I just think it's unlikely that death would have resulted from one swing, especially given Rudolph's reaction to it and the fact I've taken a swing like that.
  11. Hey, I probably have some brain damage, that's a given. You guys are the ones arguing with someone who has first hand experience though 😏
  12. I've been hit with a swinging helmet before. I've also been pushed head first into the end of a dumpster while playing flag football: Lets say I've got some experience with head injuries and I'll take the swinging helmet.
  13. A football helmet is a thin, plastic shell with foam inside. It's hard, and yeah it hurts, but it's fairly unlikely you kill a man just swinging it once. Can it happen? Maybe, but it's unlikely. Again, Rudolph's first reaction is to throw his hands up in disbelief, not hold his head in pain. If you haven't been hit with a helmet before you're just speculating. The reason helmet to helmet hits are so dangerous has less to do with the composition of the helmet itself and more to do with the mass and velocity behind it. Take a helmet to helmet shot with someone coming at you full speed in a football situation, then take an unprotected shot with someone swinging a helmet. Both hurt, but one is going to be more damaging than the other. There's far more mass and decent velocity behind the normal helmet to helmet hit.
  14. Have you watched the video? After he's brought down and the play is done he instigates contact with Garrett by pulling on his helmet, and then as Garrett is pulled away he literally charges him. If he walks away, he doesn't get hit in the head and nobody is talking about the scuffle today. Not condoning what Garrett did, but Rudolph isn't blameless here. Consider this: you're playing football in the NFL, you just got into a heated fight with another player. A lineman picks you up off the ground and starts dragging you away, while the guy you had been fighting with gets up and starts shoving you and asking for more. You can't tussle with him again as you're getting pushed away by the lineman, so you swing the helmet to get him to back off. Again, not condoning it, but in the heat of moment and you've got someone coming at you I think a lot of people would react similarly.
  15. Have you ever been hit with a football helmet? It's not like a club, it's hallow and has some give to it. I'm not saying it doesn't hurt, but it's unlikely you kill a man with one blow. Like anything else you can probably kill a man with one using repeated blows, but that's not what occurred. Notice that Rudolph's first response to the hit isn't to hold his head in pain, he throws his arms up in disbelief. Could this go to court? Sure, Haynesworth could have gone to court if Guronde had decided to press charges. I think it would be hard to say the hit could have killed him though.
  16. Myles hit occurred while the play was still active, Rudolph's retaliation was after the whistle. He could have left it there, but he charged Garrett while Garrett was being pulled away. Garrett then swung the helmet in defense with his free arm, if Rudolph doesn't charge him the hit never occurs. Garrett deserves to be shut down for the season and more, but Rudolph should have gotten at least one game suspension for his part in it.
  17. I agree, Rudolph should have gotten at least a game suspension. QBs get hit after the ball is thrown all the time, a defender coming at you full speed isn't always going to be able to stop in time. There was no need for Rudolph to retaliate which really started the fight, and he certainly wasn't the victim when he charged Garrett as Garrett was being drug away by the Steeler's OL. If he just walks away he doesn't get hit with his own helmet. Should have been a suspension. As far as Pouncey, I thought he'd get 2 games, but he definitely deserved a few too. I get that you have to protect your QB, but you don't need to punch and kick a guy in the head while he's being held down. Haynesworth got 6 games for stepping on a defenseless, helmetless player with his cleats, which resulted in 30 stitches. On paper Garrett's attack is comparable or less egregious, but to be fair I thought Haynesworth deserved a longer suspension at the time. I think Garrett should get shut down for the season and miss a few games in 2020.
  18. Garrett can eat a dick, but Rudolph is a real bitch here. Not only did he start the whole scuffle, but he charged Garrett while Garrett was being drug away by the Steeler's OL. If he doesn't charge him, he doesn't get hit in the head with his own helmet. Dont' start shit, won't be shit.
  19. I wouldn't say Pouncey was restrained. Sure, come to your QBs defense, but he was throwing punches and kicks to Garrett's head while he's down. In the post game Pouncey even said he blacked out, doesn't remember the scuffle. That's not restrained. I'd suspend Garrett for the season, and Pouncey should get a few games too.
  20. It's just a shit load of toys. I got after her last year because she spent way too much on the kids. She promised me this year she would pull back, but she obviously hasn't. There was so much crap last year she was storing toys in her sister's garage.
  21. I'm taking the kids out for dinner. Wife works late as a nurse and gets home as we're getting ready to leave. We got hit by a bunch of snow yesterday evening, which prompts me to go get the ice scraper out of her van's trunk. Before I can even get there she says "I don't think it's in there, I think I took it out when I cleaned the car." For starters, we live in the Midwest, there's no reason an ice scraper shouldn't just stay in the car at all times. Second, I've never seen her clean out the trunk of the van in her life, she lives to fill it up with crap her mother gifts her on a regular basis. Still, I'm pretty certain there's an ice scraper in her car because the last time I cleaned out her trunk I saw it in there, that was another story. Rather than get the scraper out of my car like she suggested and leaving myself stranded later, I tell her I'm going to look for hers. I start walking back to the trunk and she beats me there. I insist she let me dig through the garbage and she get back in the van and stay warm. She's nearly fallen on her ass once in the snow and ice already, clumsy doesn't begin to describe her. She doesn't listen. She opens the trunk and starts rooting around bags of toys she's been stashing back there for the kid's Christmas. I ask once more to let me look for the scraper as I can already picture it in my mind at the very bottom of the very full trunk. She's not listening, and she's making it clear she doesn't want my help or she doesn't want me to see what's back there. About this time as she's been moving boxes and bags out of the trunk she clips her head into the edge of the trunk door. Wailing ensues with tears, the whole shebang. I'm trying hard not to laugh as I ask "Are you bleeding?" She says she can't tell with the snow falling on her head and what not, because cold snow looks and feels the same as warm, red blood. I eventually convince her to get back in the van and I go ahead and grab my ice scraper because now she's bitching that it's getting late and the kids need to eat. All through dinner she's complaining about the pain and wonders if she has a concussion. "Maybe I should stay up all night just in case?" I had offered to pickup food and bring it back to her so she could take some pain killers and relax. When we finally get home I help get the kids inside, then head back to the trunk so I can figure out if I need to run to the store for a second ice scraper or not. Sure enough as expected, at the very bottom of the trunk under the enormous piles of boxes and bags, is the ice scraper.
