A dude on a firearms forum posted his fishing story today…..
Recently got back from a two-week vacation with the family in Playa del Carmen. The first five days we dealt with Alberto and a crap ton of rain, once that cleared out the weather was gorgeous, although a little hot. Had a great time, including a day on the water fishing.
The only big thing we caught was an 8' nurse shark my 16 yr old son reeled in.
We let the shark go, but caught a barracuda, a bunch of smaller bonito, snapper, and a couple of grouper that tasted amazing!
Now, for the near catastrophic ending to the trip and potentially, me...
One of the deck hands took a bunch of photos and videos with his phone during the trip, also turned out that they knew the deckhand who helped me catch a sailfish in Cabo in May. Heading back to the dock, I went up on the fly bridge to start sharing photos back and forth. Leaning up against the back rail, looking at my phone and not paying attention, we went under a low bridge.
The concrete I-beam hit me square in the chest, knocked me backwards over the rail, which caused me to do two full somersaults, one onto my back on the top deck, and then another onto the bottom deck. By the grace of God, I did not hit my head, the fighting chair, or a movable set of steps on the lower deck, or the boat rail. I managed to land in the only clear space on the lower deck and had less than 3-4" on either side of me. I was also not expecting it, so did not have time to tense up, otherwise I am sure I would have broken something. As it was, I got out of the incident with a nasty bruise on my right shoulder blade, right forearm, and right bicep. I still don't know how I got so lucky, other than as mentioned... the grace of God. Being almost 49, I was sore as hell the next day though!!
